Well we arrived in one of the earths mortal paradises that is Russell, 2 days ago.
Fortunately for us we booked Hannui Lodge ran by Nev and Cecelia, two absolutely wonderful people who cannot do enough for you.
This is our first time in New Zealand and we wanted to come to one of the most historic places in the country and it doesn’t get more historic than the “Hell Hole” of the pacific (Do your research folks) !
We spent a few days in underwhelming downtown Auckland, loved Devonport,Waiheke Island and Ponsonby but they don’t get close to Russell or the accommodation afforded by Hannui.
A path to the beach and a walk down the strand to superb restaurants and bars, your in the middle of everything stepping out of your room.
We absolutely loved it here and really appreciated Nev and Cecelia, great down to earth people 👍

Hannui, a must stay !

We were in annexe one block back from main building: not a problem as good sized room with balcony :don't think main part actually had a sea view . Safe parking in locked ground floor garage.

Room was comfortable, good bed shower/kitchen tho you are never going to cook a banquet. Maybe 3 mins walk to beach front; maybe 5 to jetty for ferry across to Piahia.Plenty of restaurants in town, Duke of Marlborough a bit over rated, we had a good take away fish and chips from Seaside ( on corner of beachfront and main drag): also several Thai , a small supermarket and off-license. It was quiet when we were here in early Nov but apparently gets much busier later in season

Good Motel

Hananui Lodge and Apartments is the perfect place to stay in Russell. It's on the waterfront and beautifully maintained. The modern rooms are well-appointed, light, airy, and spacious. Plus, hosts Nev and Celina are warm, friendly, and helpful. I unreservedly recommend you stay there. I will if I return to Russell.

STAY HERE - YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

For location, you couldn't beat it, a few steps to the seashore, very close to all amenities and many restaurants so that you could have a drink and not take the car.  However the actual accommodation we chose was the Boathouse attached to the apartments.  Lovely comfy bed and exceptionally clean but too small to stay more than a couple of nights.  It had a nice deck and if weather is good is lovely to sit out on and watch the world go by.  Kitchenette was very small and very small table and chairs, with no real comfy chair to sit on.  I would chose another apartment in the same complex if I returned there. Boathouse is not suitable for disabled guests but clean and tidy.

Lovely location Kororareka - Russell

Went to have a look at a room before booking. Looked great. However, when booking owner quoted prices higher than what they advertised on website. When pointed this out owner said oh well honor that, then that changed to oh we can't honor that. But I work you a good price. I'll come back to you he says, as he throw our contact details and cc information he'd written down into the bin.  Needless to say he didn't follow through on coming back and over the next hour increased all the room rates by nearly $400 per night. Dodgy scumbag behaviour. Completely lacking any integrity. Made for good conversation at the local RSA last night. Good luck!

Dodgy New Owners

Stayed in Hananui Lodge for a week following a cruise around NZ. The town of Russell is a lovely place to stay, quaint, laid back, friendly, and Hananui Lodge is the perfect place to stay whilst in Russell!
It is positioned literally a stones throw from the waterfront, and a gentle stroll away from restaurants and a bar or two....an absolutely beautiful spot. We were 2 couples in apts 9 & 10, first floor waterfront apartments and even though there were great restaurants etc nearby, it was soooo hard to drag ourselves away from the balcony and that view!
The apartments were roomy and comfortable and had everything we needed.....but if you do need anything, Kirstine and Shane are super helpful.
We all said that our stay in Russell at Hananui Lodge was our favourite part of the holiday....it's a long way from the UK, but we would return in a heartbeat if we could!

What a place!

Lovely motel with spacious units. Our ground floor unit had a lovely terrace opening on to a park and just steps from the water. Russell is charming with good shopping and restaurants and a fabulous small market in the municipal building. Kristine, the manager was welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay!

Quain seaside lodge next to a park

The room stank of burnt food and we noticed that the key given could open multiple doors, security is an issue! Upon arrival, we had to walk down a dingy alleyway to gain access to the room. The map of the lodge showed that we were beachfront but instead the room was across the road. The staff were abrupt at first and extremely rude in the end. They charged us a cleaning fee of $200 because we had a few cigarettes on the balcony. They discriminate against smokers and motorcyclists. Highly recommend looking at different accommodation.

Very disappointing

Fantastic location, so handy to everything and the waterfront is a minute walk away if that. Comfortable room and very quiet considering how central it is, although there was an outdoor fitness class right outside in the public area on our first night, but even they weren't that noisy, so not a problem.

Great Location

Comfortable , well situated accommodation . We stayed in ground floor Unit 5 which is waterfront with good sea views of the pretty bay and its everchanging vista of boats . The unit was well appointed and immaculately clean . Hananui is well located relative to restaurants, cafes, shops and supermarket yet is a very restful environment . Our hosts were friendly and helpful, yet unobtrusive . We enjoyed our stay here and hope to return in the summer to stay, including doing their fishing charter.
