I spent 5 nights at the Shelter Jordan hostel and was very happy with my experience. I was in a 18-person male dorm, which due to covid was underbooked--we had about 5 or 6 people in there. It's definitely a hostel for people who want a quiet and relaxed experience, which was what I was looking for--not a party hostel. The staff were excellent and really friendly. The bathrooms were always very clean--big plus. We rented bikes from the hostel for half a day to explore Amsterdam North. We also enjoyed the free, hot breakfasts every day. If you're looking for a quiet and friendly base from which to explore this beautiful city, I highly recommend Shelter Jordan.

Very hospitable staff and a great experience

I stayed only one night at the Hostel.

It is a bit old, but really clean and the breakfast is really great. There are many volunteers working there, super friendly! 
The Hostel is very close to the centre


Lovely experience!

This was my first time staying in a hostel, and it was a wonderful experience. I am not into drinking or drugs, so I wanted a chill hostel. That is exactly what Shelter Jordan is. They have a nice common area with a coffee shop vibe that is open until 1 AM every night. The bathrooms were very clean. Also, there are options for female only rooms and bathrooms. The free breakfast was great, and the staff was very friendly. Definitely not luxurious, but perfect for a solo trip!

First Time Solo Traveler!

This hostel was perfect. As a group of five girls, we were in a 18 person dorm which was super reasonably priced and so quiet for peak season. The room was respectful and everyone kept to themselves with quiet hours respected which was much appreciated! The rooms were clean and well equipped with each bed having its own space - just remember to bring a large padlock for the lockers as a few of our were too small to work them. 

Staff were AMAZING. So helpful with recommendations and super kind, welcoming and lovely to chat to over dinner. The additional extras offered as part of the price are honestly next to none compared with other hostels for the same price! We enjoyed breakfast every day, a 3 course meal, walking tour and constant advice all for free! Would 100% recommend if you need a cheap place to stay but don't want to compromise on location or facilities.

The price doesn't do it justice!

Good location 15 minutes away from the main square and around 25 minutes walking from the central station.
Staff been super nice and they're all volunteer.
Bed are a bit close to each other but mainly separated with a barrier, it was clean even tho the floor was a bit dusty. 
Bathroom were clean as well.
Breakfast was included and served by the staff; I could choose among bread, butter and jam or ham and cheese, cereals with yogurt or milk and a fruit, or have an hot breakfast as pancakes, French toast or bread and eggs. The breakfast changed daily.
There were also other activities as walking tour or Dutch dinner, which was more like a tasting experience; anyway good occasion to meet people.
Wi-Fi connection was not the strong.
For the price I paid, location and staff I definitely recommend it.

Good spot not far from the centre

Compared to other hostels, Shelter is like a library. You won’t really make friends with other travelers, as people keep to themselves and don’t hang out in the common areas. But you also won’t be kept up at night by drunk/high 19-year-olds coming to Amsterdam to party. If you want to have somewhere tranquil to crash this is the perfect spot. It’s in a really lovely neighborhood close to the center but residential and serene. The staff are super welcoming and everything is clean. The Christian stuff is pretty minimal - if it’s what you’re looking for you’ll find it, if not you won’t feel pressured. 

For those who love sleeping 

On this trip I stayed at 5 different hostels 
And this one has the most spacious shower toilet area.
They have everything you need for a budget minded stay in Amsterdam, included free hot breakfast, towels, hair dryer, separate dorms for girls and boys, free scheduled group activities, and 6 euro home cooked dinner if you sign up before 1pm, friendly and helpful staff available 24 hours 
This was the best value out of the 5 different ones, I will stay here again

Clean, quiet, spacious, safe, cheap

I stayed for 2 nights at this hostel in a 4 bed women's dorm. The place was spotlessly clean, showers were hot, beds comfortable and staff friendly and helpful. The communal spaces were inclusive and relaxed, and the free breakfast was a nice touch. Muesli, yoghurt and fruit was the way to go!

I'm not a Christian, but apart from being given info about their bible study group (good to know when not to be downstairs!) there was no sense of a religious order. I chose the place as I thought it would be quieter and not a "party hostel", and although one girl came back at 3am one night, I got the calm atmosphere I wanted on the whole.

A well run, clean, cheap and relaxing place to stay.

Best hostel in years

It was definetly cheap, but that was about it. Personnaly I didnt like the rooms. The beds were just regular (not really comfy). We shared a room with 5 other people. They were ok, but they wouldnt speak to us and they would get up as early as 6 in the morning to shower. I know for a lot of peole its not that important, but I recognize Im getting old and that trip style is not for me anymore. If you're young (age or at heart) you might enjoy it better, but I didnt.

You get whay you pay for

I stayed in Shelter Jordan with my friend for two days. We stayed in 8-female bedroom which wasn't big but very comfortable, containing our own sink. The bathrooms were clean and we could choose our breakfast between few options, which is definitely a plus depending on whether you want something sweet or savoury. The staff was really friendly and helpful. They also let us put our luggage in a storage room before check-in and after check-out so we wouldn't have to stroll around town all day carrying it.
If you want to stay there just remember that the place is quite calm and silent with quite perceptible but not intrusive religious atmosphere. If you want to party in your hostel, you probably should pick another one.
