I had the pleasure of spending a month at Cafe Tissardmine, on a creative retreat. Karen and Yousef have created a truly special place, where you can find peace, tranquility and creative awakening, all in one.

The accommodation is lovely. Rooms are well-appointed and so are the fabulous Berber tents, where I stayed comfortably during my visit.  There are even beds on the roof of the riad, where guests can sleep under a display of a million stars.

Cafe Tissardmine supports employment of local people and they produced wonderful food during my time there.  All locally sourced and made with loving care.

If it's the Hilton you're looking for, you're not going to get it (thankfully!), but what has been created there is truly special.  Karen even encourages local children and families to develop their handicraft skills and develop their own little marketplace for people who stay at Tissardmine. This shows a true commitment to the local community and it is clear that Karen holds this village and its people close to her heart. She is a special person, doing special things in this special place. 

I loved my time there and would return tomorrow if I could. I strongly recommend this place, as a true, loving insight into Berber life and desert living.  Thank you!

A wonderful and special space in the desert, where creativity is encouraged to flourish

Lovely location that is true but there were many problematic comments and situations from the English owner. I wish it had been different. The Berber people who work there are kind and generous but the owner cares only about over charging you for water and other basics. Even if you are sick to your stomach and need it. My advice? Go to the riads in the next village. It's closer to the gorgeous dunes anyway. Too bad but sometimes people disappoint. 

Much to Improve

Basic adobe structures and Berber tents in the vastness of the desert beside a tiny village with no other buildings in sight.  Berber carpets, alcoves and courtyards, and a rooftop to view the sunrise, sunset, night sky. Nutritious, varied Moroccan food prepared daily. English spoken, along with perhaps five additional languages. Calm, friendly, nonintrusive staff. Extensive library. Simple, clean rooms.  A haven for writers, artists, contemplatives, anyone who longs for space and silence. 

Silence, Simplicity,Beauty in the Desert

I stayed with my group at Cafe Tissardmine in early March. Before arriving we were on a fairly regimented schedule, but once there our schedule sort of melted away and we entered organic time--days were defined by art, music, meals, and meanders into the desert. It's not right up against the dunes, but you can see the dunes from the place. I enjoyed picking around in the surrounding fossil beds. Sunset was always divine. The owner Karen is strong, kind and very interesting. She takes exqusite care of her guests--I will never forget her!

A place to settle in for a while! Great owner, too!

This is a heavenly oasis: a place to be calm and breathe in the beauty of the desert with gracious hosts. The accommodations are classic and very comfortable (and surprisingly modern), ranging between permanent tent structures to beautiful cob/adobe structures. Lovely lounge areas to have tea and look out to the setting sun on the dunes. The staff are incredibly generous and warm; making one feel right at home. I was very sad to leave after our five day stay. One night they built a fire and played local drumming music and songs as we star gazed and another night arranged for us to do an over night camel trek deeper into the Sahara. Overall, it's an art sanctuary where people go to do a range of residency to deepen any art project they may be working on.  But they host all degrees of travelers, short or long stays. I would definitely go back here and recommend it completely!
