We had a relaxing stay at Dawson Falls Mountain Lodge. We went to Mt. Taranaki in summer for lovely easy walks. Convenient location for us. Friendly service. We had a delicious dinner at the restaurant on site, especially after the walk and we didn't need to worry to find food. Everything was well-prepared. We enjoyed the dinner. The view from our room was spectacular. I felt relaxing just enjoying beautiful the views of nature and lovely bird sounds. Highly recommend! Also thank you for special hospitality. Very unique in NZ!

Relaxing Stay

Nice enough place, the people are genuinely lovely which is probably the saving grace. 

The lodge itself is fairly dated but clean and welcoming. The rooms were a good size and took a while to heat up, I ended up sleeping with the heating on, a sheet, duvet, and 2 blankets. I did have to go and ask for milk as the room had tea/coffee and a kettle but no milk. 

Guests cannot BYO food and alcohol - mores the pity.

The food is really bad - I cannot stress enough how bad it is. I come from a family of incredible cooks and a brother in-law who was a chef so I have a high standard for food especially when you have to pay a la carte prices! I ordered the fish - don't do it. It was old, smelled fishy, over-cooked, and I threw it back up when I got back to my room.

The rest of us ordered lamb (the jus was not jus - it was a very sweet gravy), the onion soup was more onions than soup. I would advise that you eat your main meals elsewhere.

Again, the people are lovely and friendly, you can get a good night's sleep, and the coffee is good (a regular is $5.50 which way more expensive than a Wellington coffee!)

Not value for money

Had 2 relaxing nights. Rustic, comfortable and easy access to the walking trails and the mountain.  Excellent evening meals and the unusual open fire made the lounge warm and cozy. Woke to fantastic views of the snowy peaks. Dean and the staff really looked after us.
Recommended.

Friendly cosy stay

One of the very places to stay with a young family in NZ.
We live it, have stayed their 3 times & will keep going back... We love the accommodation, the stars at night were great & so was the service.
We’ve also been with two families & everyone loved their stays.

Best accomodation on a Mountain in NZ

My hubby, son and I stayed at the lodge for two nights and it was just wonderful! The lodge room was comfy and very retro - I adored it, my teenage son thought it was weird ;) The lounge area was comfort and class deluxe and the dinners were sublime. It was a true European lodge experience and we felt so content. Super service and I can tell you that the rooms are cleaned to the highest degree - I lost a tiny opal stud earring that I couldn’t find anywhere but the manager called a few days later to say it had been found :) Awesome. The walks around the mountain are simply magnificent- we did a four-hour mostly uphill walk that was the highlight of our holiday. Thank you, team!

Heart-warming

Swiss style rooms are looking very attractive. Enough room and some rooms have beautiful views.
Meals and drinks are priced on the high end of the range. However, the location is remote and far from suppliers.
Our room failed to have a "free to service " label and did not get serviced after the first night. Rectified by staff on request, but used flanels left in bathroom. And bed remained not made up.
The second day the room received service. Though, water bottle remained empty, still used flannels in bathroom, Bathroom was not cleaned. Bed had been made, but not in a very professional way.
Expecting top service as the rooms are not priced as budget accommodation.

Great venue, pleasant service in lounge, bar and reception.

Had a lovely coffee at the cafe here, prior to one of the walks.
Service was great, and the lovely lady went out of her way to find me some headache tablets which was very much appreciated!
Looked a great place to spend the night.

Very pleasant coffee stop

We tried booking to stay here on booking.com and it looked until the very last window that there was accommodation but it had all gone when we actually tried to book. So instead we went for a coffee and cake. The coffee was excellent and the cake pleasant but very over priced and the area where you sit is not very cosy. Having to get a key to go to the toilet seems a little over the top in a hotel.

Expensive

Spent a night at Dawson Falls Lodge and loved it! Quaint, Swiss influenced rooms and decor. Dinner was spectacular and worth the journey in itself. Beautifully prepared and presented to 4 Star Plus standard.  

Lovely Relaxing Spot on the Mountain

Stayed in the honeymoon room at the lodge. It’s an authentic 100+ year old lodge which is spick and span clean ; lovely four poster bed ; fantastic service from all the staff and the evening meal was simply superb!! Nice selection of beers, great home cooked style but amped up meals and overall a great experience. Coupled with location and walks available through goblin forests and to the Dawson’s waterfall, the place is amazing. Switch off from the world and experience TRUE darkness at night all sitting just below majestic Mount Taranaki.
