Restaurant was  empty on a wet Sunday lunch but we were pleasantly surprised by the food and exceptional friendly service by Kelly. We had the roast pork and it was delicious with perfectly cooked fresh vegetables and plenty of gravy. The garlic and cheese loaf took a while to arrive but wow it was freshly cooked and crunchy and well received by our table. 
Kelly recommended the sticky date pudding and it did not disappoint. 

Good selection on the menu and we will be back. The refurbishment can’t come soon enough I’m sure but it shouldn’t put people off trying this local while we wait for great changes. Oh and the prices were very reasonable $40 each for three courses.

Lovely Sunday roast lunch

Just stopped the one night, reception was via the bar. Where I was quickly shown to my room. 
 The room was spotless and had everything needed for the stay. Tea and coffee, fridge large on suite with nice big shower.  Bed was very comfortable, and the room was a good size with plenty of storage and table space.
 Given the rooms condition in guessing they have recently been refurbished.

It's been awhile since had a meal here, and we were not disappointed.
Though a little small, the calamari starter was delicious with the bread and dips. Steaks were cooked to perfection as requested and the seafood pizza plentiful. 
Desserts were just enough to top of a great evening out, and our guests from Dunedin suitably impressed.

My husband I stayed st Craythornes on July 13, 14. Our room was very comfortable , with a large shower. Breakfast was excellent  full credit to the chef. Wonderful customer service. Good, handy location. The prices were very affordable.

Enjoyable stay 

In Christchurch shopping with partner and decided to make a repeat visit using Entertainment Book voucher for an early dinner.
Menu seemed slightly more up market than previous visits with prices more up market as well.
Very attentive staff.
We both settled for fish of the day and slightly disappointed with "watery" fish.
Portion sizes justified the cost and ended up taking "doggy bag" home, which proved more than enough for lunch for both of us the following day.
Reheating resulted in a lot of liquid draining out of the fish and strangely enough we enjoyed the  reheated meal better than the original serving.
Will we go back? Yes.

Last minute decision for a meal

Another day out. We ended up at the Craythorne's for lunch. The meal for me was OK. I had seafood chowder, (If they serve seafood chowder, then I sort of rate the restaurants I visit, on the seafood chowder they serve). I was really disappointed in this chowder. There was hardly any fish in this dish, and a lot of sauce. It had a couple of shrimps, about 5 mussels but my biggest disappointment was they used smoked fish. Maybe they use the smoked fish as their signature in the chowder.
My sister bought a Hawaiian Pizza, which would have served 2 people comfortably and she thoroughly enjoyed it and ended up taking 1/2 home for her tea.

Went for dinner and was put on a small table with very bad lighting.i ordered the fish and chip meal and my husband ordered the roast. His was okay but why would you put Yorkshire pudding with pork I am not sure. Mine came out and the man that delivered it nearly had my meal in my lap.nthen they made me the wrong fish meal which had clappers in it which I cannot eat. When the waitress came and asked if our meal was okay I then complained and said that I had the wrong meal. She just said sorry and walked away.
When we went up to pay I told them again about my meal and the manager just said ithe menu was a bit hard to order as there were 3 different fish meals on the menu.
Won't be going back as we were very dissatisfied

anniversary dinner

Great place to go for standard, not too fancy or expensive meal. The staff were lovely, the food was good, the restaurant was clean and warm. I’m a vegan and while there’s very few vegetarian and no actual vegan options they were more than happy to make a cheese free pizza for me that was fantastic!

my coffee arrived with previous users lipstick on the cup, the walls had gouges and missing paint, windowsills and parts of the ceiling showed signs of rot.
food was mediocre, so was the service

In 1541 Francisco d’Orrellana and his fellow conquisadors accidently set off down the Amazon River on a raft and travelled thousands of kilometres to the Atlantic Ocean. On the way, they ran out of food and were forced to eat their leather belts. I thought of old Francisco today as I struggled through my roast beef at Craythorne’s restaurant in Halswell. The beef appeared to have been roasted, then sliced, then dried out. Why would anyone do this to beef? It is incomprehensible. The accompanying vegetables were satisfactory, but there was absolutely no sign of the advertised Yorkshire Pudding. If they planned to treat this in the same way as the beef, perhaps this was a blessing. At no stage was my wife and I offered a drink apart from water. We were not offered a desert or the chance of a cup of tea or coffee.
I had an excellent roast dinner at this establishment a few years ago. Clearly, something has gone wrong. Whatever it is it can continue to go wrong without me. From now on, I will catch another raft.p
