After a long day of biking, we arrived in Makkum. De Waag is ideally situated in the city centre, very nice to visit the town a bit. 
The entrance of the hotel is very empty, but the staff is welcoming (spoke a bit french with us which was nice). 
However, one out of two bedrooms was not ready upon our arrival (around 6 pm) which was curious, and then the owner could not find the keys... 

When we finally got to our rooms, we discovered a small bedroom for me (single bed) with sockets that came out of the wall. 
The windows give out directly on people's terraces, so we cannot really open the windows.

The service is scarce but O.K.
For dinner, we had tomato soup, three fish and some fries. The fish was very good but the ratio of fish/ fry was a bit disproportionate. For dessert, we had ice cream (we could not choose, unfortunately). 
The breakfast was odd too but the coffee was good.

Fine for one night

+ clean room
- breakfast is ok but when you stay more then 1-2 nights you realize its always the same (pr. 2/4 breakfast: ice cold old bread, awful)
- ceiling leaking in room, never asked to change room
- socket near bed outside of the wall - not safe when travelling with small child
- thin walls - hearing guests snoring, poor isolation

Never again.

Nice bar, nice staff, rooms are oke but need an update.store our luggage was not possible. Good location to explore Friesland and there nice villages. Not sure if we will return to this hotel. However we did enjoyed our trip.

Nice Bar

Reception and check in is actually downstairs in the bar/restaurant. Staff was really friendly and welcoming, and the checkin process was smooth.
Be prepared for some climbing when you visit this hotel. The stairs are steep and narrow, and there is no elevator. If you have heavy luggage you may have a problem. Our room was nice and clean but very small, to the point that there was really nowhere except on the bed to open a suitcase. Toilet is separate from the sink and shower, which for a tourist like myself is a little peculiar, but it was very clean. We had a double room, but there was not a double bed but two narrow singles pushed together.
Breakfast was included in our price, and it was very nice. Not a huge selection, but everything you need, like boiled eggs, bread, croissants and different spreads, coffee, tea and yoghurt.
I would recommend this hotel for a short overnight stay, but if you plan to stay longer in Makkum you may want to look for something bigger.

Okay for one night

We stayed here for one night while visiting the Friesland area. The owner was friendly. We did feel rushed if we wanted to dine at their restaurant as the town was quiet and they may close early. We went later than he suggested and they were still open and we had dinner their. Fish and the meal was great. The room we had was very small (less than a foot of space at the end of the bed). We made do, but would not suggest for more than one night.There was free parking at the rear of their building. Their breakfast the next morning was quite extensive and good.

Great location in this small village

We have stayed in Makkum for a night during our bycicle tour arround the Ijsselmeer. The staff was very friendly and helpful. A few "minus" made our stay a bit less than perfect: 
- no elevator in the hotel. You have to carry your bags up and down very narrow stairs - so you'd better pack as less as poss....
- still no big luggage: Rooms are as narrow as a bed is wide. No place to open your luggage - only enough space on the bed...
- you hear people talk in the room next door as if it was in your own room. So all we would suggest is that they would make 1 room out of two. And they would get better reviews....
We would prefer cotton lining on the bed. Theirs was polyester and not really confortable. 
And now the plus: Hotel is situated in the centrum of beautiful Makkum. Right next to it the oldest (they say;-)) bycicle store in Nederlands with a wonderful selection of all you need for your bike. Also great restaurants arround - also their own is to recommend. Everything is reachable in walking distance. 

 Breakfast was not perfect. We miss good cheese in Friesland - a place, where they could serve delicious cheese instead of presliced industrial cheese...

But all in all a place you can stay - it's clean and all right.
WLAN is free, you get a code at the bar - which is also their front desk. But WLAN is very week and you have to dial in every 2 minutes....

Very friendly staff, rooms too small, breakfast OK

After a hard day in the saddle we arrived at the very friendly oasis.  Staff were very accommodating throughout the evening and the breakfast was absolutely perfect, especially the coffee, for yet another long day in the saddle.  The room were more than adequate and the shower was excellent.  All in all would recommend wholeheartedly.
