Wow! What a beautiful spot right next to Franz Josef Glacier. The photos of Julie and Jo's don't do it justice, it is splendid. Sitting on the porch with the sun and greenery all around was so lovely and peaceful. A couple chickens said hi too. We enjoyed the handmade soaps and locally made toiletries. Julie and Jo welcomed us to the main house for breakfast and Julie gave us some great hiking tips. Only wish we could've stayed longer.

A cozy retreat next to Franz Josef Glacier

Excellent cottage, well equipped in its own grounds and so quiet. Julie and Jo very welcoming, 
with advice on what to see and where to eat. Breakfast  was brilliant, home made crepes with fruit from the garden lovely.

The place is a perfect place to relax after a busy day of hiking and exploring!  It's private, the bed is comfy and large, the space is generous and comfortably accommodates luggage, food items, etc, while still having room to sit and relax.  Great in-room coffee and tea.  Unfortunately it rained, so we really weren't able to enjoy the wonderful deck and yard, but it was enticing!  Breakfast was tasty and fresh, and the hosts were lovely, and provided!  It was a great place to start our New Zealand tour!

Spacious private and relaxing retreat

Truly look no further, this is the only place I’ll stay in FJ. I’m a solo traveller in my early 30’s and there is nothing like being welcomed into such a warm, inviting, cosy home. Julie & Jon were so flexible with my late arrival & cooked up a gorgeous breakfast, exchanging travel stories and sharing all of their local gems. I couldn’t have asked for warmer company or a more perfect stay. 

I had the best sleep - the bed is just outstanding (and huge!) and to wake up to birdsong was simply perfect!!

I had the top floor of the main house with a private balcony, a great bathroom & mini fridge. The room was so beautifully decorated with so many small touches — the kettle ready to be boiled, tea & coffee, dark chocolate, and a beautiful book of the best things to do in Franz Josef.

Julie and Jonathan greeted us with open arms upon arrival. Their hospitality had started days before, when they proactively contacted us to help us plan our activities while in Franz Josef. We wanted to hike and Julie helped direct us to the best trails that met our abilities and took advantage of the current weather. She personally helped us inside the pristine and comfortable cabin. It is in a peaceful location with views of the mountains. We were served breakfast in their home the next morning and had wonderful conversation with Julie, Jonathan and other guests from Britain. Julie and Jonathan are incredibly friendly and I would highly recommend staying at their lovely bed and breakfast.

Wonderful hosts

We had such a great stay with Julie & Jo. The room was perfect, breakfast was delicious, but most importantly - Julie & Jo are a delight to spend time with. 
They have such great insights into the area and are truly warm hosts. It was tough leaving their spectacular spot in the world, but we gained new friends! 

Perfect and welcoming stay.

Staying with Julie and Jo was wonderful. Being caught in a storm, we got in a little later than we planned, but we were welcomed with a warm greeting and directions to the nearest open restaurant. We stayed in a big one room cottage next to Julie and Jo’s home. The room was so comfortable and clean. It had so much space and even had a small kitchen area and dinette. The bed was very comfortable, and the shower pressure was fantastic. If this road trip stop hadn’t been just one night, we would have liked to stay longer. In the morning we walked next door to Julie and Jo’s kitchen where we were served a delicious breakfast with hot coffee and tea. Definitely recommend Julie’s crepes! After being on a road trip for so long, it was so nice to sit in someone’s home and have a homecooked meal with warm conversation. Julie and Jo even looked at our road trip itinerary and recommended some of the many stops that were definitely worth it and the best places to park for them. Even the views of the mountains on the back porch got us energized and excited for the day. Highly recommend this bed and breakfast and hope to stay there again someday!

The Perfect Road Trip Retreat

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our touring holiday of NZ. From the moment of our first enquiry to the moment we left Julie and Jonathan were most attentive and helpful, ensuring we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. 
Ribbonwood is a few minutes drive outside of Franz Josef, so it's ideal if you want to be away from the bustle of the town.  We stayed in the main house in The Waiho Rooms which are spacious, private and include a large balcony and luxury bathroom.  There are two bedrooms on this floor but if you are travelling as a couple the smaller of the two rooms will be blocked off. 
Everything we needed was provided including some home made cake, fresh milk for our early morning tea, and lots of help in planning our time in Franz Josef and also recommendations for our onward journey.  We felt very comfortable and slept very well here.  Franz Josef is a delightful town too - it was one of our favourite locations of the holiday.
We were particualry grateful for Jonathan's help when we had a flat tyre on our last day.   Thank you both for a lovely couple of days. 


Very attentive Hosts

Our stay at Ribbonwood was more than a clean room and delicious breakfast. Julie and Jonathan are lovely people who go above and beyond to make us feel welcome in their home, which is beautiful. The property sits just a few kilometers from the town of Franz Josef, which lends it a peaceful vibe. My family occupied not only the standalone cottage, but also both rooms on the 2nd floor of the main house. Each was appointed with a tea/coffee service and Julie and Jonathan’s attention for detail was noted everywhere. The huge windows in our bedroom looked out over the lush landscape and gardens, with misty mountains in the background. Our beds and pillows were super comfortable; we slept soundly. Julie and Jonathan provided us with a delicious breakfast- her infamous fruit crepes and homemade bread and rhubarb jam. Most of our breakfast was provided from their land; fruit and veggies from the garden and eggs from the chicken coop. I almost want to keep this place a secret so I am sure to grab a booking the next time we are in the area, but it’s too good not to share.

Spectacular stay!

We arrived to find a chalk board welcoming us and a message to say our host was in the garden, which is exactly where we found Jo. From the get go we felt at home. The cottage was beautifully presented, with everything we could have wished for. 
Breakfast on both mornings was delicious and we enjoyed the company of Jo and Julie. We would highly recommend The Ribbonwood Retreat
