We enjoyed stay because of service minded and helpful staff. Breakfast very well organised during Corona period. In middle of Gol. Rooms ok for a night or two. Nice and clean everywhere. Parking place available. 

We chose Gol off the map as a good place to break our journey between the western fjords and Oslo Airport and knew nothing more about it than that. The Solstad turned out be an absolutely charming place to stay - very welcoming, lovely cosy and comfortable room, a great breakfast and the couple running it couldn't have been kinder, even printing off our boarding passes for us at no charge. We ate dinner in the attached restaurant and thought the food was fine, plus the service was very sweet. We took a walk along the main street of Gol in the evening and were impressed by a small town that the inhabitants clearly respect.

This is a pleasant no frills hotel in an area that was very convenient to the stave churches we were there to visit. The service is simply stellar at the desk in person and in communications by email. I loved having beers that you can buy at the desk to enjoy in your room. The common areas and the place where breakfast is served are very comfortable. The onsite restaurant, run by another family, is GREAT. Good food at reasonable prices and excellent service. They are THE PLACE to eat in town. I will say that Gol, in general, is not a particularly pretty or friendly place - but we needed to be there for a few days and I think this is the best place to stay in the area.

Stayed overnight in transit from west to east of Norway.
Central hotel, not the latest style, but ok. Clean rooms and comfortable beds.
Good breakfast and great coffe. Night staff friendly and service minded.

Just stayed here one night during a roadtrip..

Price was reasonable.
Were met by a friendly receptionist, that's always nice. Room was clean and spacious. Bed comfortable, Wonderland bed.. Breakfast was good, but somewhat limited. In Norway we are used to having smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and some hot sausages or bacon at a hotel breakfast, none of that was present.. Still a good breakfast, just a bit limited.. Perfect place to stop if you need a good night's sleep before crossing the mountains...

A three to four hour drive from the airport in Oslo, this is where we spent our first night in Norway.  It is not a fancy place, but the rooms are clean, spacious, and comfortable.  Most have covered porches.  The breakfast was good.  Gol is a nice town, too.

Good central hotel for a stay in Gol

A Very Nice Place and A Good Value

A very nice, friendly woman checked us in. She even offered to have breakfast served earlier than the normal start time since we wanted an early start in the morning. Excellent customer service. 

Initial opinion of the room was positive-it seemed clean, nice shower. 

The bed was the worst we’ve found in Norway, the land of soft beds!  Others have complimented the bed but for older people it’s much too soft. My husband spends about 200 nights a year in hotels so when he says he can’t sleep on the bed, it’s bad! 

We ended up moving the top mattress to the floor for some support. Of course we had to rearrange some of the furniture to do so and there was a lot of dust and dirt clumps underneath. There was also an empty candy box. We only had two pillows for the two of us and I sleep with two pillows so I was happy to find an extra one in the sofa compartment ...until I saw the blood stain on it. 

Two bath towels were provided but one was wet on the corner when I went to use it and there was no bath mat. Also the area was noisy. There’s a neighborhood with typical neighborhood noise right behind the hotel and street noise out front. Fortunately, it didn’t last long or maybe I just stopped hearing it once I put in my ear plugs. The restaurant had a very limited menu for dinner-fish or lamb, neither of which I eat so we walked across he street to a pizza restaurant, which was excellent. However, the breakfast was good. 

The best part of this hotel other than the lovely woman who checked us in, was the price.

Felt like camping!

Never again, bad experience at the Solstad Gjestegård – 18 to 19 June 2023
We were 5 adults (Swiss, French, British, Norwegian) on a leisurely driving trip from Bergen (fabulous stay at the Scandic Ørnen Hotel in Bergen) to Oslo Gardermoen Airport. En route we booked 3 rooms via Booking.Com rooms at the Solstad Gjestegård, in Gol. This is after reading the very good reviews and enticed by the pictures posted by the hotel. We feel that we have to adjust the reviews so that others looking for recommenmdations are not mislead like we were. And do not be fooled by the pictures.

On Arrival
On arrival (at about 18:00 in the evening) we found an unattended reception. There was a notice to press a button for attention. On waiting 10 minutes we wondered into the dining section and the dining room staff told us to press the button at reception. We said we had done so.
5 minutes later the person who told us to press the button, appeared. We were handed 3 keys and we duly went to the 3 rooms. However, the rooms we found were 1 room made up for 3 people, 2 rooms made up for 1 person each (unmade beds were in the room). We thought this was a mistake and went back to reception. We needed 1 room for 1 person and 2 rooms each for 2 persons. After much discussion and a telephone conversation with the off-duty manageress it was demanded that we pay extra because the instructions from Booking.com was apparently for 3 rooms with 1 person in each. Clearly there may be a flaw in the communications between Booking.com and the service provider, especially when the details of each room stated that up to 3 people can stay in each room at that price! By the way the staff was not pleasant, and the manageress was dismissive over the phone. 
It seemed that we had made a mistake in our booking and that we had booked 3 rooms for only 3 people. Over Booking.com we paid NOK 4817.83 for the 3 rooms. We had to pay NOK 1700.00 extra at the reception for our mistake. The staff will then make up the beds in the 2 rooms to accommodate 2 persons each. By this time, it was about 19:00 in the evening and the kitchen at Solstad Gjestegård was shutting up and we could not get any food there.
On our return after our dinner which was at about 20:00 we went to our rooms directly as the entrance to the reception was locked and the staff had gone. On entering the rooms for double occupation, we found the duvets and the bed linen piled up on the unmade beds. The beds were unmade and it was expected that we were to make up the beds ourselves.  

Moved to Pers Hotel in the centre of town.
After our rude initial treatment, we were totally disappointed by this blatant disregard for service and decency; we did not wish our last night of the trip to be ruined by this unpleasant experience. We checked into the Pers Hotel in the centre of town. Here there was a staffed reception, bar that was serving, Shuffleboard and much more. 
And the service was tremendous; the rooms were much cleaner and in much better condition than Solstad Gjestegård. In our opinion the Solstad Gjestegård’s rooms we were allocated really needed a total upgrading. 
To cap it all, the Pers Hotel even though it is 2 classes or even 3 better than Solstad Gjestegård the price works out to be the same if not less. Pers Hotel is value for money given the location, excellent service and availability of the activities at the hotel.

On a final note, we did escalate the problem to Booking.com but we only received a standard policy statement.
