We weren’t residents of the hotel, we called only for lunch, so perhaps didn’t capture the potential magic of the place. It is quite unique, reachable only by train, bike or foot, & located directly on the platform, 1222 metres above sea level. Built in the early 1900’s as part of the Bergen Railway, it has a nostalgic, lost in time feel as you step off the train, one of just 4 services a day (& these are highly vulnerable to cancellation & long, long delays in  winter). The hotel has been recently renovated & the website shows glossy restaurant photos so it was a bit disappointing that in reality our lunch experience was comparable to a local authority cafeteria, the offer some serve-yourself-soup, wrapped sandwiches & the odd cake. Pleasant staff were on hand to serve drinks but there was no table service, indeed signs instructed you to return your own used plates, glasses etc to a stack-trolley. 
Whilst appreciative of the costs of servicing such a remote location, the meal was poor value. The views are terrific but there wasn’t a lot of atmosphere during our visit.

Disappointing Lunch Visit

It was great to return to this special hotel - the first time I have visited without snow, but equally beautiful!

The food was exceptional as were all the staff - all were really polite, friendly and really helpful. A big ‘Thankyou’ to all, but especially S(h)usma  and ‘Viking’. Looking forward to a longer stay in the coming winter!

A special place to stay!

We stayed here for two night's, which allowed us to truly enjoy the surrounding beauty and the peacefulness of this area. 
I was traveling with my adult daughter, who happens to be Vegan. I had made this known to the staff when booking our stay and we were thrilled by both the dinner and breakfast options they created for her, given their remote location. It was a perfect respite from our otherwise full schedule of traveling and I very much hope to return again for more hiking and relaxation!

Great stay with hospitality and service above expectations!
Due to extreme weather conditions the hiking options were limited but we got good advice and guidance and managed to explore the outdoors in a safe way. 
The train back home were cancelled but the personal provided options for alternative route back home. Very helpful to all guests!

Great hospitality and service

Britt Sissel & team did a great job. Best managed hotel on our Norway trip. High quality food both at breakfast and at dinner. Space to relax for hotel guests. Nice and contemporary interior preserving some of the place’s heritage. While the place is by nature not prepared for strollers (we knew beforehand) they tried to support as much as possible. Thanks for the great hospitality!

Great place to relax and enjoy nature

One night at this hotel, the location was fantastic and the walking in the area is spectacular. The hotel itself had pros and cons:
Pros - stunning location, the views from the bar and the rooms was stunning. Reception staff were helpful and very friendly. We booked an attic room and the panoramic view of the mountains and the lake was just stunning! 
Cons - attic rooms get very hot in the summer, there is no way to cool them down. When we arrived the blinds were open so it had heated up throughout the day which made it almost unbearable. We tried opening the windows but this let in tonnes of flies (Finse fly) . The maintenance man did his best to try to sort it out for us but there was little he could do and he was very apologetic. Some fans or air con for the summer would make a huge difference. The food choice in the evenings is very limited one starter and a choice of meat or fish for main course, not entirely sure what the meat was but there are no other options for food given the remote location. We were also a little unimpressed by the way the head waiter treated his staff, swearing loudly at them when they asked for his help 
Overall we would stay here again if passing through, but the hotel might be better set up for the winter season.

Might be better in the winter

From the moment I booked into The Finse 1222 to the moment I booked out of the Finse, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming.  Where do I start? I arrived on the train from Bergen, just after 3pm on Saturday 13th May, The lady on reception, sorry I can't remember your name, was very helpful and assisted me with my luggage to my room. I had booked a basic room, wishing, when I realised I'd be missing out on the fantastic view, that I had upgraded to a room with a full view, instead of a small chink of the lake and beyond.  After unpacking for my 2 night stay I went for a walk around the hotel, and saw the view I was missing. But the hotel has lounges to sit in and a veranda to watch the clouds drift by, so I didn't really miss out on enjoying the scenery. 
The bed was super comfy with great soft pillows. The shower was perfect too, with plenty of towels. There was a large chest to put my suitcase on and plenty of coat hangers too. 
I could control the heating from my room, so chose to turn it down as it was a rather warm room.
The meals were very good, I picked the 2 course option. The first night starter and main, second main and desert. When I booked in, I was asked if I had any allergies, and when my food order was taken I was again asked about food allergies, super careful. The breakfast choice was vast, including bacon and eggs, plus a good range of cold meat, cheeses, fruit (fresh and dried), nuts, seeds, cereals, a range of non dairy milk, selection of bread and more!  We could help ourselves to our packed lunch, bags and parchment paper in plentiful supply.
Also the icing on the cake, good real coffee available in the reception area all day and evening, included in the booking fee.
I should also mention the very helpful lady on reception on the 14th May who assisted me when I hired snow shoes to go out walking across the lake.
Would I come back here again, YES!

Fantastic hotel, with great staff, great food, great location, PERFECT!

My first stay at Hotel Finse1222, and I hope one stay of many more!

The hotel and surrounding area is stunning, made only better by the excellent welcome and hospitality from Anne-Kari and her team.

Our top floor bedroom with views of the frozen lake and mountains is something I will always remember - and will be very hard to beat.

The food was incredible, especially given the challenging access to Finse. Every meal was tasty, creative and in plentiful supply. 

Thanks again to Anne-Kari and the exceptional team. We look forward to returning.

Hotel Finse1222 - a very special place

We had a wonderful stay at the 1222.  I was there with my Star Wars group and we got some epic pictures.  The rooms are very nice and clean and the beds are comfortable.   The meals are amazing!!! The Chef is 5 Star!!! The staff is beyond nice and helpful.   I am looking forward to my next stay at the 1222.  We also got beautiful pictures of the Northern Lights during our stay!

Amazing stay!! Wonderful food and staff.

I really enjoyed my five night stay at Finse at the end of February. Of course the location is simply stunning and it would be easy to spend all day looking out of the huge windows at the views and just relaxing, but this area is for skiing!

There are so many places to relax here - from the lobby to the 'polar library'; the food is excellent; but the staff really make the place, everyone one of whom was polite, friendly, helpful and professional (but a special mention must to go Viking, Emil, Frida and Aleksandra - thankyou!).

Come here to relax, ski or snow shoe. There are no shops and only a handful of trains each day, so just learn to slow down and enjoy this special place!
