I stayed at Happy Apple Backpackers for about 2 months and I wholeheartedly enjoyed my stay. The hostel itself is great. The facilities are clean (except when the inhabitants don’t clean up after themselves, but that’s not the owners fault) and - with a nice lounge complete with a poolroom and a fireplace, a huuge chilling area with couches, a massive backyard with several tables, an outside gym, a volleyball net and tabletennis - there’s really always something to do or somewhere to go if you want some alone time. 
It’s definitely not the craziest party hostel I’ve seen either, there’s been the occasional loud-ish night but mostly people are very considerate. 
It’s very clear that the owner Kelly really likes her job and does it with pride (which she should, she’s doing an excellent job), it radiates through the atmosphere of the hostel. 
10/10, thank you for the last couple of months Kelly.

No complaints

Great place with awesome vibes, everyone is so friendly, great space out the back for fun and games, couches and common areas to just hang out!!! Loved it. Nice spacious kitchen, can stay in dorms or private rooms or park your van up!

Awesome place

I was content with the accommodation. What blew me out of the water was how accommodating and helpful Kelly is!! She helped me with stowing a whole lot of stuff after check out so I could go into Abel Tasman National Park for a big trek and she also advised and booked my ferry for that. She even suggested a close by lunch place that was delicious when she learned I was a bit time squeezed. She made this place for me.

The Happy Apple was our home base for four nights as we explored Tasman and Golden Bays. We were very pleased with the cleanliness, fully equipped and large kitchen, great indoor and outdoor spaces, and overall chill vibe. We enjoyed chats with the friendly owner and appreciated that it was not right in town, which was only a short walk away. We have already recommended the place to friends and would stay again ourselves. 

Exactly what we were looking for

I really enjoyed staying in the Happy Apple Backpackers in Motueka. 
I stayed there mainly for work which you get very fa at and easy in the peak season between January and May. Kelly, the very nice hostel manager conveys jobs, when possible and offers wwofing as well.
The hostel has a great yard with a volleyball pitch, a nice huge chill area outside and a pool table.
The sanitary facilities are always nice and clean. In the peak season the sanitary facilities are sometimes too small but that is almost the only criticsm I have.

Stayed for more than 4 months and felt very comfortable

Very friendly staff, made to feel personally welcome. large kitchen including cooking essentials e.g pots, pans and crockery. Spacious relaxing area which is perfect in the summers evening to relax outside. Free WiFi but don't rely on it as it cuts in and out. The bed wasn't great but can't complain for the price. Would stay again. 

Great backpackers, value for money

Stayed in this hostel after hiking at the Abel Tasman. Cute hostel. Big kitchen area. Pool table. I got my own room because the guys I was traveling with had some snoring issues. The room was big enough for me and my luggage where I didn’t feel cramped. Would definitely stay here again. 

Cute hostel 

This place has everything you need and is clean and comfortable. There is plenty of space for camping with tents, parking for cars. They have loads of entertainment including tv in room (we booked a double), table football, pool table,  dart board, basketball hoop.

It’s a little far out from the centre of town but they have free bikes to hire to get in.

All in all a great place to see to explore this part of the region.

Great backpackers

Stayed 3 nights and used it as a jumping off point for Abel Tasman NP. The room was good, the showers and kitchen were heavily used and the fridges had not been cleaned in ages. Good value and the owner is delightful and we found the overall experience to be good

Be prepared for a hostel full of fruitpickers

I would have loved staying here when I was 21 years old!  No older and wanting a night’s sleep before a long drive south it wasn’t the best choice. The partying went on til 3.30am so we left at 9am a bit grumpy and sleep deprived, calling it the Rotten Apple.
I guess it was a lesson learned to avoid cheap backpackers unless you’re young and up for an all nighter.
