Parking was possible right in front of the door. Unfortunately, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing was blocked at the time we were there due to a death. So we were somewhat undecided on how to proceed with our trip. The staff then offered us to extend the night, which we did not use. The room is very spartanly furnished and was not really clean. Washing was not too expensive, unfortunately only 3 out of 4 washing machines and 1 out of 4 dryers worked! On our 3.5 week trip to New Zealand, this was the only accommodation where you had to pay for WiFi. So we did not use it.

It's disappointing.

Had a single room and bed was so comfortable. Towel was provided. Had a heater in the room to keep you warm on a cold night. The tavern is clean and kitchen is well equip. Laundry is free and so is the dryer. Wifi is also free. Toilet has good hot water. The best thing about this place is the person who manages it. Her name is Teesh, if I am not mistaken. She is so helpful and so hospitable. She tried to get a shuttle for me to get to the famous Tongariro crossing and when there was no shuttle available, she personally took me to the crossing with no charges. I truly appreciate that. I truly recommend to stay here and enjoy the warm hospitality and the great outdoors that this tavern can offer.

A great place to stay

I stayed for 2 nights at the National Park Hotel in a single backpacker room and enjoyed my stay. It is really close to the train station but about a 20 min walk from the bus stop at the gas station. 

As far as backpackers go, this is at the top of my list. It is great for a budget traveller, and my single room was very cheap-- not too much more than staying in a several-bed dorm elsewhere. The premises was very clean and comfortable and felt like a home away from home. From the moment I was greeted when I arrived the staff and owners were so kind and friendly. They went above and beyond to make me feel welcome, which as a solo female traveller was really appreciated. The hotel has free laundry (including soap), free tea, free movies and a nice sitting/dining area. There is also free wifi that had good connection. 

The only issue I had was that I found the hotel to be rather cold, but the rooms have electrical heaters which warmed up the room in a few hours. As the hotel continues to be renovated, I would recommend more electrical outputs for electronics (e.g. near the beds) but I would definitely stay again and recommend to all travellers on a budget.

Great backpacker, super nice staff

For what we paid ($70 a night) we got what we paid for. The room was either too hot or too cold, very plain room.
Right next to Speights pub which was handy for a feed and a drink.
Staff seemed nice. 
Had to pay for wifi which we weren't happy about and is unheard of in a backpackers.

What a set up...

Great accommodation by the ski fields. ..family of 3 for 90 dollars with heating , on suite and linen....hotels and motels just up the road want over 300 ....

What gets you is rock climbing arena is inside and accommodation is built around it and a mini golf just outside. 

The key for us  was the staff attitude was one of accommodating people rather then the stay being a money making venture. ..nothing was a problem. .

A good value hostel. Clean facilities & comfortable beds with bedding & towels. Obliging staff. Very convenient with My Kiwi Adventure shuttle company across the road ready to cycle The Old Coach Road the next morning.

Good hostel with good facilities.

This hotel is well located. The reception is right. It is an ideal location for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (shuttle at 7h, price 30 dollars). Our first room was cold and wet, we had to go through the climbing wall to get to the toilets... Then we had a twin on the hot, quiet, sunny floor with the toilets included. The wifi is paid and works more or less. A kitchen and a refrigerator are available. The weather was right. I recommend this hotel. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is easily done in 6h, counting 7h with the top of the Tongariro. The indications are exaggerated, the trek is easy, it is beautiful. The most beautiful in a hotel in NZ.

Good start to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

A bus leaves the inn in the morning to take the walkers off the track and pick them up in the evening upon arrival, with financial support. The kitchen was clean and functional, as were the toilets. The dormitory was also fine.

Simple but enough for one night

Backpacker on average. Cleanliness was in the showers, kitchen and bedroom. The kitchen really felt like it was in a mountain cottage. The only complaint comes from the large number of people in the dorms (10 people). The establishment also offers a bus to take hikers to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing ($30 - a bit expensive too)

The rooms are very simple but very warm. The common showers are clean and the water is very warm. The kitchen is very functional and pleasant as a common room. We came here for the Alpine Crossing and it was very nice.
