What a gem in the heart of Leeuwarden! My wife and I had a fabulous time at De Olde Signorie. Owners Ruthger and Marijn have done a wonderful job of renovating this classic old building into four gorgeous and comfortable rooms. They live on the property so service was great and we enjoyed meeting them and getting advice about Leeuwardern. Also convenient, on-site parking makes it easy to visit. We can't recommend this place more highly and look forward to a return visit. 

Leeuwarden gem!

This place was absolutely magical. We stayed in the room that had been the Mayor’s office, an enormous space with high ceilings, chandeliers, gorgeous old floor tiles at the edges of the carpet, and a tiled fireplace framed by massive woodwork and topped with a large oil portrait of a historic mayor. The paneled walls, doors, and beamed ceiling are all painted a fabulous deep sage green, while the tuxedo sofa, small hassocks, and dining chairs are emerald. The effect is instant sensory immersion - old-new, elegant-simple, imposing-comfortable. The room is split between living and dining areas on one side and a huge king-plus bed on the other. Wow. What a treat. The owners were charming - easy to interact with online and very helpful with safely parking our unusual vehicle in the free, outdoor lot. There is outdoor seating, a hot tub, and a sauna, for use In warmer weather, and there are several options for dinner/drinks nearby - including one in the Michelin Guide - we had an excellent meal at an Italian place. Highly recommended, but note: the breakfast is an extra charge.

Glorious B&B in historic city

We stayed in de olde signorie in summer 2009 shortly after Willie had opened it up.
We felt welcome there from the beginning on. Willie practically read each wish from our lips. She gave us great tips for day trips in the surrounding area.

The breakfast was fine and rich. 

It's a shame we didn't manage coming back by now. 
When we'll come to Leeuwaarden again we'll surely know where to stay. :-)

I spend 4 nights in this wonderful apartment. It was very relaxing, comfortable, inspiring stay in a tasteful environment. 
I love this historical atmosphere where everything harmoniously comes together - baroque, Art Nouveau, Functionalism etc. 
Breakfast was enough for me. There is an opportunity to have coffee and different kinds of tee, adjust temperature in the room as warm as I need. As I prefer working in bed almost until noon, it was perfect place and location for me - close to the station and places I need to visit, almost in the center.

tasteful and calm stay in Leeuwarden

We had a really nice stay. When we arrived we could park at the B&B. Our room was decorated in the historic style of  Friesland. The room was clean, we had a small bathroom, a kitchen part and a private refridgerator which contained part of our breakfast. We had read on the website breakfast would be served in the room. It could have been more variated if you ask me, but it had everything you need for a basic startup of the day. Overall we really loved the old style of this room and we would certainly stay here again when we next visit Leeuwarden.

Nice B&B

I must preface this review by saying that I hate to write a poor review, but the experience at De Olde Signorie was so disappointing that I feel other travellers should be aware of what they are letting themselves in for. De Olde Signorie is more of a glorified hostel than a Bed and Breakfast establishment, and should be viewed as such. Firstly some pluses, which avoided them getting a terrible review. It is a lovely historical building, in the centre of Leeuwarden and literally 5 minutes walk to the shops and restaurants. Leeuwarden has many museums to visit, and I recommend that you do and De Olde Signorie is in walking distance of most of them. It also has a small courtyard/garden where you can park your car off-road, but there are plenty of paid parking spaces close by. These are the only reasons why I have not given it a terrible review. Following, is our experience of De Olde Signorie, which, I'm afraid, may not be pleasant reading. We booked and were confirmed for 3 rooms 3 months ago as a Birthday Present Weekend away for a member of our 6 person group. My husband and I were the first to turn up at around 11.30am to a very dark and closed up De Olde Signorie. After calling the number in the front window, we managed to speak to one of the daughters of the Owner, who informed us that her Mother was at a Dance Class until 4 and would phone us back, but she very kindly allowed us to leave our overnight bags in the hallway. We were soon joined by 2 other members of the group and we went off for a coffee in town whilst waiting for the phone call. This call came about an hour later and went along the lines of who were we and what did we want. After explaining for a second time who we were, and being given all the reservation information;  she promised to call back, which she did after another 30 minutes. The following conversation went along the lines of " I am sorry, I have forgotten to put you in our book, I have overbooked the rooms, but as you are all friends can two couples be put in one room?" When told that we were close friends but not that close, she said she would call us back. I must also point out that my husband and our friends are Dutch so there was no language mis-understanding going on. By this time we were concerned especially as the Birthday Couple had not yet arrived, for whom we had especially booked De Olde Signorie, and we were not sure if we had to find another place to stay. Unsettling at best. We finally got a call at around 2:00pm to say that we could be put up after all and to come to our rooms at 5:00 (which is the check-in time). After a lovely walk round the shops and visiting the Fries Museum - wonderful! - we returned, relieved to De Olde Signorie. This relief unfortunately was soon shattered when we saw our accommodation. The first bedroom,  and the best we saw, was a room of pastiche wood panelling, plus en-suite. The whole room was a mis-match of old and new furniture, none of which gelled and was oddly set up with a breakfast table for 6, a double bed plus what looked like a single bed. The second room, although more in keeping with the house style; was cold, (we couldn't get the gas stove fire to work) the metal 4 poster bed squeaked, creaked and generally looked very unstable. The shower was outside the bedroom and was to be shared with other guests, and the WC was slightly down the marble floor stoned hallway, also to be shared with other guests. Again there was a complete mis-match of furniture, the bedding felt damp, although, to be fair, it was probably due to them being so cold, 2 thin well-used bath towels and there were no hand towels. The third bedroom was an insult. Obviously hurriedly put together, with a put-you up bed, which was, according to our friends who slept here, very comfortable, no washing facilities except for a corner sink, nowhere to hang anything, the wardrobes were filled with clothes, and a table that had seen better days covered with a plastic cloth and a box of cereal sitting on it. By this time the Birthday Couple was due, and as we were only staying one night, we took the rooms. Each room cost 75 euro's cash, which considering the third room was 50 euros too much, and then we were informed that breakfast was to be in the first bedroom - hence the made up table - and all our breakfast food was in the fridge in that room!! By then we were in the "whatever" frame of mind and just took the De Olde Signorie as  the lackadaisical, disorganised, badly run place that it is. I left the next day thinking it was such a shame as the potential is all there waiting for a person with vision, but vowing never to return unless it was under new ownership. Absolutely not to be recommended.

Bitterly Disappointing

We booked a room here with two other rooms for the family as we had a family event in Leeuwarden. The room was like stepping back in time because the building was 15th Century. I don't think this was an "official" bedroom. There was a large tv on the wall but nowhere to sit to watch it but there was a couch on the other side of the room. Old faded photos on the wall with one of a naked baby in Edwardian pose. The curtains - they were blinds that only covered up half the windows and the remainder had frosted glass screens in front of them. So at night we had to hang our clothes in front of the windows to make the room dark and stop people looking in. I say hang because we had our own coat hangers with us which was good because there were just two coat hangers provided hanging from a lamp bracket. IN THE WHOLE ROOM AND THE BATHROOM THERE WAS NOT ONE HOOK TO HANG ANYTHING ON!! The breakfast was laid out for us and was good, with milk etc. from a small fridge as described by other reviewers. I believe that in Holland anything over two rooms is classified as a hotel and has to pay tax etc. and follow all the fire and safety precautions. There were no fire extinguishers, no exit signs and the door lock was a hook latch.
We saw our host on arrival and we were told to leave our cash and keys on the table when we left. No bill - no receipt!! 
No - we will not stay here again!!
