We stayed in a double room upstairs and the bed was comfortable and the room clean and well heated. We had great views to the mountains. The shared bathroom facilities were right across the corridor. Great facilities downstairs; lounge, dining area, good size kitchen, seperate tv room.  Lovely staff very helpful and friendly . Did the Hooker Valley Walk which is a definite must do. Next time will do the Governors bush walk that starts behind the public shelter.  Also did the helicopter flight up to the Tasman Glacier, but due to wind so we were taken over to the Murchison Glacier, which was amazing.  Also enjoyed buffet dinner at The Heritage.  Thank you to the YHA for your wonderful facilities and awesome staff on site..

Great stay, comfortable and clean.

You can't go wrong with this place. Everything is clean and warm, they have sauna and nice hangout areas to meet people. The staff are so nice too Shout out to Richard and Erika for delivering an outstanding service!

This is place is awesome!

YHA Aoraki is located about 5 minutes drive from the start of the Hooker Valley Track. As you could imagine, in winter, the most important factor is warmth. Our room was warm as we arrived, and there was a heater we could turn on which was nice. The showers at the YHA were so good.

You should probably get food in Tekapo or Twizel before heading to Mount Cook, but they do sell food (like canned chickpeas and pasta) at reasonable prices. The reception was very friendly.

The walls were thin however, as you can sometimes hear talking, and alarms in the morning.

Hooker Valley Stopover

I visited Queens Birthday Weekend,  the first long weekend post our Covid Lockdown that many have been able to get out domestically.  
The YHA Team had a great plan and procedures in place to maintain health and safety standards.  
With spacing requirements,  the hostel had no vacancies - meaning I had the treat of only two peole in an 8 bed dorm! As per NZ YHA standards,  the beds were comfy,  everything - beds, rooms, bathrooms, common areas- all well cleaned and maintained.  For once, I didn't melt overnight (I usually find dorm rooms overheated - but I know that I run warm). Showers wonderfully hot, with good pressure.  
Lovely to see the TV room also had a Wellness Space - padded matting that would be perfect for post-hike stretching, or a spot of yoga.  
I had been intending to treat myself a night in a local luxury hotel,  as they were closed,  they missed out - but,  TBH - the YHA more than met my needs,  and again reminds me that a YHA is usually the perfect accommodation choice.

My absolute favourite discovery was inside the former fire hose cupboard - brought a big smile to my face :-)

Perfect spot

Would like to just say that this hostel given the time of my stay where is was stressful as everyone needed to leave and get out due to lockdown coming, the hostel did a fab job and helped everyone will transport out and made sure everyone had transport to get out.

Very friendly team that had no problem refunding a couple of people that cut their stay short as well.

Well done YHA Mount Cook

I just arrived in that yha, traveling from New Caledonia. Room is just so cosy and Erika at reception so funny 🙊 after 2 hours hiking on glacier, the perfect place to have rest!!

Awesome

This hostel is a clean and comfortable place to stay while visiting Mt Cook.  The kitchen and common areas are spacious and inviting.  They have lots of helpful information posted on the walls.  The staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating.  I highly recommend this hostel!

Great Spot!

Stayed here as a family of 4 people recently. The Mt Cook area, and the drive besides Lake Tekapo to reach it, is stunning in its beauty. The fact that this hostel is mostly made out of wood only adds to the charm of the place. Now for the review:

Location - The Mt Cook village is really small (less than 30 buildings), so anywhere in the village is good location! This hostel (and the village) is located a fair drive from the main highway, so only those who want to stay in Mt Cook area or the dark sky reserve should plan to stay here. Having said that, we absolutely enjoyed our stay and the view of the sky at night with hardly any city lights.

Price - Reasonably priced, though I don't know what other properties in the area charge.

Services - Fair amount of parking, Average in-room Wifi, large kitchen, large indoor/ outdoor seating area, credit card operated vending machine for snacks, smallish sized room with 4 bunk beds, clean bathroom/ facilities. One interesting thing about this hostel is that it has a dry sauna in the hostel itself. We didn't have time to use it, but definitely not something we have seen at other hostels. The hostel also has a board where those who are going in different directions and can offer/ need a ride can post messages, and travelers can coordinate.

The Mt Cook village closes by 5 PM or so and there are no other shops here, so please buy supplies/ food/ anything else before you leave the highway for Mt. Cook village (Lake Tekapo town is the closest place in one direction, not sure about the other direction).

Overall, would recommend this to anyone who wants a reasonably priced accommodation in Mt. Cook village.

TIP: We had initially booked at another YHA nearby, but requested for a change due to a change in our itinerary. The YHA team is easy to talk to, and made the change quickly without any fees (only had to pay the difference in room rates). They said that because we booked through the YHA website, and not through third parties, its easy to make the change.

Beautiful wooden hostel in the middle of mountain ranges!!

Stayed here during the week to show friends from overseas the beautiful Mount Cook region and to take part in the Mt Cook Marathon. Was amazed at how friendly and helpful the staff were, they even let us return to shower after the run before we headed away. The hostel was very clean and well organised. Would highly recommend and would stay again!

Stayed for half marathon

We rented a private room in the YHA. The louge/eating area offered great views of the surrounding mountains including Aoraki; means that you dont even have to leave the hostel! Facilities are bog-standard hostel but the light coloured wood interior and the log-cabin-esque means there is more than a tpuch of class. A dry sauna is inside so bring your togs/swimsuit no matter the season!
