I booked a twin bed in the 3 person room (the beds they advertise in most of their pictures online). During check-in I was downgraded to a 4 person bunk bed. I cant recall the guys name who served me, I think it was "Brett". His tone in my opinion was firm and not sympathetic to my situation considering I was being ripped off by this business and their simple inability to transact in a fair and transperant way to what they were advertising online.

He also said that as I was staying only 1 night it made sense to put me together in the 4 person room.

He wouldnt give me the room I prepaid for 3 weeks ago. And I was forced to go in the 4 person room with single beds or my booking would be cancelled.

It was a bad experiance and it didnt seem fair to not get what was paid for.

Also its not a very nice looking venue. It generally looks in a state of disrepair. The mens toilet for example was broken and just had a "do not use" sign on the door.

I wouldnt recommend you spend your money at this venue as Taupo as many better alternatives.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay in a private room with en-suite here. The hostel is clean and has everything you need to launch a Taupo holiday! Berkenhoff features funky decor and the owner, Brett, is a perfect host: helpful, informative and a good laugh! We will recommend this accommodation to friends, and be back ourselves.

Host with the most!

Hostel was very well located near the town and close to the hot springs. It was clean and was fine for a quick night. Owner was very friendly and helpful in giving suggestions for the area. Private room was fine and spacious enough.

Clean and friendly

I decided to come to Taupo for my birthday and managed to book here for £10 a night (20 NZ dollars). I was nervous initially, as I have been told that cheap can be a risky choice of booking (particularly in England), however I had a class stay. 

First, I arrived at the hostel, after a walk from the centre (half an hour trek) and the reception were so friendly and explained to me that they could have picked me up and the number is on the website. This was particularly nice, as they offered me a lift to my sailing trip and other hostel too. 

Second, there is a pool, pool table, ping pong, great wifi and netflix on both TVs. This made it a social place as you sat with others and squabbled over what to watch.

Third, my room had workers from the hostels, so you got to know them and didn't have the clique of always meeting new people.

Fourth, it was a real value for money, 6 nz dollars cheaper than most Taupo hostels. Everywhere was clean, even the kitchen (unlike some hostels). 

Therefore, definitely book this hostel, it is the best one I have stayed at thus far in New Zealand. Thank you to all of the staff too.

Suitable for both young and older people. Not noisy, unlike some hostels I have stayed at.

Brilliant stay at Berkenhoff.

I only have been here for two days but it was amazing. The rooms were absolutely clean and my bed was comfortable. There are two nice recreation rooms, where you can play billiard or table tennis or just relax with a book or enjoy free Netflix. 
The team ist totally friendly and gave me a lot of good ideas what to do in Taupo and helped me whenever they could.
Loved it here.

Amazing accommodation 

Us four adults booked a 4 bedroom dorm and made sure to ask that we would have the room to ourselves. You promised us when we booked in advance that we would have this, but when we arrived you told us we were in a 6 bed dorm. This was fine as you said the other two beds would not be used.

This was obviously fine, but we were disappointed when you tried to slot two other people in our room. If I hadn't checked my phone and ran down to talk to you we would have had a nasty shock when two stangers walked in.

However, the reason for our one star review was because of how you reacted when I spoke to you. When I mentioned that we had agreed on us having a 4 person room to ourselves, your response was "Is that because your Japanese?" No, Brett, people expecting the deal that they arrange is not a cultural trait. This was ignorant at best and straight racist at worst.

We're not Japanese, Brett, we are Kiwi Koreans, and we won't be coming back. A real shame as well because your hostel was otherwise great.
