If you are looking for modern then go to the Hilton but this hotel is a 19th century building so it’s dated but it’s clean, warm and comfortable and the staff are great. We visited because we are doing a trip of NZ classic pubs.

Classic NZ Pub

The place is very old and dated and a fresh link of paint wouldn't go a miß.
Room was dirty, toilet still was full of poop, dead flies on bathroom floor, top bunk had rubbish and dead bugs and to top it off fleas in the bed. 
The room had clean towels every day which smelt strongly like cigarette smoke. After 3 days of staying here I'm now covered in flea bites.
We won't be back.

Dirty and flea ridden

Dargaville for the weekend. Certainly not a tourist hotspot and itself a town showing signs of a struggling economy and lack of tourist dollars being injected. We chose to stay at the Northern Wairoa Hotel. Impressive from the outside but once you enter the double doors you sense it's heyday has past. No reception to welcome you. Instead a mesh security frame. No sign of any one. I headed into the bar area. Empty but there was noise from an adjacent bar. There the locals glued to the TV watching with drinks in hand hoping it seemed their numbers would come up.
I introduced myself to the bar lady who in turn called the manager. We followed him, a young man, outside to the reception area. He checked our details and handed over a key. Nobody took us up to our room upstairs. We opened the door and immediately realised this was nothing like the room we had seen on the website. $130 certainly wasn't acceptable for this room. So downstairs and found the manager again. Another key handed over. This time a better room, however tired and dated. Carpet had a smell of years of smoke. Furnishings old. Might have come from the op shop over the road perhaps? Bed comfortable. TV with all the SKY channels. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room but there was a guest kitchen down the passageway. Rubbish left on the kitchen bench hadn't been removed.
Our room had an ensuite. A full bath, green stained from years of dripping taps. A shower over the bath set at a height for children.  We had to kneel to wash our hair and upper torso. The shower wall had mould and rot on the base. Handbasin was cracked and had no plug.
The walls were very thin. We listened to the neighbours in the adjacent room and when they went to sleep the soothing sound of deep snoring pervaded the evening. Music from another room thankfully ended after about an hour. I slept well.

Tired and dated old lady needing some TLC

We stayed on Saturday night.  Bed very comfortable, definitely unique.  We got a room without onsuite so had to go down to toilets and shower.  Staff very helpful.  Food great, I have dietary requirement due to autoimmune disorder they were very accomodating.  

You can definitely see the age in rooms and bathrooms, originally built 1878, but that is part of the charm.  Don’t stay if you only want luxury.  I would say worth the stay for unique charm.

Grand old lady

My husband and I live locally, we had lunch Saturday 17th April, it was our 44th wedding anniversary, I ordered Scotch Fillet medium rare and my husband ordered rolled pork, I very disappointed in my meal, my steak was very rare. I did not want to complain because my husband was enjoying his meal. I asked for a doggy bag to take home for my dog, I will wait for a while before I go back again if I ever do. Grace

We stayed one night in this historic old pub and what a darling she is. Feels very comfy and safe. I’m sure the walls could tell a heap of stories tho. It’s very basic but clean and the bed was comfy. Thoughly enjoyed our stay. One word of warning the walls are very thin😂. 

Old world charm. 

Amazingly surprised at this very old world (well in New Zealand) hotel.
Walked in looking for lunch, super surprised at the beautiful interior, extensive menu, super friendly efficient staff, and of course the food variety excellent .
All 5 of our meals were coked to perfection by the Thai chefs kitchen team. Generous proportions and well priced.
A must if passing through or even wishing to stay the night.


Historic Pub

Wow, excellent meals!!! A huge plateful and delicious . I had the pork belly on Kumara mash and vegetables and my friend had the beef hamburger and with salad and lots of fries. Neither of us could finish our meals. Highly recommend this place for a substantial meal.

Abundance of food, excellent

I was prepared to be disappointed given Pub restaurants are sometimes a let down but I was totally was blown away with their food. Portions were good and the food was of excellent quality. I will definitely come back again with my family.
