I was in one of the outside units.   The bed was comfortable but the room was very hot, stuffy and smelly.  Could do with being aired out more regularly in between guests.  Was kept awake by road noise all night as it was close to the main road.  Ended up getting up and leaving at 1am as there didn't seem to be any point in just lying there waiting for the next truck to come along.  Staff were friendly and it's in a good location.

OK if you are a heavy sleeper.

Stayed one night prior to going on Nydia Track walk.  Excellent facilities and welcome.  We arrived late but information and check-in made very easy and straightforward. Great location and facilities. Recommended.

Great place to stopover

Stayed over Xmas period - was a little hesitant to be honest, so upgraded to the apartment. It was totally worth it. The main room was large with high ceilings, lots of light/windows, fantastic view of Havelock, comfortable bed, great shower and bathroom and massive balcony.  Staff were really friendly.

Surprisingly good!

Havelock is a relatively sleepy port town for coastal boat and shipping that is best suited to exploring the rich coastline of the Marlborough sounds. Blue Moon Lodge offers itself as a base for such tours because it is cozy and equipped with many accessories to relax and provide for yourself. In the comfortable and at the same time somewhat unconventional ambience, one can expect to find like-minded among independent and experiential individual travelers.

There was a sign on door to take shoes off before entering. Walked out and got accommodation elsewhere.

Very disappointed

We were in a double room with a shared bathroom. The house is already a little older. The room was relatively small and there was no way to hang something up. The bathroom was clean. The kitchen was well equipped and the living area was also nice. The price-performance ratio is not quite right for us, but we were still happy with our stay.

Quiet hostel

Our stay at the Blue Moon Lodge was fantastic. 
The staff are super friendly and helpful, and the rooms clean and comfortable. 
The communal kitchen and lounge area both have great facilities, amongst a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. 
The WiFi worked and the showers were great. 
Shane also organised some fantastic well organised mountain bike transfers to nearby tracks (Whakamarina and Nydia). 
A very highly recommended place to stay!

A perfect base for mountain biking adventures!

Stayed at Bluemoon over a long weekend for a biking holiday for 3 days. We road White’s bay, Nydia and Wakamarina. Shane ferried is around to all these trails and provided good tips and banter. The accommodation was perfect, good communal cooking areas, good wifi, excellent hot water, excellent atmosphere, clean, comfortable. It’s next to the main road so expect some road noise. Great recommendations for dinner.

Shredding the trails 

We found this accomodation on booking.com and thought that it was exceptional value for money to stay in the studio apartment with double bed, 2 singles, double corner spa bath with its own ensuite, $148 last minute for all this was not to be beaten and were very happy to get this. Nice and close to all amenities and no road noise which people often worry about with being on a main drag, the apartment had it's own balcony with a spectacular view and was very well equipped with everything we needed - including a place to park our car. Beds were nice and comfy and the service was really good (friendly owners). 

So Why only the 3 star rating?. Unfortunately our room was filthy upon arrival so first impressions weren't really favourable at this point. Food gunge and gunk left in the sink, cups that hadn't been cleaned, the state of the bath actually made me cry, it wasn't that clean, and was fairly worn (as this was the one thing I was really holding out for and quite a treat for us I felt a bit ho hum about it) and sitting in the bath looking at the grime between the top of the bath and the bottom of the tiled wall wasn't exactly pleasant , there was old splats of muck on walls and doors, grubby windows, it still needed vacuuming and there was visable mould around the unit particularly near the window frames, worn chattels, unattended wear and tear throughout, rusted metalware in bathroom etc. I was pretty upset about all this to be honest, I just expect that any commercial accomodation is cleaned to a professional sort of standard and especially prior to arrival. The owner was extremely apologetic and tended to some of the issues while we were out which we were greatful for. It wasn't a very warm night, I think the level of bedding on the beds needs to be more (one thin sheet and one thin comforter is all that is provided) it would of been a lot more comfortable with more bedding or atleast to look at providing spare duvets for guests to add to their beds if they need. The other guests drove us nuts with their thumping music that vibrated through the floor and continually woke our kids. Hubby went down for a word and the music was turned down to a level that they could still enjoy and we could still enjoy our bath and movie without the thumping through the room and the crying kids from being woken but within 10 minutes it was turned up louder, a few stomps on the floor and hearing a very annoyed woman from above put a stop to that, it wasn't the owners fault of course but it was marked as "soundproofed" on booking.com so wasn't expecting to be disturbed with loud music just being started at 9.30pm. The t.v WHY? this did make us giggle but it wasn't at a pleasant viewing height. I am sure there will be a reason but it made it near impossible to sit through a movie looking way up the top of the ceiling like it was. Would be good to see security stays on all of the windows to make the stay a bit safer for families with young kids only two of the 6 windows had stays and there was a potential for falling at height. Overall we were 50/50 about our stay. Happy with lots of things but unhappy with others. Would be happy to come again sometime and see if it is any better. It has huge potential!

Family spontanious getaway to Havelock, Staying at Bluemoon Lodge.

I honestly cant believe there aren't more terrible reviews here. Everything else was pretty terrible. I stayed in the 4 bed dorm, and when I walked into the room I could barely see which one was a free bed because there was clothes hanging from the corners of each bunk. In the already small room there was stuff piled up everywhere on the floor and peoples belongings all over any surface. I put some brochures on my bunk and went out to go eat elsewhere. When I came back my brochures had been dumped on the floor and now all 4 beds in the room were clearly taken and covered in peoples stuff. I had to call the phone at reception and someone in the hostel came to sort it out. I then heard the guy speaking to a women in the other room and she yells loudly "Oh I was told yesterday that I can move into that room". Anyway I was super tired and unimpressed with all of this, but eventually my bed was remade and I got a bed again. I sat in the lounge area for awhile doing life admin and the women I had heard earlier and a few others (including the guy who had sorted out the room thing) were all hanging around talking extremely loud, laughing obnoxiously and ignoring anyone else that was not their group. Previously, I had overheard a guy asking to book a room for long term, he seemed like a tradie worker who smelled so strong when I went past, I had to hold my breath. Later when I used the shower, the bathroom smelled horrid. It was apparent from early on that just about everyone I saw in the place that night stayed here long term and worked in town. In my experience, these are often the worst hostels, as the people are not friendly, they treat the place like it's their own slob house and there were clearly no enforced rules in the hostel that other hostels have (such as no noise after 11 and no one made sure the kitchen was clean as the kitchen was a pigsty). That night, the loud people that were complaining about their jobs they had in town, were very loud till late and my earplugs didn't help all that much. Luckily I was there only for 1 night, and I left very early the next day. It really tops my list of worst hostels to date in NZ...and probably anywhere in the world. The whole experience was unfortunately my main memory of Havelock, which itself is a really pretty, cute small town. A final note. I paid way more for a bed at this place then I did at my next hostel in Picton, which was one of the best hostels I stayed in, in NZ.
