A very artistic hotel with better accommodations than Oslo. It did not offer much in food selections. In fact had to go to the big hotel for food. Which was cool with me. It was a great hotel with its staff and the views. It was great with sea view and new furnishings.

Great newer hotel.

We booked a private sauna +  for 3 people. We arrived on time, the sauna was not hot enough (40^C), the floor was dirty and wet, and the towels&rubs that we reserved were not there. We asked the lady that hosted us to take care of this, and while she brought the towels&rubs (although one of them was wet), she dismissed our request regarding the hygiene and temperature of the sauna. Our request regarding the firepit was also ignored. The lady came at the end of the session, opened all doors and announced that we have only 3 minutes left and should get out. We asked for our 3 minutes to change cloths and left with an unpleasant feeling of disappointment. 

Unpleasant sauna experience

Wonderful stay at Balestrand Hotel. The owner was very accommodating and the fjord-facing rooms had stunning views. Despite most restaurants and stores being closed until mid-April, the town had a charming atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area and taking in the serene surroundings. Highly recommend as a 1 or 2-night stop for those relaxing in the area.

For those doing Norway in a Nutshell, I strongly recommend including a stop in Balestrand and taking the express ferry to Bergen. It's a beautiful journey and the perfect way to experience the stunning scenery of the fjords.

Stunning Views at Balestrand Hotel

Beautiful hotel, apart from the concrete 60s addition. However this enables more people to take advantage of the facilities. From David the Maitre'D to all levels of staff they couldn't be more  helpful.Always very clean.Food was tasty although a bit repetitive as we were half board. A la carte menu looked very good and lunch was excellent. We were lucky enough to be there during the only hot sunny week this summer which was a huge bonus!
All in all a brilliant week. Travelled with Newmarket holidays who organised everything, and all the trips so well. Steve our tour guide was the best I've ever experienced.

Excellent family run hotel

Our stay was unpleasant from the start: the clerk told us that we still needed to pay the hotel (we had already paid weeks earlier through booking.com).  She was unconvinced by an actual confirmation and receipt from Booking.com -- as well as a screenshot of our credit card statement that showed payment!! 

This was only resolved through a very long call and wait time with booking.com (what a way to spend hours of your holiday!).  Booking.com finally had to call the hotel to set them straight. 

Beyond that, the wifi is poor to non-existent.  I finally gave up and used expensive mobile data from my phone to get Internet.

There are much better hotels to stay at in Balestrand. Avoid this one.

Claimed we hadn't paid when we had; Wifi doesn't work;

BEWARE.   VERY disappointed that management chose not to refund us when my husband got COVID. We were told we could still come and “just wear a mask.”  We opted not to put others at risk, even for just one night. 

Reflects poorly on their choices during these difficult pandemic times, and the protection they offer their clients. 

We will definitely not choose to stay here on future trips.

VERY Dissapointed!!!

Perfect location and delightful, caring staff made this a wonderful base to explore the fjord and surrounding mountains. 
We arrived with disfunctional phones and a need to sort out a rental car situation.  Eileen made calls and arranged a solution for the rental car issue, all the time making us feel that she was glad to help, although it was above and beyond our expectation.
Fresh flowers inside and out added to the charm of the hotel. There is beautiful outside area where we enjoyed wine and the fjord view.
Definitely look forward to returning.

Balestrand Jewel

We had originally booked a room at a hotel in a different more centralized touristy area.  Unfortunately the owner of that place passed away, the hotel went into probate, and we had to scramble to get another room elsewhere.  We could not find what we wanted in that area and finally booked this hotel in Balestrand.  I remember being concerned about it being more difficult to get to and far away from the things we wanted to do.  It turned out to be our favorite hotel and our favorite location of our trip.  The room was clean, neat, quiet, well maintained, I have no complaints.  The staff was friendly and helpful.  The front rooms have fjord views.  The back rooms have a hillside view.  Our room was on the ground floor in the back, so we had a delightful little patio to sit on with flowers and a boulder that had water flowing over it  Breakfast was OK, no better or worse than most.  The parking for cars can be a little tricky.  Someone at the hotel seems to be a Japanese Maple tree aficionado, and the other landscaping was pretty as well.  The town center is a short walk away.  When we finally packed up to leave Balestrand, I had tears in my eyes because it was so beautiful and peaceful and I did not want to go.

Would definitely recommend and stay again.

Simply put, the only place we'll stay in Balestrand our favorite Norway lodging. Owners Unni Marie and Eric maintain their property meticulously and deliver 1st class guest service.  Friendly, helpful and kind, great owners;  wonderful suggestions for local activities, trails, etc.  Generous lounge with large windows over looking fyord.  Easy 3 minute walk to village centre but Eric meets you at the ferry dock to pick up your luggage and also delivers luggage to the dock on your departure day.  On our departure day, they also allowed us to store our luggage &  delivered to the dock for our 4:55 ferry to Bergen.

Some reviews noted that the room was small but it was quite adequate for us. I wondered if we would feel boxed in - no way. Plus, between our balcony and the spacious lounge area, we had options.... 

Full breakfast.  Reserve early to get a room with a fyord view; windows on the rear side have a mountain view.  We appreciated talented Eric's devotion to preserving vintage items, including the highly stunning vintage carved door on the 2nd floor landing. 

If you're traveling by ferry, make sure you are at the dock early. If Norled captain sees no one on the dock, they don't stop. Unni Marie and Eric gave us this tip and we were grateful.  We traveled in late May/early June, an ideal time to see Norway - favorable weather and less crowded.  Even then several village shops & cafes were open.

My favorite small hotel of all time

We couldn't get a water view room when we booked, but asked to be put on the waitlist if one came up. Lucky for us, we managed to get a water view room on arrival, due to a late cancellation. The view of Sognefjord is stunning from the hotel but even better from the room balcony, and worth the extra dollars if you can afford it!

Complimentary pick up and drop off at the main harbour was much appreciated. The breakfast was as expected. We were given some recommendations for dinner and where to walk, all in all, a very enjoyable overnight stay at this hotel, can highly recommend!
