Twizel is very much a summer destination so the hotel offers accommodation only 
We were warmly welcomed and immediately told that neither the restaurant nor the bar would be open.
As Twizel was just our overnight stop on our way from Christchurch to Queenstown this was not a major issue.
It became no issue at all when it was pointed out that Poppies cafe and restaurant was just across the street from the hotel 
We were given a local map and we were recommended a restaurant for our evening meal   a short drive away.
The room was large and the beds were very comfortable.  The hotel is away from the town centre so it was very quiet.  We got a good night's sleep.
Poppies lived up to its billing and the brunch set us up for the day's drive.
While I have deducted one star for the lack of onsite catering it was not an issue for us.  I would certainly be happy to return to the hotel in the summer and stay for a few days to explore the town and its surroundings.

The Mackenzie  country Hotel is looking a bit tired but is very  clean and comfortable and in a good location. Restaurant with great food especially the evening buffet. Professional friendly staff especially in the restaurant.

Great location

The rooms were fantastic as they were big and comfortable. The one big issue we had was that the front desk seemed to hardly have anyone there and you had to call a number to get someone to come and serve you. The other big issue was that there was only 3 TV channels which in a place like Twizel on a dark cold autum evening was not great and really unusual in this day and age. They advertised cable TV and when I asked why there was only 3 channels I was told that this is what cable tv is. the other thing was that we could not get into our room untiol after 3pm although in our booking it said 2pm. We were told that this was changed on their website and all online websites but this was not correct so was disappointed that after a long day we had to wait for the room to be cleaned. Having said that our room still had articles left from the previous guests so not a great look. 

Great Room pity about the TV and Front Desk

Travelled as a couple, with 13 other people, on a 16-day bus tour around New Zealand.  The tour included a one-night stay, at the Mackenzie Country Hotel, Twizel.  The room we had, was of a good size, with 2 beds, clean, bright and very comfortable.  We found the motel to be a very good place to lay our heads for the night. It's surrounded by well-kept gardens. The staff were very friendly and happy to help.  The buffet evening meal and buffet breakfast, included in the tour, were OK.  Although dated, we had a pleasant stay at this motel and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to travelers!

We stayed at the Mackenzie Country Hotel. As Kiwis would say, This hotel is a little long in the tooth. It has seen much better days and needs a gentle but thorough redo. The most egregious issue is that while they serve a substantial breakfast, they only serve INSTANT COFFEE! Can you imagine that in New Zealand where coffee seems to be as popular as beer that this hotel serves INSTANT COFFEE?!!? Our fishing guide was as astonished as we were. The hotel is large-more than 150 rooms that appear to be turned over every night as the hotel caters to numerous tour groups. And while the staff is friendly and happy to help out, for the three nights we were here our room was only serviced once and only after we asked them to do so.  There has to be better places to stay. Next time. There has to be.

Instant Coffee and Room Service

The was a great palce to stop overnight after walking in Mount Cook area. The hotel room was on the first floor and was large with two double beds and two stylish lounge chairs, a small balcony also with two chairs. The hotel was a little dated (1990s?) but perfectly fine and clean. Large bathroom with shower over bath with curtain.  No Sky Tv channels just the basics and poor (fuzzy) TV reception. 
Excellent Buffet resturant with roasts, Salads and Veges for $40NZD PP very good meal and nice surroundings. Friendly manager, Jackie very helpful and cheery. It is a large hotel for a small town and no lifts to acess first floor. Heaps of open air car parking and lovely helpful receptionists. Good value at $180NZD per night.  

Great Hotel in a small town. 

The room facing the street are looking South-South West. Therefore terribly  hot in February, until midnight. The windows wide opened allows the busy street (cars, campers, vans) to prevent you from a fresh recovery after a tiring walk. Asked fir the coolest room on arrival. Were given one getting full sun. The other side, facing the lawn, facing North, would have been more adequate. Also only ONE tea spoon for two. ONE rubbish bin only, in the bathroom. Expensive for what you get.

A comfortable & pleasant place to stay. Generous room sizes combined with large common areas are a great feature of this hotel. The restaurant seemed fairly basic but an excellent alternative is located directly across the road. With our summer stay, an air conditioner would have been nice but should not be a deal breaker.

A feeling of space & a pleasant place to stay

Rooms large but no fan, wifi poor,  banquet even meal failed to deliver. They refused to serve ice cream with the sweet, breakfast was ok but no fresh coffee, totally unacceptable, when I asked I was told the instant was very good., really, unbelievable.  Did not accept contactless at check out, not acceptable.

Disappointing, will go elsewhere next time

This is a dreadful place to stay. Avoid it! We arrived on Sunday around 17:00 for our two-night stay to enable us to explore the Mount Cook region. The young girl on the desk said she was the only member of staff in the hotel at that time and that she’d been working since 07:30. Consequently the bar and restaurant were closed. She said that we had been upgraded to a deluxe room. When we arrived in our room it was a drab and dirty family room (a double bed and two singles). The only pleasant thing about it was a view over the peaceful gardens. The bathroom was very outdated and smelled of drains. When we had a shower the bathroom drain overflowed onto the bathroom floor. We were told by the young girl on reception that even though we had pre booked and paid for a full breakfast, there was no breakfast available as the single chef was taking time off. She offered us $NZ60 in all so we could walk 10 minutes into town each morning to get breakfast at the very good Hydro cafe. We pointed out that this was an offer of $NZ 15 per day each and that it would be impossible to buy a full break fast at Hydro. She reluctantly gave us $NZ90. We arrived back at the hotel after our first day to find that although the towels had been replaced in the bathroom, our bed had not been made, tea and coffee had not been replenished and cups had not been washed or replaced. We left at 07.30 this morning as we could not wait to leave this dirty hotel. Reception was not open and all exterior and interior doors were locked. We left our key in the door of our room and left through a side exit where overflowing bags of dirty laundry had been dumped.
