We arrived back in Picton on the evening of the 15th February, and chaos reigned, much of it caused by the disruptions due to Cyclone Gabriella. Earlier in the week, many of the Cook Straits' ferries had been cancelled with huge inconvenience to the commercial and tourism industries, and people had frantically searched around for accommodation in Picton, and the surrounding towns including Blenheim. We had booked for our one night in the Palmira, so we were fortunate. There was still some uncertainty about the ferries running when we woke, after a restless night, so after a brief breakfast in the communal dining room, we packed and hurriedly left for the port. Fortunately we arrived early to find that our ferry was sailing, and after a 2 hours wait, reversed onto the vessel and set off down the exquisite Picton Sound to the open seas beyond. I would certainly stay here again, as I don't think this review does it proper justice.. Robert and Glenda made splendid mine hosts, and we loved  the Lodge and its idiosyncrasies, including its wall mounted horses and zebras. Worth every penny.   

Weird and wonderful.

We made an unscheduled stop in Picton due to cancellation of the ferries and managed to find a room at Palmira Lodge for the four nights we were there. The room was very comfortable with bubbly and chocolates on arrival. There was a large communal kitchen and dining room and the hosts were friendly. Breakfast (cereals, toast, etc) was included in the price. There is a heated pool and spa. Only a few rooms, and no children, so a quiet and relaxing spot, near the marina.
However, the room was not serviced at all during the time we were there, and there was no top up of coffee/sugar, both of which I would expect for the price we paid. 

Comfortable room with coffee making facilities and communal kitchen

The room itself was fine, but free bubbly and chocolates don't make up for the cost of staying. we had stayed in Picton 2 weeks earlier at a place that was unfortunately (but not unexpectedly) unavailable for the dates we stayed at Palmira. It was substantially better (room / facilities / outlook / pool / breakfast etc) and only 2/3 of the cost of Palmira
Were there at Palmira for 2 nights due to ferry cancellations, so not a lot of choice for accommodation. The room wasn't serviced, no clean glasses / cups for the second day despite no room facilities for washing up. (we could take them to the kitchen dishwasher downstairs) but at the way overpriced cost we would have expected a serviced room. No coffee replacement either.

Better choices elsewhere

We had a room on the top floor overlooking the pool and views of the water and surrounding hills. There were 3 of us---Delightful setting, Bob and Glenda were excellent in providing us with everything we needed and more. Nice little extras in the room as in cold bubbles and choccies on arrival. Very easy to get along with and thoroughly enjoyed their company. They weren't all over us---just a great mixture of friendliness and enjoyment when we were there. Neat pool and spa---great brekky and the pub only a 5 minute walk away serving good food in Waikawa Marina. We stayed for 3 nights and would definitely stay again. Thanks Bob and Glenda.

Enjoyable

What a lovely place ! The greeting from Bob and Glenda was warm and genuine, so we were instantly made to feel at home. Our studio room on the ground floor was adjacent to the lounge and breakfast room (brekkie is included in the rate) and it was ideal for our overnight stay. Note that it doesn't have a TV, but who needs that anyway ?
The walls of the lounge area are adorned with pictures of zebras and suits the decor and overall setting of the lodge. Out the front are a spa and a swimming pool, both of which are cleaned on a weekly basis.
Palmira is a nice place and certainly worthy of a repeat visit one day.


Zebras for Africa

I could see her face change when I said my partner (female) was in the car. She then came into the room in the morning with her man friend and accused us of having other people in the room. Nothing of the sort. So disgusted. We were accosted at 7am accusing us of running some kind of brothel. Over two hours before our checkout and with no one in the room at all. Her and her husband were very interested about my gf and I. We know we are good looking but this is over the top. Small town NZ is still so close minded. Shame. Picton is a cute town.

Extremely homophobic

I have stayed for two nights at Palmira Lodge and can recommend it. Rooms and bathrooms are clean and with everything you need. Bed comfortable. Breakfast is good and there are facilities to cook for yourself if you want. BBQ hot tub and swimming pool outside. A car is needed if you want to easily get down to Picton but it is near Waikawa marine. Had a very nice meal at the Jolly Roger there as recommended by Bob. A very welcoming place.

Lovely stay in a friendly place

The Palmira Lodge is situated a little bit further out of town than we had hoped however it is only a 5min drive. The room we stayed in was small but clean, the bed soft. Unfortunately no aircon made the room stuffy on a humid day and little airflow through the room as it opened up to a common thoroughfare.
The breakfast supplies were basic - but a good start to the day especially being able to chat with others about their travels. Overall value for money is good and the hosts very amenable.

Clean and friendly 

Best value for money during our entire trip. Glenda and Bob are terrific hosts. Glenda’s flare for decor is evident and Bob’s work making the pool & spa area look enticing works a treat. The room was beautifully furnished, as was the living area. It was lovely to meet the friendly hosts but also some of the guests. The place is very clean and has so many extras such as pool towels, chocolates, very good breakfast supplies, free wifi, comfortable bedding, close to waterfront ( better than being in Picton) and a lovely ambiance. Would highly recommend = 5 stars !!

Absolutely fabulous 

Big thanks to our hosts Glenda and Bob for making us feel at home.  From the lovely room (with bubbly chilled in the fridge) to washing our clothes after hiking plus breakfast and way too many cakes and chocolates! Yes a bit out of town but well worth the stay and ambience.  Oh and the pool was super after a long day on the tracks!  thanks guys!
