Spent a weekend here with my mother. The beds were very comfortable, the staff was very friendly, the Wi-Fi connection is great and the breakfast is fresh and very delicious! In short, a fantastic hotel to stay at.

Great hotel!

If you're looking for a luxurious 5 star hotel in Den Helder you'll be absolutely out of luck - because there isn't one - well, not that we could find in any case. But the next best thing is staying in this charming little hotel-cum-BandB. It's around a 10-15 minute walk from the train station and very close to the ferry to Texel. The rooms are clean and tidy and represent great value for money. The owners are very friendly, helpful, and provide a really lovely breakfast. It's very close to the town centre where you'll find plenty of bars and restaurants. We would definitely stay there again. 

Quick tip: If you need bike hire there is a Halfords in the town centre which cost around 8 euros for the day. Ideal for hopping onto the ferry to visit Texel!

Great little bolt hole in a great location

This little hotel is located near the Den Helder marina. There has been a change in management and the hotel has new owners (beginning of 2015). Apparently the entire hotel was renovated - and now has a cosy shabby-chic seaside charm.
The hotel owners are great and during our stay, they did go above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Whenever we were in in the breakfast room / lounge / foyer, they had refreshments ready for us. They even made us a pancake breakfast on our anniversary, but the breakfast was nice and ample on normal days as well!
Some rooms come with an en-suite bathroom, some rooms have a shared bathroom. Either way, all (common and private) rooms are nice and clean and cosy. Our room had a big window towards the street, two single beds, a table and two chairs, and sea shells on the mantelpiece.
We didn't mind, but the TV was a little small and the coffee making facilities are on the second floor. Other than that, everything was lovely!
Please not: The steps to the first and second floor are a little steep and there is no elevator.

Quaint hotel with great service

For the 70 Euros I paid for one night, the establishment should NOT have had the bar music below nearly as loud as it was, until past 2 AM.  Before dawn there was a loud unknown tapping noise from the other side of my bedroom wall, emanating from the hall shower.  This is how I discovered that the bedroom door did not lock from the inside.  I never got back to sleep, and soon the trucks going by on the road outside my windows added to the delightful morning.  The two beds in the room were too narrow, with insufficient (polyester petroleum) bedding.
Other than all this the barmaid/receptionist was pleasant, and the location of the Cape Horn is good.

Quiet and security needed

This is the sort of place run for its owner who clearly has the attitude that since guests will unlikely stay more than once he can be as unpleasantly selfish as he likes.The first thing to note is that guests are treated as infants: the place is locked up at 10 and if you're not in by then you can sleep on the street. Also at 10 pm, the lights go off in the one common room. Since bedrooms are minimalist at best (mine had no surface on which to rest a laptop and with the possibility of opening the window only an inch or so it was stuffy also) the quite nice ground floor is necessary for sitting with friends or typing on a laptop, and I was appalled to be told at 10 that I could not go there especially as the friend I was with was tired and wanted to put the light off and go to sleep whereas I wanted to type for a couple of hours.

The final straw though came the next day. I'd left my bag for storage while visiting Texel and came back to collect it before leaving for Amsterdam. I asked for the location of the toilet downstairs and the owner replied "there isn't one, they are only in the guest rooms," essentially telling me he wasn't going to allow me to use the toilet.

Strong advice: keep away from this place!
