All communication was friendly and helpful.
We were going to be arriving late, so we rang to let them know. We received a cheerful response  saying this would be fine.
The unit was very clean and warm. It was fully set up with all utensils and appliances. 
Although it wasn't required it was good to see the unit including the bathroom facilities were accessible to disabled people. 

If we return to the area we would certainly return here and also recommend Bay Cottages. 


Friendly accessible boutique Units

This motel is perfect, it is such a great location and unit was so comfortable.  You are across the road from south bay beach, it is so tranquil here compared to the town centre and it's lovely to walk up to the jetties and up to the headland.   
We had a very friendly welcome and it was a nice touch as part of check in that we were shown around our unit explaining how things worked and where to find things.  The unit was well equipped, comfy bed and a powerful shower.  They also have a wonderfully friendly little cat.  
The only negative was the wifi which kept on cutting out, probably as we were in one of the furthest units from the office and also when all units occupied so everyone using it, but we managed OK using cellular data.    
We had a lovely holiday here and highly recommend it as a place to stay in Kaikoura.

Fantastic holiday

The location was great as a base  for the whale watching trip that we wanted to take - and the view of the mountains and sea from the road outside was beautiful. The town itself is a ten minutes drive into the next bay. 
Reception upon arrival was something of-a transactional process including an explanation of ‘the rules’ and when checking out, a friendly good morning by me to the man who was helping to service the apartments, was acknowledged by no more than a cursory nod - not quite the friendly approach we’d encountered everywhere else on our long trip around the country. 
Anyway, the room was perfectly fine, it was very clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable enough stay and to do our laundry. The room was described as having Netflix and free internet, which I guess it did, but the internet was only strong enough for consistent access in certain parts of the room.

Quiet Location

Lovely setting across the road from a rocky beach. Luckily for us the magnificent pohutukawa tree out the front was in full flower. 
The place is out of the main drag at south bay but you can walk through the forest to the main village or just walk up the hill and back along a different route. 
The hosts Gus and Larisa were delightful and very helpful. 
The room has a kitchenette with hot plates and microwave. 
We were there on New Year’s Eve and it was quiet even then except for the odd pop of fireworks. Lovely!

Comfortable, quiet and spacious

My stay at this motel was just fabulous. I was in Cottage 3 and I looked out onto fields and the mighty Kaikoura snow-covered mountain range. Glorious. All the cottages are detached so you don't get any noises coming through from your neighbours. The cottage has excellent heating and a huge king size bed. Separate bathroom with shower, loo and basin. No traffic noise - quietest place I have ever stayed in and I'll be booking there again when I have a stop over in KK on my way to Picton or ChCh. Six stars from me. 🤗

Bay Cottage Motels

Phoned late in the day as driving from Picton and trying to find a bed for the night. Gus was very helpful and not concerned about my late arrival- despite an All Black test underway! Room was immaculate, bed was very comfy and plenty of niceties like teas, coffee and bathroom sachets. I appreciated the efforts to encourage recycling by guests. Very quiet overnight and a lovely beach outside when I left early in the morning. Would definitely recommend for somewhere a short drive to town that nice and quiet.

Comfortable, clean and friendly hosts

We loved our stay at Bay Cottages.
Beautiful sleepyhead king size bed..had a fabulous nights sleep!
Right across the road from the ocean, we were able to enjoy a beach walk and ocean view late afternoon.

Most awesome bed and fabulous location!

Super clean and cozy with nice "fireplace", bathrobes, wi-fi and Netflix.  Right across from the beach (I could see the ocean from my kitchen window). Friendly owners and good value. I would stay here again.

Great location away from it all!

The check in went easy and fast, the owner and host is Guus, originally a Dutchman but already 40 years living and working in NZ. The location is perfect, a beautiful seaside at 100 meter distance from the cottage. The start of the beautiful Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway is at  only 1 km distance. The town and other activities are nearby, at bicycle distance. The cottage has its own parking lot. The Cottage is in fact a spacious studio, furnitured with a comfortable bench, flatscreen TV, dining table with two (too light) dining table chairs and simple but complete kitchen and kitchen ware. Also a large two persons bed. The bathroom is large enough and complete with heater, toilet, sink and shower cabin. In front of the bench in the living is an electric "fireplace". Although the kitchen is very complete, although cooking fish or curries is not allowed. For that there is a gas BBQ available which worked good. There is free wifi, use "main" and wifi is stable and fast enough. The room rate is in balance with the delivered space, location and facilities. It is more a Cottage or studio than hotel or motel.

A good place for nature lovers and trail walkers.

We struggled to find accommodation in Kaikoura, even booking a couple of weeks ahead, so by default our choice of Bay Cottages was forced upon us slightly - though we were very, very pleased with this decision in the end. We enjoy peaceful settings and No: 2 Bay Cottages gave us this opportunity to enjoy the real merits of Kaikoura. The small town itself offers a few things for travellers and the tourist information centre is excellent, but there are very few small grocery shops and if you are in need of provisions, it is best to go out of town passed the train station to the supermarket. There are several eating places in the middle of Kaikoura, but nothing of note around Bay Cottages, though the kitchenette has everything you need to make a decent basic meal. Overall our little cottage was well equipped, looked freshly refurbished and was very clean. The bed was very comfortable & the shower room was excellent with good toiletries provided. We loved the peninsula walk, which was easily accessible from the South Bay and would also recommend the public footpath over the hill into the main Kaikoura town area. We used the Kaikoura shuttle/taxi (which was very reliable) to get to the railway station with our bags, which we were able to store there while we waited for our train to Christchurch in the afternoon.
Peace and quiet will definitely be offered by Bay Cottages, so do give them a try!
