It's beautiful when you arrives and sees the old fashioned hotel. As other friends already said a few years ago that the hotel needs to be refurbished, we can agree with that. It's nice but old. Also the swimmingpool. We enjoyed the breakfast and dinner. Because I had my 60st Birthday, my wife had told the personel, nothing extra's was done to make it complete. We loved it that we could be here with our dog.

Old fashioned

Nice hotel with spacious and comfortable rooms that need to be refurbished (yellow walls, pink doors, orange curtains). The restaurant lives up to expectations: Very tasteful dishes and excellent service. Beautiful area for walking and cycling.

Nice hotel, fantastic restaurant

This is a small hotel, the main building dating from the 17th century, set in lovely surroundings some 10 minutes from Leeuwarden.  It is thus very quiet and there are opportunities for walking or bicycle rides around the locale - bikes can be hired from the hotel.  Dinner was good and beds comfortable.  Those are the positive things about this place.  They are outweighed by many negatives and I would never stay there again.  Only the rooms in the main house are accessible by lift, and have air conditioning- all those in an annex are more like a Premiere Inn!  You have to lug luggage up two flights of stone stars, they do not have air conditioning and when requested we were told there were no fans. The wash basins lacked plugs,windows were difficult to open and did not close proper, TV was difficult to figure out, the safe could only be used after getting a key from reception and you had to pay for it, even then you could not see to use it. Poor facilities in the bathroom, robes cost €9.95, slippers also cost.  Breakfast was poor. A nice terrace hardly made up for all this.
Food at dinner was good, but service poor.  Indeed whilst all the young ladies working in the hotel were charming, they needed retraining. Great confusion about paying, and I was accused of not paying a bill of €8.95.

A stone in a perfect setting

The hotel brochure says "Wakker worden in een wereld die verdwenen leek" (waking up in a world that seemed disappeared).
For once this is totally true. I had a magnificent stay here and will repeat.
I had booked at a Dutch website for weekends away for a normal room price but got an upgrade to the Margaretha Suite, which I loved as it has no neighbours (a corner room with the silent (but very slow) elevator and then stairs next to it.
It is one of only 3 or 4 rooms with airco and free bathrobes/slippers (otherwise 9,95 euro). It is quite spacious and beautifully furnished, 2 big comfort chairs and super-soft canopy bed. Nice bathroom with bath with handheld shower and separate shower cubicle. Minibar was filled. Normally empty and they fill on request. May be that is why at checkout I was not asked if I had taken anything. Could I have taken all without paying? I was honest and paid quite a bit for 3 drinks.
Swimming pool open 7 till 22.00 H.  A bit cool and not very cosy.
Whirlpool did not work. I was told they could have switched it on on request. The bridal suite has a Jacuzzi in the room.
This hotel is about 400 meters from a very quiet road so very very quiet. Only birdsong as surrounded by forest.  I reached it by bus 51 from Leeuwarden to Dokkum, bus stop Sminiastate, about 3 euro.
The restaurant is marvellous, a great style,and it was full and stillI heard little of the people. Tables far apart and big and most importantly (for me) CLASSICAL MUSIC !! Not easily to be found anymore. 3 courses plus 2 amuses for 39,50 euro. 
Most striking are the large gobelins and chandeliers.
Really top-class French cuisine, Fixed menu but one can add French fries if wanted.
I had 2 wines incl. 6,50 euro for a Spanish desert wine (3 sorts) and signed my bill for all that but strange was that at checkout they had added 2 wines I had not drunk.
Luckily it was taken off the bill.
Personell is nice enough but don't talk much and don't react to my talking to them. I found them stiff and not enthusiastic and
don't smile, which was a let-down, as I find that quite important. 
The receptionist showed me my room but took the stairs herself.
Some simple questions they did not know the answer to.
The TV is quite small and has the 28 standard KPN Digitenne channels, incl. 28 which is the 1st time I saw anywhere in the  world a porno channel for free (a Dutch one, MvHtv). Requires the easy to guess code 1234 the receptionists did not know. I mention it here only for completeness of information, not that I care but some people do. I would have preferred a classical music channel like BravaNL or Mezzo but the Dutch have a bad taste in general.
Breakfast was OK, nothing special and not particularly tasty, for 15 euro.In a 1970's room with bar, with no atmosphere , a total contrast to the beautiful restaurant. They have candlelights to keep the coffee or tea warm on your table. Hard boiled eggs. 
A bit of fruit. 
I still rate this hotel highly for the total quietness and beauty of room and restaurant.
One can rent a bike for 10 euro and they have cycle routes.

Totally quiet in Margaretha Suite. Classical music in restaurant

We arrived on Friday September 26th and left on Monday September 29th 2014. We made use of the Bride suite and the island arrangement. This included two three course dinners and one four course dinner at the hotel.
The Bride suite is spacious and includes a Jacuzzi bath and separate shower. Also two large sinks with a mirror cabinet above it. A big and soft bed and a filled minibar. The mirror cabinet has hinges at the top end but requires manual support to keep it open. (We solved this by putting a plastic tooth wire box between it as temporary solution)
The room has one little round window and a daylight window in the ceiling with some decorative adhesive foil stuck to it. The outside paintwork of the round window had seen better days. The window in the ceiling cannot be covered by a window which implicates that daylight will wake you up.
The total quality of the room is reasonable. A number of floor tiles are loose and due to that some sharp edges have appeared which could be unpleasant or even harmful when walking on bare feet. The overall water pressure in the shower is strongly influenced and fluctuation when other guests take a shower at the same time.
The TV in the room has a separate receiver. Switching of the TV and separate receiver unit cannot be done with the remote control. You will always need to step out of bed to switch the TV on or off manually on the device itself.
In the hotel also has a swimming pool and jacuzzi for the hotel guests. The water in the swimming pool was however very cold so I was in and out very quickly to warm up a little bit again in the jacuzzi. When I looked for any towels I couldn’t find any so I walked back in the bathrobe, dripping water through the hotel and to my room.
To join the evening diner one is expected to report at the diner room between 18:00 and 20:00 hrs. The diner room is really beautiful and kept in original stile and sphere. It’s a really nice room to have a diner. Since we were there three nights we decided to go to the island called Terschelling on Sunday. That day is was very busy with the boats to and from the island which implicated we couldn’t be back at the hotel to get in the restaurant room before 20:30 hrs in the evening for our four course dinner.
As soon as we found out we called from the harbour in Harlingen to the hotel and we were informed this wasn’t usual but in the end of course not a problem (as expected since it would be only 30 minutes later).
However when we arrived in the evening at 20:30 hrs at the Klinze (and we could still see some other guests eating in the restaurant) we were taken to the breakfast room where an improvised little table was setup up for us. Our table was also exactly located on the route other guests take all day and evening to walk from one part from the hotel to the other part. We also noticed that this are (where the bar and part of the hotel chinaware / supply is stored) was very noisy and all the time hotel staff was walking in and out with all sorts of daily activities and preparations for the next day.
This felt really unpleasant and was a serious disappointment. There was no clear reason to us why this was done and it felt like a punishment for arriving 30 minutes late.

This resulted in and average judgement. You would expect to be treated special and not end this way...
