Unique and cozy cabin accommodation with more than you could ever need, and kakapos visiting for happy hour on the deck, to boot!  Owner Kath and her son Bill were helpful and kind and the tiny Suzuki car was a Godsend! I only wish I’d been able to spend more time here—I guess that means I’ll have to return!

Worth every penny—you simply MUST stay at Anchorstone!

Bill and Kath are top draw. Great accommodation, picked us up off the Ferry, hired a car for what is a pittance and gave great advice. Booking was clear concise with no issues. 
I had missed a flight and had to cancel short notice. No penalty, no quibbling about cancellation policy understood that I had no control being in an RTA.
Will definitely visit Stewart Island and stay here again.

Stewart Island Visit: accommodation

What an amazing spot, so natural and at one with the wilderness ,yet with all the luxury and comforts anyone could wish for. We booked out all 3 amazingly cabins for a family excursion to Stewart Island for Easter. We were met off the ferry by Bill and transported to Anchorstone. Bill had arranged our bookings and suggested excursions. His local knowledge made our trip so much fun...we saw kiwis , caught and ate our catch and felt so well looked after. Thank you Bill and Kathy. You are truely amazing

Untouched Paradise- God's zone!

What an amazing spot! Feels like your sitting in the tree tops. Even saw a couple of kiwis and plenty of other native birds around. The bed was super comfortable and room immaculately tidy thanks Willi and Cath! Loved our time

Wow 🤩

It started with a bumpy but super fun plane ride on a windy day...way quicker and more exciting than the boat ride! Picked up by Bill who owns Anchorstone with his mom. Great insights from Bill on the short ride from "downtown" Oban to the property - if he asks whether you want to see some sights before you check in say YES! Property is lovely, and consists of three identical small bach houses. Fully equipped with everything you need and a complete kitchen. Nice touch with mom's Christmas cake which was yummy!  Beds were super comfy, place was extremely clean, and showers and bathroom perfect. Includes your own Suzuki car - each of three were colour coded per house. We had a wonderful stay and will definitely return to Anchorstone on our next Stewart Island trip.

Perfect Spot for a Stewart Island Escape

Anchorstone was the perfect little retreat for us.  The cabins have everything you could need during your stay: comfy beds / pillows, hot water bottles (with quaint homemade covers) a heat pump, portable speaker, tea, coffee + capsules, fresh milk, gingerbread bikkies (nom nom nom), a weber bbq on our balcony, a brand spanking new courtesy car.  We stayed in the middle cabin, great view of Horseshoe Bay, bird song around us galore and we were pleasantly surprised with a daily visit by an inquisitive family of Kākā. If you want to forage for dry wood (or opt to purchase a bag of kindling at the four square) there is an outdoor dining fire area.

Kath was so lovely to deal with (well respected our privacy during our stay too) and she picked / dropped us off for our local flights.

Wouldn't hesitate in staying again...!

Inquisitive Kākā Retreat

Cabins may look rustic but are very comfortable with everything you need. The bed & linen are very good quality. Having the car for $20 per day a worthwhile bonus, as location a little out of town. Loved the daily visits from the Kaka on the deck for his cookies.

Peaceful setting

Stayed at Anchorstone near the end of March for 3 nights and it was stunning. Clean, luxurious rooms with everything you need. Close to town but felt like you were in the bush with amazing wildlife surrounding. The free car was a bonus and really made life so easy and we were able to explore more than we thought we would be able too. Bill and Cath were amazing hosts. We were picked up by Bill from the flight centre in town and he gave us a small tiki tour and told us everything we needed to know before we even got to our rooms. Highly Recommend if you are ever coming to Stewart Island. Thanks again!

Amazing Stay

The cabins are nice and it's a good location although you're dependent on a car, and that's why they're provided. A good king size bed and everything in the kitchenette you are likely to want.  Some nice touches with real coffee and quality biscuits.  Only one easy chair inside and a little awkward  if you want to watch TV.  A good balcony for bird watching etc with seats and a barbecue.  My unit got some noise from the pump shed but not major. However it is very expensive.  I paid NZ$1245 for three nights, which included the car and a token amount for car expenses.  The vehicles are old RAV 4s with 180kms + on the clock.  Including the fee for car expenses I'd give the daily value of the RAV's at maybe $60.  They will like most providers do pick ups and drop offs at the ferry terminal or flight office so there is some value in that.  I'd say that's just part of the service. That leaves around $350 a night for the accommodation which is around 5 Star hotel  prices.  For a one room cabin with en suite although quite nicely done I'd say it's $100 a night too expensive.  Call it $300 with the pick up/drop off and the RAV and I'd say it would be about right.

Car was helpful... Except it conked out every so often and you had to attach a battery charger😁... All part of the Stewart Island experience!!
Great coffee and milk and biscuits provided. Bill was very helpful.
