Lovely one night stay. So nice sleeping within the rainforest. We caught a super rainy day and wish we could’ve explored the beautiful property more. The room was nice. We slept listening to the rain come down. The shared lodge felt quiet and still private. Seemed a nice spot to connect with other travelers if you had more time while there. 

Nice stay in Punakaiki 

A wonderful retreat and place to relax while exploring the area. The host was very friendly and accomodating. A communal living room area to chill and meet others was great. Had a quiet night sleep in The Stargazer, it was incredibly peaceful amongst the native New Zealand forest. 
Will be sure to be back for a third visit sometime in the future for sure!

Peaceful and relaxed stay

Our stay in Mamaku cottage was very comfortable and Chris and Marley were very helpful. We enjoyed visiting Pancake Rocks, Trueman Track and the walk along the Porari River.  The local hotel and cafe provide tasty evening meals and breakfast.

Punakaiki Adventures

Te Nikau retreat is a small house hidden in the bush between Greymouth and Franz Joseph. The house is nothing special but perfect for someone wanting to get away from it all at a really good price in an exceptionally amazing setting. Would recommend it!

Te Nikau Retreat at Punakaiki.

Ti Nikau was not quite what i expected. It’s more of a hostel type of place with quaint little places in the bush. We stayed in Mamuku cottage and noone was staying above us so it was nice and quiet. However it is very old and tired and needing some TLC. All the cutlery and crockery are mismatched and the floor felt gritty.  The bed was comfortable. There is wifi if you can get it. Which we couldn’t, unless standing on the drive ( in the rain). It was ok for one night but honestly at $150 a night it was the dearest and worst place of our West Coast trip. 

Overpriced 

When we arrived on the first day the cabin was an absolute oven as it was a sunny day and all the windows and doors were shut apart from the one small window that did not shut at all as it needed repairs. When darkness fell we discovered that 3 light bulbs were blown including the two over the kitchen bench but we were too tired to request repair that night. During the night we were disturbed by mice in the kitchen and we found mouse pooh all over the kitchen including on the cutlery the next morning. We politely requested light bulbs and mouse traps and we were advised by the staff in a defensive fashion that these matters would be attended to while we were out that day. They were not attended to. 

The cabin had beds for 7 but living room seating for 6, one of which was backless and one sofa was the most uncomfortable sofa I have ever sat on. There were many other bad details such as only 4 dessert spoons, taps that were hard to turn off, one tap the handle fell off,  three beds were attached together so if one person moved all 3 beds moved. 

All together this was a really bad experience and it was very embarrassing for me as the local lad hosting family members from the UK.

Highly unsatisfactory

I stayed in the Tui chalet.  The chalet was tired and damp smelling .  The whole chalet needed a good spring clean inside and out, there was mould around the inside of windows. It felt tired and unused.  I enjoyed where it was situated in the bush and close to the walking track. It was peaceful staying there its a shame the state of the room let it down.

Disapointed

Upon arrival, I was upgraded to a single room even though I had booked a 6-bed dorm. The place was fantastic - warm, comfortable, homey. The kitchen and bathroom were clean and tidy, and there was a nice communal area with books, guitar, fireplace, etc. The retreat is in a beautiful location, only a few minutes walk from the beach and right next to the Truman Track.

Massive thank you to Chris for going above and beyond to make my stay extra special. He offered me a bike to get places when I told him that I didn’t have a car, took us to see some glow worms, penguins and some wonderful hidden beach spots. Thanks also to Marley for the doggy cuddles and licks!

Overall a wonderful experience - I’ll be 100% staying again whenever I’m in Punakaiki next!

Beautiful place and unforgettable experience!

Tui room was a chalet in beautiful rain forest.
However we should have guessed when all windows were open on a cold autumn day it was due to a damp issue. Well worse than that - the bed was so damp it couldn"t be slept in.

Bathroom had condensation running down walls with toilet paper too damp to use.

This accommodation was not fit for guests. Let alone the charge of $150!!

When we complained - it took 2 emails, 4 phone calls and too many excuses to get a $70 refund.

The lack of sleep was not worth the $80 cost, aggravation and frustration.

Having had a wonderful South Island trip - Te Nikau Retreat was memorable for exceptionally poor accommodation.

Damp and Disappointing 

This place was absolutely fantastic - a gorgeous place in a dream location.  It had so many wonderful touches like hot water bottles for the colder night and really beautifully set up rooms.  Such a reasonable price for such a stunning place.  Thank you so much!
