We stayed here as a stop over before Auckland, and cannot fault this place. The hosts are very kind and friendly. There is the option to dine in their restaurant for dinner, which we did not, but it looked nice. The room was spacious, but the wifi was a bit patchy, but perhaps cause we were in the room furthest from the front room. We had a free inclusive breakfast of tea/filter coffee, eggs, and bacon. I recommend staying here if you’re in the area.

Comfortable stay, friendly hosts

I stayed with my mother and sister for 3 nights last week. The service we received was excellent, and nothing was too much of a hassle for Jackie who is a wonderful host. We had a cooked breakfast each morning, and dinner there on two of the three evenings.  We were the only ones there and enjoyed the lounge, Tea making facilities, and the TV. Wil definitely stay again.

Peaceful, convenient with outstanding service

We were staying at the Matakohe camp ground with friends and noticed that Matakohe House had a sign out saying “licensed cafe and bar” so on Saturday late morning all walked there for something to eat and drink. We approached the house from the lawns at the front and the owner yelled from the veranda “You can f*#k off with those dogs this is private property “. We were stunned to say the least at both the language and the reception! 
We moved away but my partner approached and asked if the bar and cafe was open and was very rudely told “No!” 
Not exactly the friendly hospitable reaction one expects from someone in hospitality. Needless to say will never stay there and will give it a wide berth. It does make for an amusing “dining with friends” story though.

Astonishing rudeness

Jackie and Daniel are very friendly people who manage to make your stay feel like home. We arrived unexpected. Didn't book in advance which is a bit tricky. Because you have the chance of no vacancy. But most of the times it ends up in marvelous stays. Like now in Matahoke House. The hospitality of Jackie and Daniel deserves a golden medal. I think when we arrived, the kitchen was closed already. But especially for us they made the time to cook a lovely meal. Jackie let us try a piece of her own baked cakes. DELICIOUS!! 
The rooms in Matakohe House are spacious. Nice decorated and clean. 
And breakfast in the Gumdiggers café in opposite is also great. Thanks again for letting us stay in your wonderful B&B

Very good stay and delicious self baked cake

We were the only guests at this large and very comfortable guest house on the night we stayed.  We enjoyed the use of the sitting room with tea and coffee making facilities, and a fridge, and our lage room at the rear had a lovely view of the surrounding countryside.  We were made very welcome by Jackie and enjoyed a delicious cooked breakfast at her cafe across the road the next morning.

Rural peace and quiet

When my wife and I were returning to Aukland from the far North, we decided to break up the long trip by stopping Opononi one night and Matakohe the following night.  The Matakohe House was perfect for us.  The room was spacious, very clean and faced a magnificent rolling countryside.  The proprietors were very welcoming - there was small decanter of sherry to enjoy the scenery with.   The breakfast that came with the room was served at the nearby cafe and was a hearty eggs, bacon and toast.   If you crave rural peace and quiet, the Matakohe House is highly recommended.  Matakohe is quite small and mostly consists of an art gallery, a Kauri museum and a cafe.  However,  there is a pub within a  10-15 minute drive that serves a very good dinner. 

Quiet and Restful Stop

Absolutely delightful place to stay. Well worth a visit. Food is awesome and the hosts are just so welcoming ,friendly and a delight to be around. Even the cat is lovely. 10/10 from us. Thank you so much

Delightful!!!

Spent hours visiting the Kauri Museum and decided to find accommodations nearby. This b+b was a very short distance. Elegant, clean, quiet and welcoming. The next morning treated to a gourmet breakfast served by the owners. Would return in a heartbeat,  but there was more to see in the Dargaville area. This is a hidden gem.
