We booked the family room. Got very little sleep as it’s right above the kitchen which was busy and noisy with inconsiderate people to god knows what time. The noise started up again at 5am.
The room itself was fine, decent shower. Tv only had 3 channels when it worked properly.
Parking was ok but pretty close together.
We wouldn’t stay again.


Not the best

The unfriendly, rude, condescending American man who handled our booking and stay. 

The shower head was broken in one of the bathrooms. 

Lodge manager failed to provide enough toilet paper in the bathrooms. 

There were not enough communal spaces, and the kitchen was very dirty. 

The beds were uncomfy and the lighting in the rooms were terrible. 

The doors to the toilet cubicles were too low so other guests could see over.

Horrible stay, appalling service

We booked online and arrived later than anticipated. We were still able to check in ok. The lodge has off-street parking but it was a bit tight.
We ended up on the older side of the lodge. The rooms were small but clean. The toilets were in a separate room from the showers and both were tidy. There was also a fairly large drying room which was very handy for wet gear. The lounge area was huge and quite comfortable. it would have been amazing had the fireplace been on. The kitchen was a bit on the older side. It did have a pair of stoves with ovens but we weren't able to get the oven going properly. It also had a microwave too. 
Although the facilities were a bit older, we were paying around $30 per person so it was a steal. The location isn't too bad as it's located down the road from SkiBiz and National Park isn't that large. It was a comfortable stay and would gladly come back if I'm starting in that area.

Great Accomodation Prices

We stay here two nights  to do the crossing.
 Has everything we needed.
 A clean spotless place with lovely helpful staff .
 The rooms are warm and great kitchen facilities 
The shuttle was organised with a's for us right outside the front and to come back to a hot spa 🥰 absolutely brilliant really recommend this place great for  families.

Brilliant place 

This was a nice place to stay considering the cost was quite reasonable.  After hiking the Tongariro Crossing, it was nice to come back to a place with a nice hot shower in the en suite.
Beds were a bit on the soft and spongy side, but otherwise a great little room.

Great Value

We stayed for 4 days in January 2021.  Unbeknown to us, our room (number 66)  was directly over a diesel generator, and about 5m away from a gas pump. (we discovered this on our last night).  The underfloor heating was running and it was stinking hot so our windows were wide open.  For 4 days we breathed in toxic gases leading to nausea, headaches and sore throats.  So much for a holiday in the pristine National Park!

I'm sad to leave such a terrible review, but my letter to Howards Lodge has not been responded to - it appears they have not taken this complaint seriously.

Carbon monoxide poisoning spoilt our trip

absolutely loved this place. Spent 2 nights in the Ruapehu wing and we loved it. Housed 10 of us including kids, continental breakfast was yum. Service was fantastic and it was handy to Whakapapa. The place was warm and inviting and we'll definitely be booking in next season

FANTASTIC Accommodation

It was tidy and clean. You get what you pay for 😊 we were looking for somewhere cheap but still nice. Only thing was the spa was out of order and that was one of the reasons we choose to stay there. .

Nice room

We arrived at National Park by the Northern Explorer train and wondered what this quiet, unassuming town (aka  frontier town, without the tumbleweed!) would offer, then we made our way to Howard’s Lodge for 3 nights before we caught the train again into Wellington. Firstly we were greeted by Tracey the new, but very enthusiastic and organised manager and we knew we’d settle in well. There were no en-suite double rooms left when we booked, so we had to settle for an en-suite twin room, which was clean, fairly basic, but adequate for our needs. The shower produced lots of hot water at any time of the day, so that was great. Other people have mentioned the noise in parts of the lodge and you can hear travellers preparing to set off early in the morning for walks etc, so this might affect light sleepers. Our main purpose for travelling to this area was of course to do the Alpine crossing, just like many other people and we were able to plan the shuttle run we needed for $40 per person, through Tracey at the Lodge. As so many people are travelling, accommodation in the area seems to come at a premium - we found it quite difficult to find and was a bit expensive in comparison with other places. Don’t expect the Hilton, when you stay at Howard’s Lodge, but do be assured that the staff are really helpful and work hard, especially Jo and her team of cleaners. We loved meeting a range of nationalities and ages in the communal lounge and kitchen, so this was part of the appeal of the place. We would definitely recommend Howard’s Lodge to real travellers and would urge tourists to give it a try too!

A friendly, clean and simple place to stay.

Stayed here one night as part of a motorcycle tour of NZ with my wife.

Plus points:
- was clean and well kept rooms
- great recommendation of local food places from Duty Manager. 
- on site car parking. 

Negative points : 
- the room we got was a box room with shared facilities.  This wasn’t clear when making the booking.
- Duty Manager changed the room to an en-suite which was great.
- The place was noisy.  From early AM we heard people tramping through the hallway, doors opening and banging closed. Just a noisy place to stay.
- if booking make sure to ask for a room that has en-suite and is also quiet.

It was passable for a night but if you’re a couple on a travelling holiday and wanting a bit of comfort then this is a bit simple and expensive for what you get.
