Absolutely fabulous stay. Our family loved the quiet location, farm setting and really comfy accommodation. Cooked dinner in after feeding the animals. Got up and walked the track around the farm with the sheep and alpacas. Complimentary eggs were delicious, which came with delicious cereal, milk and bread. A perfect stop between Kaikoura and Nelson. Highly recommended.

We’ve spent the last week down south moving our 19 year old into a new flat and stopping here to wind down was just perfect. Llamas to greet us and a walk around the loop in the evening was delightful. 
Very nice selection of local products; from the delicious artisan bread to their own eggs, refillable eco store cleaning products and what looks like home made jam. I commend you both. It’s really beautifully set up.
We’re looking to retire to a tiny home in a few years and wanted to try out smaller places this trip. Misty River Retreat was ‘just right’ in every sense. Ngā mihi

Sooo beautiful

I feel like this place is confused about what it is. The area where it is is nice and quiet, it's about 10mins out of Blenheim. The accommodation itself has a weird layout with one bedroom having a couch and TV and the other bedroom having the dining table and chairs. Nothing communal except the kitchen which is tiny and most of the bench is taken up with a gigantic sink!
So much for the 'daily breakfast'. We were there a week and received a quarter sized loaf of bread, a tablespoon of butter and 2 bananas. There was cereal in a jar. That was it. For a week.
Asked the host Joanne on day three what the go was regarding breakfast and she said "We're not a hotel", and we pointed out that breakfast was included and her reply was that "it's confusing if you book through booking.com". Still no other breakfast for the rest of the stay. Weird.


Disappointing

Beautiful peaceful spot, not far from town. The unit's fit out to a very high standard and has everything you need for a short stay. The alpaca's are a laugh and it's quite the experience feeding them. Heaps of birdlife about and I love the sustainable goals they're striving for here.
It's a pretty special place, especially walking around the wetland at sunset - would love to return one day.

Lovely retreat from it all

Saw a wonderful sunrise whilst preparing for canoe ride.
 Briefing was ok but tides and win shortened the paddling to hour.
Went by car to see gulls, heron, shags, oyster catchers and terns, at nearby entrance of river. Had good picnic there . Guide knowledgeable .

Our lodge was beautifully decorated and looked out onto a lush private garden through ceiling-high windows. Just a short drive from town, we were able to go out wine-tasting during the day, and come back to quiet scenic walks in the evening, visiting the llamas and sheep. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a serene NZ break.

An idyllic and secluded stay in a beautiful region

It's difficult to describe how special the Driftwood experience is, but we highly recommend this to anyone who wants to spend time in what I would describe as peaceful, contemporary rural life with close proximity to town, and in particular if you're a person who has on your must-do list a close encounter with alpacas. We spent two nights here in a beautifully built and furnished, super clean 2BR unit that was a wonderful reflection of the owners Will and Rose's commitment to provide a welcoming, tranquil and private environment that is also eco-friendly. The windows in one of our bedrooms faced a gate and through a gap in the trees around the gate we were excited to see a couple of alpacas looking at us. Even more thrilling and a real highlight was going on a walk around the property with Rose, and getting to feed and interact directly (no fences!) with these gorgeous animals, all of whom have names and different personalities, and to see the Arapawa sheep who hang out with the alpacas. We must also mention Bonnie, the smartest sheep dog we've ever met, and Bobo, the black pig(let). You don't need to be a child to enjoy these kinds of encounters, in between taking in the sights and tastes of Marlborough (wineries, Blenheim restaurants and shops less than 20 mins away), and Rose's thoughtful advice and great breakfasts. Incredible NZ experience in a peaceful and well-located environment

My favourite accommodation during a 4 week trip around the South Island. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and are rightly proud of the beautiful location they have and large area of wetland habitat guests can explore. The lodge itself was absolutely stunning inside. Decorated to a very high standard and very comfy. Loved the tinted big windows especially waking up to see a nosy cow peering in. The owners go out of their way to make it a memorable stay with welcoming cakes and lots of books, games and information on the local environment and habitats in the lodge. Having had a hectic 2 weeks preceding our stay this was an ideal place to chill, unwind, enjoy some tasty local wines on the veranda and explore the adjoining wetland habitat and it’s flora and fauna. Very relaxing! We didn’t have time to do one of their eco tours (wish we had longer) but suspect they would be great fun and very informative. Even months on I still dream of coming back to stay here and couldn’t recommend highly enough. Thank you Will and Rose

Superb lodge in a tranquil location

We booked this tour thru Tours by Locals instead of booking a tour with the cruise ship. Good idea! Our guide was John Martin and he showed us beautiful places. First stop was Upton Oaks Garden, a private garden shown only by appointment. Sue has a remarkable garden, Home and business there. The grounds were stunning. We did wine tasting and a delicious lunch at another winery. We had a stop at a chocolate factory for tasting. A couple of shopping stops rounded out a perfect day!
