If you've been traveling for a bit and staying at hostels, then you know the difference between the basic, dorm-style hostels and the family home-style hostels. 
The Fat Cod is a family home hostel and creates the feeling of home during your visit. The staff are lovely and if you leave without having a conversation with the owner, Rachel, then you've missed out on half the fun. 

The rules are simple, treat the place like your own home and it will be your home. It's not a party, go crazy hostel, nor would you want it to be. It has a second story patio that looks out onto the harbour, perfect for a morning cup of tea or to stretch with a beautiful scenery. There's a wood burning stove that is lit on chilly nights. The lounge area has a pool table and entertainment center for your relaxing needs. 

This is a great hostel for meeting other travelers with its relaxed environment and is a place like home while on your travels. 

Home Sweet Home

Staff were friendly on check in and very helpful, however facilities are very old and out dated, situated right next to the main railway station which operates 24/7 which unfortunately we could hear everything. No breakfast the following morning even though we paid for it.

Average to be kind

The bedrooms are tidy as well as the public areas. Staff is very friendly and helpful! The best part is the free soup in winter and breakfast as well as the fire. It's directly in the city centre and 3 minutes walk from the ferry. Enjoyed my stay pretty much!

Cozy

Okay I had 4 nights in Picton at the Fat Cod Backpackers with not a problem at all .. everything ran smooth the owners and there staff we always nice and happy!! Place was very very clean .. nice kitchen area nice common areas really just a perfect place to stay and relax in Perfect Picton and you are close to everything will see you again at the end of my South Island photo tour. ONCE AGAIN BIG THANKS!!!!

JUST A PEFECT BACKPACKERS Simple as that!!!

I spent almost a month in this hostel with my boyfriend, we felt at home! Several people were here for a long time because they worked in the city, and the environment was pleasant and serene. There is a TV/movies area, pool table, table games, outdoor terrace and the kitchen is well provided (2 ovens!) the tea and coffee are free. The hostel is run by a family, Rachelle and her son Devon were very kind and very available to us, helping us when we had difficulties even though they had no interest in it. Like at home.

Not sure why this hostel has some bad reviews, we had spent the previous night in a really awful hostel across the road and in comparison the Fat Cod was heavenly! Staff were lovely, the facilities are great and were all really clean and quite modern, there was loads of nice open space to hang out in too and a roaring fire going which was a bonus! It had a really nice chilled out atmosphere and the dorm room was absolutely fine, comfy beds and the whole hostel was much quieter at night than most that we have stayed in. Thanks for having us, we would definitely stay again! 

Really nice hostel! 

I spent one night at the Fat Cod and I must say I really enjoyed it. The hostel has a very cozy atmosphere, including a fireplace, which leads to a cozy warm climate, especially from the cold outside. The bathrooms may have come a little over the years, but clean! No point of criticism for me. The rooms are full of occupancy, maybe a little narrow. I can only recommend this hostel! It's mostly very quiet.

Really good hostel

It's a nice place for a night before the ferry, a friendly atmosphere around a good movie and a big board, and some of the bedrooms are poorly laid out, so when there are 12 passengers with big bags it's hard to get around, except the staff is friendly and it's very close to the center.

Correct

I chose this hostel because of the proximity to the port from which the ships depart for the northern island, I was very well received and the place is very cozy. There is a nice supermarket nearby, take the opportunity to buy some products and make a nice meal in the kitchen of the hostel.

It's worth it.

The room was fine, but the rest was no, bathrooms with dirty paper on the floor, showers with bad smell due to worn-out material, kitchen with a lot of dirty and abandoned food, slow wifi even though it was 1gb the pages didn't load and fell off.
