Sat in a room and watched a mouse coing in through the skirtings. The place is filthy and should be closed down. Photos taken in the showers by previous residents show the cleaning is not up to standard.

Stay away this place is a dump!! Read other reviews before booking in.

I have travelled extensively and stayed at hostels  throughout Nz and the rest of the world, and have to say this place is the worst by far. 

We checked in and were shown two options for our room. We chose the first option, room number 39. I did find it strange that we hadn’t been assigned a room and didn’t see the receptionist take any note of which room we were assigned. The hostel is incredibly dirty however this room didn’t look as dirty as the rest of the place (although I don’t think the sheets are changed in between guests). 

After we checked in we went out for dinner (way too dirty to cook in the kitchen). We arrived back at around 9:30pm and put the key in the room door to find a complete random guy in there! He jumped out of bed in fright and turns out my partner and I were assigned the same as this poor guy. 

I quickly shut the door and called reception, she explained that as there weren’t any bags in the room when I checked in she thought no one had been assigned the room. This is no way to run a hostel!!! Completely unprofessional not to mention dangerous. 

We were assigned a new room in which I slept in all my clothes and used my spare tshirt as a pillow case. 

This place needs to be shut down

Comically bad DO NOT STAY HERE

When I’m stopping through Dunedin, I enjoy staying at the Stafford St Gables. I think the building is super cool, it’s cheap, and the staff are friendly. If you’re an ultra fancy person it ain’t for you, but I’m sure I’ll pop in again. Cheers!

Really like this place

DON'T STAY HERE. Pay the extra couple of bucks for another hostel or STAY LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE. I'd rather stay in the overgrown yard next door. I can normally forgive crappy facilities if the staff are accommodating, but in this case, I really can't. Cold rooms and cold showers. They take a key deposit, but don't open reception on check out to return it. The receptionist tried to pay me to send a fraudulent email to booking.com and worst off all you have to pay for toilet roll. Sleep in the street, sleep in the park, go and cuddle up with a meth addict - you'll be better off than staying here. New Zealand hospitality would benefit overall if this place was wiped off the map.

Stay LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE

My dad and I came here to stay for a couple of nights. We had some issues with money transferred into our accounts from Australia and they completely understanding. 

They were very accommodating, good facilities, hot showers, clean bathrooms, clean room. Really impressed. 

I would definitely stay here again. Thank you to the staff for your wonderful service.

These are the most UN-KIWI people I have ever met. We’re in Dunedin for the Elton John concert but were let down last min by our Air B&B - due to double booking so had to book somewhere very last min - we went to booking.com to book Stafford Gables - on the booking page it showed 350 cost for 3 people – it  did not mention it was a per person cost - when we pressed book the price jumped up to $1249.00 - we immediately cancelled the booking (with 30 seconds) and they refused to refund the money - We called straight away and went round in person - the still refused to REFUND - eventually after 2hrs of pleading they gave partial refund - but kept over $500 - AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE - THE ARE DISHONEST. ALSO THEY PUT THERE PRICES UP 300% FOR THE EVENT to stay in a hostel dorm - Shocking People - should be ashamed of yourselves - This is not just me - look at the other reviews - SHAMEFUL PEOPLE - They are so bad we've contacted Fair Go so hopefully they should name and shame them shortly - AVOID - AVOID - AVOID

My partner, on a motorbike ride was impacted by bad weather and needed accomodation in Dunedin at short notice. He was wet, cold and just needed a warm bed. The owners cashed in on the lack of accomodation due to the Elton john concert and the road closures that had stranded travellers. He paid $200 for a bed in a six bed dorm (normally $29)They would only accept cash and there was not even a cup of tea or a towel! Shame on you Stafford Gables! 

Dreadful and a rip-off

Hm, totally disagree with the reviews below. Its one of the cheapest hostels in Dunedin, it is very well located in the city, 10 mins walk from the Octagon. The water is hot in the showers, the mattresses are thick and comfy which changes from the usual bed you weak up from with a sore back, the kitchen is as clean as a backpacker kitchen can be, the team is friendly, the hostel is clean. Also, there are terraces surrounding the building from which you can see Dunedin, this is so cool and rare. Laundry expensive and wifi works only on the ground floor, i guess nothing's perfect but its still better than a Base. If you intend to be picky about everything, stay at home OR pay more money, no need to trash on a honest and family hostel which respects its promises : affordable, clean, comfortable, well-located, quiet.

Comfy and affordable in Central Dunedin

Cold water, heater off and each hour, you have to wake up every hour to turn on, smells bad everywhere.
We had problem in our room with the key, key wasn’t open the door and the staff said to go out and come back later but our things were inside the room, in the end we had to call the police until he decide break the door. Nightmare’s hotel could be the name.

Worst hotel

Location was okey and receptionist was very helpful (didn't catch his name tho), but that's unfortunately the only good things about this place.
Private or shared rooms DOES NOT come with heating and large windows. Room was cold as all hostel and if you wanna leave the heater on in your room, don't be so sure that's will happen cause there is a timer for 30 min, so it means if you wanna go out and come back to warm room that's not gonna happen. 
And talking about warm things, probably need to mention that good luck with hot water in shower. We was trying to get at least warm water and after running cold water for about 30 min managed to get it in one shower out of 4, well at least something. 
NO wifi and by saying NO I man it. You can have it only in the kitchen and even receptionist when was telling us password told us that it's not gonna work in the room, oh wel...
