We booked the room with an ensuited bathroom and were happy with the location. Due to peak (summer Holliday) time we may paid a bid more than usual. The breakfast was very basic and nothing special. The view from the hilltop is brilliant if there are no clouds around.

Friendly hosts and brilliant view during sunny days

I've been there staying for only one night. But the place is good, location on the top of the hill opens up for marvelous views. Hosts are friendly and positive. Definitely like.
Make sure what expectations you have from the breakfast, as it is a basic continental breakfast: toast, milk, cerealas. bring in your fruits or veggies, or eggs :)

Although finding the property was a bit of a challenge, and driving up the hill the first time was a bit intense, our two night stay at the Hilltop was very good.

Owners, Murray and Pauline were great. Murray is a jack-of-all-trades and has many engaging stories to share. Plus he's a really good grille chef!

This property is basically a bed and breakfast. Murray had breakfast on the table at 6:30 every morning. The property was full and most of the guests joined us for breakfast. Lots of great stories and shared experiences. Although guests were free to use the kitchen for dinner, the one night we ate there everyone brought their own food and we had a large pot-luck style dinner on the deck with Murray grilling the meat and sharing some of his homegrown produce.

The views were amazing. Wildlife was abundant including some wild pigs crossing the valley one morning. 

Our lower level bedroom was comfortable. We had twin beds. The shared bathroom was right next door and was more than adequate. We seldom had to wait to use it.

We would definitely stay at the Hilltop B&B again.

Awesome Stay at the Hilltop

Full of facts review......Let's start with the location. Hilltop is a few kilometers outside Paihia and you will need a car to get you to the restaurants / bars etc. Be careful not to miss the small wooden sign on the left of the road (opposite Appledore lodge which has a big pink sign). Please make sure you have your gate code from Murray (the owner) - as noted by a previous reviewer. The hill up to the house is a challenge - Murray mentioned to us that some guests had experienced getting their non- 4x4 vehicles up the very steep, un-metalled hill.
When you get there, however, the views are stunning of the land all around. The house is lovely and the balconies are very pleasant to use. The room was functional and clean. As was the shared bathroom. Breakfast was basic and functional too - fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt and toast. 
This is not a luxury place, but neither is it a hostel. It's kind of in between.....and that is where it feels a little conflicted. If you want to stay in Murray and Pauline's home and share their social space with them and their family and friends then this is for you. But, if you want to have your own space and time with private ensuite type facilities then this will not meet your expectations. Nor will it if you are looking for a little luxury stay away - this is like staying at your favorite aunty's neighbours!

Homespun farm-stay style B&B

We stayed here on 4/5 th February and trust me it was just superb. Clean,luxurious and tastefully decorated rooms welcomed us. The owners Murray and Paulline were very warm and very hospitable. They even take care of our Barbecue party with all enthusiasm and offered some of their homegrown products too. I was really happy with the stay. Value for money. Total satisfaction.
