Stayed here in between Xmas and new years. The pool was clean and a welcome asset during the hot weather. Our room was basic but clean and tidy, the only downside was no air-con but we had 2 x fans in our room. Shower pressure not great. Other guests were quiet overnight, but as the motel is close to the hospital be prepared for the rescue helicopter to take off early morning/late at night. Recommend a day trip to Waitangi/Paihia.

Basic but good value.

At 4pm, we went to book here on a business trip as there was no sign outside stating there was no vacancy. On entry we found an unattended reception counter displaying a no vacancy sign... Moved on up the road to spend our money else where. I know Covid has been tough on the industry, but would it be to much to ask to put up a sign outside? 

No Vancy Signs Still Matter! 

The hospital put my mother up in this motel for a post-surgery stay. To care for her I paid and stayed with my two young children in the next room over. The pool was green and closed, yet no discount on the room was given despite not providing the amenities advertised. The rooms were clean, but very VERY run down. The kitchen floor and carpet in my mothers room was soaked from the fridge leaking, causing a slipping hazard. Management did not provide her towels despite me specifically asking if there were towels in her room at check in, so we could not clean this up ourselves. Management did mop immediately once made aware of the leak, but did not repair the fridge and still did not provide my mother any towels. The dining table chairs were broken in my room. The blades on the fan they provide broke off 2mins after being turned on rendering it useless. The beds were OK but the rooms are uncomfortably hot! We later found the milk pottles in my mothers fridge had curdled due to the fridge issues. Management shrugged their shoulders and told us a previous tenant must have muddled with the thermostat. We mentioned room checks being their responsibility (when we arrived our rooms were not locked, so presume the rooms had not been checked over after the cleaners left) and this is when management became hostile... said they would refund us and we could go somewhere else if we were not happy! We were not happy but at 7:30pm, 5 hours away from home with a post surgery check the next day, on waitangi weekend - unfortunately - we had no choice but to continue on with our subpar stay. We truly weren't expecting 5 star, wear and tear could have been overlooked for the price IF management weren't so dismissive of their failures to provide the basics and safety to their customers.

Green pool, leaking fridge, curdled milk, no towels - hostile management

When we needed last minute accommodation at 11pm on a Friday due to a family member being in hospital, Han at the Motel Villa del Rio was more than happy to accommodate us and made our late check in a breeze. The room was very clean and spacious, making our stay most comfortable. We would absolutely stay here again.

Very accommodating

Cleanliness is all I look for in a motel and this motel has it. I'll be staying here evrytime I come to in whangarei.  It's also close to everything and quiet. Heaps of space, beds are mint, big kitchen.

I stayed at the motel there was a short ruggered moari lady there walking around looking angry texting on her phone I asked her to do my rubbish she threw a bad at me said u so it she was so rude then she stood there pulled at her phone began to tx her boss walked out he said I'm just going to do something she said under her breath oh F***k up I was disgusted . I met a lovely lady there with blond hair and she was so poilet and friendly but I'll never stay there again due to that moari lady my children where scared of her and she was so rude . Motel was clean but didn't enjoy my stay unfortunately.

Horrible lady

The good reviews don’t match our experience unfortunately. I don’t mind outdated (and it is), as long as it’s clean. Spacious and well laid out but comes with some big buts......there was no soap provided to wash your hands, crumbs in the fridge, bedroom window latch was held together with toilet paper, the bathroom window latch was broken and wouldn’t close so there were sandflies everywhere. The shower pressure was non existent. Hate to have to give such a poor review as this place has way more potential. As it is, it’s a no from me.

That's my apartment in the picture! No 2. Great place, plenty of room, like a little flat instead of a microscopic box with an ensuite in the corner. Excellent kitchen and facilities. Lovely pool and garden area. Was quiet and secure. Kind of quaint really, not this year's model but that's fine by me. Enjoyed my stay.

Secure, quiet, spacious and well appointed.

My sister's and I chose this motel for it's location to the hospital. Peter was very accommodating regarding nights stayed, as we were not sure how long we would need to be there. The motel is very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed.

Great location to Whangarei Hospital

We stayed at motel villa del rio in March 2019. It’s great value and a perfect spot if you need to be close to the Hosptial. The pool and spa are so nice. We really appreciated the friendly and helpful staff.
