My family and I enjoyed our stay at Te Puni Village. We were quite pleased with the services and accommodations provided. Initially, we didn't place too much hope on it since it is one of the VUW's halls of residence (in other words, a student hostel). When we arrived, we were surprised with the facilities and hospitality rendered by the staff members. We even had free breakfast. Awesome! That sure was convenient. Since Te Puni Village is located close to my alma mater - Victoria University of Wellington, I grabbed the opportunity to visit it, and even dropped by to say hello to my professor - Dr Jonathan Newton. Much has changed ever since I graduated. Felt nostalgic when I took my time to revisit every single nook and corner of the university. Thanks Te Puni Village for making my stay worthwhile.

Not bad after all...

I booked this room through campus summer stays.  Although I was aware that this was a student accommodation, I was not prepared for the state of this building.  I have stayed in two other student accommodations previously, and neither was as bad as this one.  I also stayed somewhere else for my last week in Wellington, which was at a similar price, and which further made me realise how poorly Te Puni was run.  

Firstly, the welcome I got was sub-par; the young man who checked me in had very little knowledge of the building or the services a summer student could access (this was after I finally found the poorly directioned front desk - you can't access the building at all without a swipe card, which makes it difficult to get inside for anyone who hasn't checked in yet). The hallway to my room was completely pitch black when I arrived, making me think I had taken a wrong turn (I hadn't).  As a young woman, this was not very welcoming and I did not feel safe.

Other disappointing factors of this stay included being told an incorrect location of the laundry, the cleaning services lacking extremely (there were dead moths in the hallway outside my room for over a week, I had to ask for the bathrooms to be cleaned after the shower drains were blocked for over a week etc), and the shared kitchen facilities on my floor were shocking, with mouldy vegetables in the fridge for weeks, even after I notified staff of this. One staff member used rude words when talking to me about the state of the kitchen (the long-stay summer students seemed to get the blame for this - I used the kitchen no more than three times and suspected it was some of the short-stay visitors who had put the food in the kitchen and forgotten about it).  

The breakfast in the mornings was alright, althought the frequent occurence of birds eating out of the cereal containers was unhygenic and off-putting.  If you left your plate on a table for more than a few seconds, for example while grabbing a knife and fork, you would come back to see a sparrow eating some of your food. Another issue was that even though I was a long-stay student, and had pre-paid for all my meals, apparently I wasn't allowed the hot breakfast which was sometimes available, and got told off for taking some. The vegetarian dinners were shocking, and food was often recycled and the "lentin curry" would have yesterdays leftovers added to it.  

The room itself was large and clean, which is why I give 2 stars.

Disappointing long-stay accommodation

For short term accommodation, this is as good as it gets. No hassles. Clean & tidy rooms. 5-star views. Quiet. Functional bathroom facilities. And breakfast thrown in as well. Because of the time of year parking is not a hassle either.

No Frills

Its a okay type accommodation. one can go and stay there. It s cheap but some services need to be improved. It is on the top of the hill, if you dont have any plan to walk, better not to go here. Overall it is a okay place to stay.

Close to Victoria university of Wellington’s Kelburn campus, and basically ok but be warned. It’s a student hostel, and has its downside as a consequence. My experience of a casual stay even outside of term time - for a conference - was of being in a room amongst student residents who kept me awake shouting and bashing along the corridor. Maybe just youthful high spirits, but this was really late at night and I needed sleep. It was basically horrible and I wished I’d stayed in a regular hotel. To be fair, I have stayed in hostels before without so much noise, but often that was where a floor had been put aside for non student guests.

Convenient for university but wouldn’t return

I had a suite, so that at least I had my own bathroom.  The accommodation is pretty basic (no TV or hairdryer) but has a basic breakfast included.   This includes cereal, yoghurt, milk, fruit, toast and drinks.  The bed is not made up each day.  But the basics are all there and worked fine.

Excellent for the price

We like the student accomodation.  This is not a hotel, but the university dormitory provided all the benefits of student life: cafeteria, many cafes and a bookshop, art exhibits, occasional live music, research standard Internet, compact-efficient room with microwave, water kettle, and fridge. A reasonable price on the shared laundry facilities was a plus. Might only be available during the summer, but we would stay again. Price was best we found. There are nice views of Wellington so it is a bit of a walk to the museums.  Most map apps show the shortcuts down the steps to the city.

Top Notch Student Accomodation

It's uni accommodation so don't expect much. The food was adequate as was the roll but one tea bag each over 2 nights is a bit stingy. The main reason for the rating is the trouble had finding the place. Used the map from booking.com and it took us to gate 9 where I drove down then realising I was going nowhere had to back up down the narrow drive back to the entrance. A simple addition to their ad would be to state you are to go to gate 7. Not difficult. 

If you're just sleeping here then it's good value. Just me and my 11 year old son.

We knew that we were staying in student accommodation, so nothing took us by surprise.  Check-in was easy, everyone that we met on reception was friendly and helpful.  Our room was clean and spacious.  It lacked facilities for cooking, etc, but the fact that you got a free breakfast more tha  made up for this.  There are also laundry facilities which was a bonus!  The location is great, and Uber is really cheap for helping to cope with the hills!  We would definitely stay again.

Good student accomodation

- This was the grottiest, dirtiest accommodation I have ever stayed in. I won't go into all the details of what was smeared on walls and all the marks, dirt, stains and the smells. Suffice to say that the state of the room(s) does Victoria University no credit whatsoever. I won't be back. (If you check my other reviews, you'll find I am generally very positive. What I have said above is a frank and factually accurate reflection posted in the interests of either significant improvements being made or customers being saved the hassle).

+ The breakfast was good and the fact it was included was a bonus.
(However, it was off-putting to watch a kitchen staff member place a clearly mouldy piece of bread my wife had put to the side back in the bread box with the other slices of bread).
