We had the best long weekend staying at Manuka Lodge. Toni (and Murphy the dog) was a great host and gave us lots information about things to do in the area. The unit itself was very clean, comfortable, warm, and had everything we needed. The cooking facilities were even better than we expected (gas hob, fridge and plenty of cooking utensils). The location is great - loved the sea views from the balcony and it was only a short walk to the beach and store/cafe up the road. 

We had a great off the grid experience and will be back! :)

Everything we wanted and more!

A good stay on Great Barrier is about location and Manuka Lodge offer great location. The view out our studio was straight over the beach at Mulberry Grove and into the sunset. Simply stunning. The beach at Mulbery Grove is safe and shallow, great for the kids. There is a picnic table with free barbecues at the beach. Mulberry Grove has a general store/cafe/bar. There are two beaches immediately to the north. At Pah Beach there is another store/cafe/bar as well as two restaurants and the local social club.
Manuka Lodge itself is welcoming and comfortable. Power is solar (with a generator for back up in  the winter) and sufficient to support a refrigerator, hot shower, lights and recharge your phones and tablets. The room is comfortable and spacious. There is a collection of books for those that like to relax on the deck and an excellent  collection of tourist material. As well Toni has a wealth of local knowledge.
We had a great five nights, loved Great Barrier and staying at Manuka Lodge.

Location, location, location

Manuka Lodge has 2 self-contained rooms in a lodge style building. Toni, the host lives at one end of the building. The lodge is surrounded by trees and is in the small settlement of Mulberry Bay in the area of Tryphena. It is set back about 100m from the sea and there are great sea views from the balcony. The lodge is nice and quiet, there is no TV or internet but we had good cellphone reception and there are books and games provided in the rooms. The lodge runs on solar power, so you are asked to not bring high drain devices like hair-dryers, or if you want to use them, then Toni will put the generator on for you-Great Barrier is not really a place where you need a hair-dryer! the dress code is delightfully casual everywhere.
 It is a short stroll to a store and a longer stroll or short drive to the Irish pub for great craic or Tipi and Bob's Place for magnificent views while you eat. There are several artists studios nearby-Shoal Bay Pottery was the best of them.
The lodge is not super-modern,or luxurious, but it is very clean and well-equipped with everything you might need, Toni is a friendly and informative host, who offered us an orientation on arrival and was a mine of local information.
We enjoyed tramping on well-maintained tracks and deserted beaches and had a lovely day out on the boat Sundancer with a sight-seeing trip up to Port Fitzroy-highly recommended (especially the lunch!)

very happy with our choice

Toni's lodge was a great choice for our stay on Great Barrier. It's clean and comfortable, and has fantastic views of the sunset. Toni is there if you need her, but otherwise gives you your privacy. The only slight downside is that she was not accepting credit cards at the time we stayed (miss those air miles!).

4-night offseason stay

My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a week off to Great Barrier Island, being the first time in this wonderful island for both of us. We picked a busy Easter week and were lucky enough to book with enough our accomodation at Manuka Lodge for the entire stay. 
We were welcomed by the wonderful host Toni and her super sweet dog Murphy and made ourselves at home in the great accomodation. 
First thing you notice as you step into the unit is the incredible view. My first sentence was: 'can we just stay here forever?' (wich I trully wish was possible!). There is a nice bed with mosquito net (which came handy one night in particular when the mosquitos seemed to be on a rave party or something), a lovely outdoor balcony to enjoy the heavenly sunsets and a very useful kitchenette with fridge. There is a nice size shower and plenty of space  to store your luggage, including a seating area and a couch. 

We totally appreciated having a fridge available as are aware that power supply is a luxury in an off the gird island such as Great Barrier. We bought our food from home in our car and managed to cooks some great meals on the gas hob , including a thai curry and Italian style pasta. We made sure to use the recycling bins, and the pig bin, as instructed by Toni and enjoyed every minute of our holiday at Manuka Lodge. 
Night time is particuarly quiet, we were treated by incredible sunsets and starry skies in the total darkness. If you feel like socialising however, not to worry! The local irish pub is just 5 minutes drive away and it's open until late. 
Toni also works at the local radio station, and it was a fun trip going to see her at work when visiting the Easter Markets over the weekend. We felt spoiled and welcome the entire time and cannot wait to be back on the magical Great Barrier Island and at Manuka Lodge!

a week in paradise  - thank you Manuka Lodge!

This lodge is a very tranquil place. Little or no traffic noise, good birdlife with a dawn chorus. Wonderful accommodation and ensuite and good variety of appliances. Toni (owner) very accommodating and explained the 'island way of life' and the studio unit very well. Excellent roomy deck with lovely view over treetops to the sea. Great sunsets.

We stayed here as it came part of a package and we were not disappointed. 
Lovely, well equipped studio, Shower is hot and good pressure.
