Very welcoming and accommodating owners who are super easy-going and approachable. Really big lounging and dining area which was great for our big group to hang out together. a nice outdoor area, really nicely kept with plenty of room to chill out with friends. Nice and comfortable sleeping set up, meets all your needs and more. I highly recommend staying at the Pickled Parrot.

Great Stay

Stayed for one night on recent trip up north. Great hostel, very friendly and helpful welcome. Excellent suggestions for things to see and do locally. Didn't use, but kitchen looked decent if were cooking. Nice and quiet at night for a good sleep! 

1 Night Stay Paihia

We had a lovely stay, hosts were very friendly and helpful.
Facilities are clean and well maintained. Cute vegetable garden and great outdoor dining area. Showers and toilets are just like home (not the typical backpacker style). They have to be the friendliest hosts we've met. 

Best hostel 

It's the attention to detail that sets this apart from other hostels.  Everything was kept very clean, tidy and organised, and the owner was very helpful and friendly.   Having the label and basket system for food kept in the kitchen and fridge  made it easy to keep track of our food.  Having fresh vegetables  in the garden that  can be shared and little bits and pieces that you might have forgotten at home in the shared kitchen/dining area were lovely touches.   We stayed in a  private room with a double bed as a couple, and the bed was very comfortable.  Shared bathroom facilities were clean and tidy.  The shared kitchen/dining area, deck and cute garden has plenty of space and is a comfortable haven to relax in after a day of sightseeing.   Short walk to Paihia town centre and the ferry over to Russell.  Lots of people staying at the hostel were hiking the Te Araroa (TA) trail and it seemed like there were plenty of resources to help on the hike.

Unfortunately, we only stayed here one night, I could have stayed there forever! Super cozy hostel with a huge outdoor area. Large, well-equipped kitchen. Several bathrooms. Everything very clean and well maintained. The owner is super nice.

A dream hostel

The pickled parrot is indeed a chilled hostel, the facilities are fine and the location is good. However based on our experience I would not recommend it. We had booked a cabin and were downgraded down to a 2 bunk dorm without any prior communication. We booked in Aug 2019 which I understand now was under old management but the booking was for Dec 2019 and to my knowledge the new owners took over in Oct 2019 so more than enough time to sort out existing bookings and contact us regarding any possible issues. The lady behind reception (which I assume is the new owner) didn't seem fazed at all that we were unaware of any changes and was unapologetic. She simply replied "it's better than no room" and due to the time of year, all other accommodation nearby was fully booked so she knew we had no choice but to agreed. If there was availability elsewhere we would of taken it. From then on out we received a smug attitude which made our stay quite uncomfortable. Safe to say we'd book elsewhere if we were to go to Paihia again.

Wouldn't Recommend

Very cute grounds and cute rooms. Colourful and fun vibe and great location, just walked everywhere in Paihia. Cherry is also lovely, helpful and accommodating. Signed the wall and were so glad we could stay.

cute as place to stay

Down a little lane, tucked away from the main road, it's only a very short, flat walk to the beach. Although next to one of the main roads, you don't really hear any traffic - it certainly didn't keep me awake. The new owners are lovely. I read some of the older reviews before I stayed, and I was a bit nervous, but it seems ALL the issues other people have stated they had have been fixed. The roomy kitchen is clean and well stocked with crockery and cutlery, pots and pans. There is a dining room and a covered deck. There is free tea, coffee, sugar and milk for guests to use. The linen and rooms are clean and tidy and smell nice, the bed was very comfortable and the pillow was nice!! (I usually take my own - but no need here). Some gorgeous outdoor areas and a nice touch is the wall (I Perched At The Parrot) where you can sign your name. There are some eco-friendly things starting up - recycling, composting, a worm farm, and I understand there will be fruit trees and more edibles planted soon to share. Love it! The place is not new, so it's full of character. This is definitely NOT a party hostel - it's lovely and quiet from 10pm onwards. If you want that party stuff, it's only a short walk down the road, but I really appreciated the quiet here. I've travelled a fair bit in NZ, and I highly recommend the Pickled Parrot.

Highly recommended

Pickled Parrot is a lovely hostel to stay in. It’s very close to central Paihia, and there is lots of information about deals and things to do in the hostel. It is a welcoming place with clean facilities. 

Fantastic Facilities

The Pickled Parrot in general was a nice enough place, but watch out if you’re booking online because when you get there Rose will take your details again and you end up paying double. We contacted her the nxt day and told her that we have been charged twice and she said she would look into it. Needless to say we’ve never heard from her again. I know it was only $70 but it’s the principal of it.
I found her ignorance quite rude.
Definitely would NOT return.
