Judging by other reviews this will stick out like a sore thumb but equally it would not be correct to ignore the facts.  We arrived about an hour or so before a booked pick up to attend a gourmet wine tasting trip, the drive taking longer than planned and the lodge a bit further away from town than expected.  We had hoped for a quick check in, shower, change and out again.   Unfortunately on arrival we found that we were not expected even though our paperwork was correct.  Compounding this, a couple had extended their stay by one night so that the room we had booked was no longer available. It was suggested that the booking agency was at fault.   An alternative room was suggested, and even the option of sharing a bathroom with other guests, but this was not acceptable.  With no time to find alternative accommodation we finally accepted the offer to take the owners own en-suite facilities so that we could go out as planned.  Whilst this was a solution, it was not what we paid for and not really satisfactory.   The next morning, as we were on the "wrong side" of the house we were subject to the early breakfast preparation noises which  was also not good.  Breakfast itself was average, asking not to have an egg in one case and no avocado in the other was we felt not well received.  Similarly, asking for and receiving  a small refund on the hardly low price we had paid for the booked room did not go down well.
We were more than happy to leave.

Unfortunate Circumstances

The room was great, the bathroom extraordinary and iris was fabulous.  One of the best places we stayed in New Zealand.  Iris immediately invited us for a glass of wine  encouraged us to go for a dip in the pool or hot tub and made a dinner reservation for us,    Just terrific,  kiwi hospitality at its best

The experience at the Wateal Lodge could not have been better.  Iris was a great host, the room was very comfortable and breakfast was superb.  Very intimate setting, our 1st NZ getaway and weekend to remember.  Napier has world class restaurants, stunning beaches, great trails and superb wine.  I could not think of a better way to spend a weekend...or more.  Thanks Iris, we shall come again for sure,

What a stunning B&B. From the outside it looks like a black barn; from the inside, a five-star hotel. You'll be totally surprised and blown away. Everything is simply stunning. Even breakfast was scrumptious. And to top it all, we had our laundry done for free. All in all, top drawer. Strongly recommended! 

Quality chic

We loved staying at Watea Lodge. Our room was very comfortable, and Iris has thought of everything that guests might enjoy, from the guest lounge to the lap pool. Breakfast was delicious on both mornings and we loved sharing stories with Iris.
