We checked into Te Awa and stayed only one night then checked out in the morning instead of staying longer.
The bedroom was so dark a light had to be left on permanently. The bedroom was so small that access to the far side of the bed was difficult. It was shabby and needed a new refit.
To the manager’s credit it was clean
The manager grudgingly replaced a blown light bulb  telling us that it was working in the afternoon. He also said that nobody had complained about the dark bedroom in eight years.

Not a good experience

My daughter and I booked for two nights. The living area only provided metal kitchen chairs for seating. The toilet was not flushing  properly. We messaged the manager/owner? No response, and no response to phone calls. In the morning we were very loath to even use the toilet. We left  around 9.00am and there was still no one in reception. It is time for Booking.Com to decide whether a video of a toilet flushing could be actually in the unit we occupied!

Rang to enquire about a stay. Customer service was rude, won’t be staying there in the future if needed. Would rather somewhere else that treat possible stayers respectfully. Heavens heard good things anyway.

We stayed here for 5 nights with our 2 boys who are 6 and 8.  It has everything we need.  A bedroom with 2 big sized single beds and a queen sized bed in lounge.  Our room was serviced daily.  Friendly people at reception.  A good range of DVDs available at reception.   This place is close to town which was fantastic.  I highly recommend it.  Would definitely come back next time we visit.

This motel looks very run down and the balcony you have to walk on to get to your room and the office looks and feels like it really is of need of repairs. The steps were warped and really felt unsafe and the balcony was sloping to one side. There was a private spa which you could use but cost $5 per person per hour. Cheaper to go to the local pools.
The days we stayed there it was really hot and there was no air-cond in the room and everyone staying there had there front doors open to get breeze. Only booked there as we thought it was close to city centre which it was but really wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Te Awa Motel - a throw back to the past where all you get is a room

I can only recommend this place.  Really good value for money.  Outside might look a bit old,  but rooms have been renovated and are quite modern for a motel room.  No full cooking facilities,  as there is no stove top, but there is a one pit electrical cooker.  And there is a microwave.  Shower was the best I ever had in a motel.  The hotel is located 15 minute walk from the town centre, so we did not needed a car.   You can see the river from the hotel,  but not really river view.  Outside deck in front of the rooms is nice.   Maybe one thing is missing,  a second comfortable chair or a couch.  Staff was friendly and hard working.  Room was clean.  And a very good price.   Wifi was good an unlimited

My husband and I stayed here as a last minute choice as we were going to watch the speedway...Great service and an immaculate room... Free DVD’s if you are staying in and also a Spa pool..wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.

Spur of the moment stay over...

I booked a 2 night stay via booking com in January 2019 with a free 48 hour cancellation clause. The property billed me for the entire stay a week before arrival (they’re entitled to do this after the expiry of the free cancellation period0 AND I called them to find out the reason.
No reply. Called the mobile listed on their website. Left a voicemail. No reply. Sent an email. No reply. Repeat this over 2 days. Still no reply. I then called the i-Site information centre in Whanganui to see if they’d heard of any problems with the motel. They called and emailed. No reply.
At this point, I rebooked elsewhere to make sure that I had accommodation and cancelled via booking.com who confirmed automatically that there would no charge.
i-Site finally made contact with the motel who claimed that their phone was broken (which didn’t explain heir lack of response to voicemails or emails)
I emailed again, requiring them to refund the charge, also informing booking.com of the discrepancy. No reply.
I then provided the motel with documentary proof of the refundable booking and told them that I would take legal steps to recover the charge.
They replied.
It was a “non-refundable booking” (wrong), “there are always guests who chase for refund when the booking is non-refundable”, complained about “multiple contacts via phone which resulted in work phone malfunction” (what a joke) and which “have greatly affected our daily operation of business in this busy season as he is not the only guest we need to focus on.”
So there you have it.
It appears that the motel at some stage changed their cancellation policy, (ALL bookings are now non-refundable, with full payment for the entire stay upfront) and failed to inform their sales channel partners (booking.com) and/or changing the conditions of existing bookings.
The motel still hasn’t refunded the incorrect charge - booking.com did that - and I’ve yet to receive an apology.
Not that I expect one from people with this attitude.

Appalling customer service

We are a family of four and we stayed for one night only.  On arrival the outside doesn't scream amazing, but on entering the room we were so surprised and pleased.  The room was spotlessly clean and well set up.  It had a very relaxed feeling and we all had a fantastic sleep in very comfortable beds.  The owner was very friendly and efficient.  We enjoyed sitting out on the deck in the sun and although you are road side, it isn't particularly busy.  A very enjoyable stay.
