Fabulous views, warm welcome, great value.  We loved this little hotel. We stayed for 3 nights and found Balestrand a great location for exploring the area. This family run establishment is located a short stroll from the fjord which removes you from the tour bus crowd, but close to the ferry dock and restaurants. Plenty to do in the area including hiking, gorgeous drives and general exploring. Ferry and bus service available for those not driving. The room was spotless, the location quiet. Plenty of hot water and good internet. Breakfast was very good and abundant and there are 2 kitchens available to guests, and best of all a guest laundry. Would not hesitate to return and stay longer.

Perfect for the independent traveler

Balestrand is about 1.5 hours by ferry from Flam, and we thought it would provide a nice break in our ferry journey to Bergen. It's a delightful little town, and Kringsja hotel is located in a beautiful spot.

It's a small hotel with a "family feel" and a super nice receptionist. It lacks some amenities (e.g. in-room safe and fridge) and the breakfast is not as lavish as in some other Norwegian hotels. But our room was spacious and had a large balcony with a wonderful view of the fjord and surrounding mountains. It also offers a guest kitchen and washer/dryer for the budget conscious guest.

A bonus is the collection of excellent nature photos that adorn the walls of the hotel!

Good value for money!

We so enjoyed our night at the Kringsja Hotel in the picturesque Balestrand. The pros, delightful reception guy who was warm and welcoming, building full of character with great views over the village and fjord, bed comfortable, enjoyable breakfast in a lovely room with spectacular views and free parking on site. Cons very small bathroom.

Delightful spot

For a hostel, this is very good. We had a family room of 2 bunk beds, and our own bathroom. Small but fine for 1 night. Our room had a balcony with a gorgeous view of the fjord which was a treat. Everything was spotless- our room and the common areas such as the kitchen, breakfast area and living room. Breakfast was a pleasant surprise in that there was more than enough and there was a wide variety of mostly cold food options. The staff is friendly and helpful and they graciously allowed us to use the common areas after we checked out. It’s been many years since I’ve stayed in a hostel so this was a relief!

Very clean with hospitable staff

This hotel is very much a bed and breakfast type of hotel, but it needs some updating for the price you pay. Of all my hotel stays in 3 weeks in Norway, this was I think the 2nd most expensive and far from the best. 

My biggest issue with my stay was the bathroom in my room. The shower was pretty much a shower head in the corner of the bathroom, right in front of the toilet, and a curtain that closed off a little square area. The shower floor is the same as the rest of the bathroom floor with no separation. So after your shower the bathroom floor is completely wet. The shower itself was also not pleasant since the curtain practically hugs the area around you. In the pictures it looks like not all the bathrooms are like this, so if this sounds awful to you, request a room that has a tub. 

Other than the bathroom the room was actually pretty spacious with a nice sitting area inside as well as sitting out on the private balcony with a lovely view out to the water. The room was comfortable, but for the price paid it really should have been more updated and modern. 

Breakfast was below average compared to all my other hotel stays in Norway...with the exception of the fresh waffles. 

The things I did really like about this hotel were that staff was extremely kind and helpful. The gentleman at the front desk gave me lots of suggestions of places to see during my trip. The hotel also has a laundry room so you can do laundry. Detergent and a place to hang clothes to dry are provided. There is also a kitchen, so if you want to store food or prepare any meals you can. 

I feel with some updating this hotel could be really nice, but sadly I would not pay the same rate I paid to stay here again as is.

small bathroom and overpriced for what you get

We stayed for a night here with a balcony room and it was awesome. It was the night before super blue blood moon and we saw the bright full moon right in front of the balcony! How lucky! 

The room was comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was awesome, not to mention the great bathtub that we need after a long hike to Burasi and Raudmelen easily accessed from the hotel. 

There wasn’t a lot to offer in breakfast but good enough to feed us up.

Two kitchens and a laundry room with one washing machine and a tumble dryer available on the first floor and costs 15 kroners for each use in each machine. It would be good if more machines could be offered as a family used the machines the whole day. We kept coming back again and again to catch our chance to wash the clothes.

Receptionists are helpful and beautiful, will definitely recommend and return in the future.



A pleasant stay

The Sognefjord area is quite full of tourists all summer, so we found that we would have to settle for the Kringsja hotel-cum-hostel for our overnight in Balestrand. On the plus side, marvelous pictures all over the place, all taken by the owner (retired, his son said). Also, a good balcony with a view to the fjord. The beds were OK, bathroom somewhat lacking in class, breakfast way under par. I think they cater to a younger crowd, but skimping on food is unnecessary.

Cross Between Hotel and Hostel

We came for the view little exciting our vacation will be ruined over guest fighting for eggs over breakfast. We when arrived for breakfast there were not enough eggs for everyone and  we noted to the staff. Yet, they key of bringing only a handful slowly, to the point that things at the restaurant with guest got very tense among guests. We had to wait standing 20 minutes forcing guests to hoard the two/three eggs that came out of kitchen every once in a while. My girlfriend was even very rudely yelled at by another guest in front of the entire restaurant. We asked the staff for more eggs but they kept instead just rearranging cups and other busy work. At peak hour with people hungry, it's on the restaurant for poorly running their breakfast. Totally ruined what was supposed to be a peaceful vacation.
