Our whole experience with The Bay Motel was excellent from the pick up, to drop off for our airport transfer.
The hosts are just wonderful warm people. Only 8 weeks on the island and already informed locals! Helped us book on an informative bus tour, and told us of the eateries to try, while making us feel very welcome. The rooms were clean, fresh and the bed comfortable. Totally recommend. 

Fantastic Stay, Totally Recommend 

Picked up from the ferry by the new owner (who had only taken over with his wife a couple of weeks before). Lovely chap who did a tour of the town (didn’t take long!) to point out where things were, etc.
The apartment was large, comfy bed and good bathroom, and overlooked the bay. Nice and peaceful stay, with good hospitality.

Fabulous stay!

Stayed for two nights. Room is cosy, with 3 heaters (main sleeping area, near the door and in the toilet). Bed also has the heating function. Bed is very comfortable and room is very clean. Will come here again if coming over to the island.

Water pressure is good, and hot water flowed out after abt 5 seconds.

A place to stay, truly!

We only stayed a night but we enjoyed the experience so much that we have booked another stay in Janurary as we want to expeience Rakiura in the summer. We were fortunate to get a room at this tme because it is their peak season . Great to be picked up at theiir airport and dropped off to catch your return flight. We appreciated being able to get ino our room early becuae the room was available - thank you. The view from our room is exceptional - 1 bedroom with spa bath. Thanks also for the local recommendations . Great to stay at the Bay hotel and be with people that are so committed to Rakiura and looking after people so that they are keen to return as we are. 

Great place to stay in Rakiura

Good rooms and position let down by a host that doesn't put customer service at the top of his list .Wouldn't stay there again because of his attitude.I have two friends and met another couple that have stayed here ,they expressed the same feelings as well

Nice spot let down by poor attitude

My wife and I stayed here for 2 enjoyable nights.  Roel, the owner, picked us up at the wharf, and provided us with a very quick and efficient check-in.  We most assuredly will stay at the Bay Motel on our next trip to Stewart Island.

Great View of the Bay and nice accommodations 

Our arrival onto the island was smooth, we never realised nor were advised that a van was sent to pick us up at the wharf. We hired a car and toured the island ourselves. Arriving at check in for approximately 2pm. We were greeted by a man who was abrupt and sarcastic saying we were missing and seemed to be very agitated. HOWEVER THERE WAS NO CONFIRMATION OF CHECK IN TIME NOR COLLECTION FROM WHARF. our room was tidy, and spacious however, the bathroom in particular smelt like vomit. There was only 3 towels for 4 people. He knocked on our door at 09:59am rushing us out. One of our guests were quickly using the bathroom at this time, he proceeded to bang on the bathroom door yelling at them to hurry up. Another guest said he would just be a second and he was huffing and puffing about the next arrival of guests and how unorganised we are etc. We were packed in the car pulling out by 10:02am however, his actions and retaliation made it seem like it was 10pm. This was by far the worst hospitality we have experienced, especially as a first time on the beautiful island. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Awful hospitality

We had booked one night here for our stay in Stewart island. The photos do not do justice to the hotel. The room was really large and comfortable and the kitchen area well equipped , would have been perfect for a longer stay to self cater simply . The veranda overlooking the bay was lovely to sit on and listen to the Tui s . Very clean and welcoming, being picked up at the ferry  was an added bonus. Stewart island is an amazing place to go to and this made for an ideal base.

A great motel in a beautiful island

N.B. I would put 'Good' above for my overall experience rather than average if that option was available. Great spot for closeness to the village and wharf.  Very spacious, clean room; the spaciousness of the room would be the biggest plus.  Not serviced daily (I stayed 3 nights) except for towels (if you wanted more).  View of the bay which (in the stunning weather I had on the island during my stay) was lovely. A Kaka visited in the evenings which was the highlight of the stay for me; gorgeous to see one so close.  I found management to be somewhat perfunctory in their attitude re hospitality and friendliness  throughout and keeping dogs in the laundry where guests may do their laundry is not a good idea; truly rank smell. Having said that I did appreciate that management tried looking for my contact lens which I lost on my last morning there.

View from the balcony was outstanding - just unfortunate that a fellow guest saw fit to tramp past all our rooms to get a photo from the end of the balcony.
We were picked up from, and dropped off to, the flight office.  Toiletries are very nice.  Room was clean and well laid out.
