The people who stayed at the Hostel made my time really good, but I cannot say the same from the owners.
The facilities are always dirty, bathrooms, kitchen, especially rooms, I always vacuumed and did my bed by myself every week in the room and also put rubbish bag and fragance because they never doing them work. Everytime I ask for cleaning my room, I had to do it by myself. They don't know how to manage a hostel.
They also don't allow people who stayed before in the accommodation to visit us after they left.

The owner should be nicer to customers

The place has a distinct dampness issue and smells of mould and is stuffy.  Communal areas such as the showers were clean. Beds are comfortable enough, but happy we only booked one night given the smell.

I stayed at Happy Apple Backpackers for about 2 months and I wholeheartedly enjoyed my stay. The hostel itself is great. The facilities are clean (except when the inhabitants don’t clean up after themselves, but that’s not the owners fault) and - with a nice lounge complete with a poolroom and a fireplace, a huuge chilling area with couches, a massive backyard with several tables, an outside gym, a volleyball net and tabletennis - there’s really always something to do or somewhere to go if you want some alone time. 
It’s definitely not the craziest party hostel I’ve seen either, there’s been the occasional loud-ish night but mostly people are very considerate. 
It’s very clear that the owner Kelly really likes her job and does it with pride (which she should, she’s doing an excellent job), it radiates through the atmosphere of the hostel. 
10/10, thank you for the last couple of months Kelly.

No complaints

I really enjoyed staying in the Happy Apple Backpackers in Motueka. 
I stayed there mainly for work which you get very fa at and easy in the peak season between January and May. Kelly, the very nice hostel manager conveys jobs, when possible and offers wwofing as well.
The hostel has a great yard with a volleyball pitch, a nice huge chill area outside and a pool table.
The sanitary facilities are always nice and clean. In the peak season the sanitary facilities are sometimes too small but that is almost the only criticsm I have.

Stayed for more than 4 months and felt very comfortable

Stayed 3 nights and used it as a jumping off point for Abel Tasman NP. The room was good, the showers and kitchen were heavily used and the fridges had not been cleaned in ages. Good value and the owner is delightful and we found the overall experience to be good

Be prepared for a hostel full of fruitpickers

I would have loved staying here when I was 21 years old!  No older and wanting a night’s sleep before a long drive south it wasn’t the best choice. The partying went on til 3.30am so we left at 9am a bit grumpy and sleep deprived, calling it the Rotten Apple.
I guess it was a lesson learned to avoid cheap backpackers unless you’re young and up for an all nighter.

No sleep

I spent a couple of days in this hostel but it was never a comfortable situation. The long-term stayers who work in the area were not friendly at all and there were a couple of men who were drunk or on something else, screaming at night and making the atmosphere quite strage. The manager was not great at managing the place so a bad/weird experience altogether.

Mad house! - screams, fights and tense vibe

I stayed in a private room here, but considering the ruckus on the weekend I heard, I imagine I might have been pretty disturbed in a dorm room. 
The bed was horrible- I’ve only had worse at
one other place. And the window had no screen but it was very hot weather and no fan in the room, so it was either roast from heat or get eaten by bugs all night. 
I liked how much space the place offered for common living- lots of couches, a game room and yard. Decent amount of kitchen stuff too- lots of utensils. 
This hostel seemed to be a place where a lot of people lived. Big groups of French and German people were filling the kitchen almost 24/7 loudly talking and playing music. The kitchen was often left very dirty. Many people seemed to be waiting around for fruit picking jobs. Definitely a place for very young adults, not families or anyone over 25. Not my favorite vibe as someone who wanted something more chill like most of the holiday parks I’ve stayed at. 

Decent option near Abel Tasman

Very friendly staff, made to feel personally welcome. large kitchen including cooking essentials e.g pots, pans and crockery. Spacious relaxing area which is perfect in the summers evening to relax outside. Free WiFi but don't rely on it as it cuts in and out. The bed wasn't great but can't complain for the price. Would stay again. 

Great backpackers, value for money

Great place with awesome vibes, everyone is so friendly, great space out the back for fun and games, couches and common areas to just hang out!!! Loved it. Nice spacious kitchen, can stay in dorms or private rooms or park your van up!
