Warm and friendly place with soul, tradition and atmosphere. The staff was very sweet, the evening buffet was very tasty, and all in all this was a very good experience. I booked last minue because I needed somewhere to stay while driving trough the Strynefjell, and I was so pleasantly surprised by what awaited me. It feel incredible to relax here after a big hike previously that day.

Warm atmosphere, friendly staff

We spent one night in august. We booked one standard room and one comfort room. The comfort room has more space, with space for sitting, and nice view on mountains, so if you can, book a comfort room. The hotel is very charming, kind of chalet, beautifully decorated, many spacious places for meals but also a very large lounge and bar, and other sitting rooms. The food for breakfast and dinner was suite good, with many choices in the buffet. The location is a bit lost, but very close to Geiranger, and in fact very nice, on a great scenic road. The only inconvenient I must however point out to give an honnest and complete review is that in the room we could hear all what was happening next room, so the wall was thin. For that reason I am not sure we would stay longer than a one night stop. But overall for just a stop, it is a completely nice hotel we can recommend.

Excellent stop between Flam & Geiranger

We booked an overnight stay on our way from Oslo to Loen. The receptionist wasn't aware that we were coming even though we booked the room approx one month in advance.
We got a room and after struggeling our suitcase upstairs by a narrow staircase we could check into a room that was really air trapped. When we opened the windows the traffic sound was loud. And believe it or not, this is a hotel in the middle of nowhere. The wifi didn't work properly, but we weren't there for the internet connection 🤷‍♀️
We took a shower before dinner. Nice, but a cold and small bathroom.
The dinner was a set 3 course menu. The entre was some lettuce leaves with a couple of cured ham slices, the main was salmon with a no taste pea puré and cold potatoes complimented by a Hollandaise sauce that most likely was store bought. The dessert was some bits of fruits which they called a fruit salad. Gordon Ramsey, if you are reading this, this is a candidate for  Hotel Hell.

They had every opportunity to make it special, but couldn't bother the effort.
The bar and bartender were the highlights. But we took an early evening looking forward to the breakfast 😁
But no. They served cold cuts, cheese and spreads dumped out of their packages on to some plates. The bread was store bought. The Coffee was brewed Coffee standing on some heating plates and the omelette had a metallic taste with a spungy consistency.
We paid 1800 NOK for the room and breakfast.
And 1300 (450×2 for dinner) for the food with drinks.
Was it worth it? Absolutely not.
The only feeling we're left with is the regret that we didn't just drive the last hour down to Loen.

Terribly disappointing

Stopped by for dinner during our vacation passing through Grotlid. Althouth my wife and I were not hotel guests we were greated in the most friendly manner and given good trip advice… This resulted in us deciding to have dinner at the hotel… Great food and excellent service. All in all a wonderful experience. Thanks!!

Great food & Friendly service with a smile

This was the only place to have a meal in the area, and they offered a buffet lunch-dinner, because of covid, there was not much to choose from and it was served by them. The food was not good at all, nor the meatballs (medistekaker) or the cabbage, and the potatoes were very terrible, we only ate everything because we were very hungry and there's nothing else available in the area. Both my friend and I got extremely sick from the food after our meal. A terrible memory... it blurs the amazing memory of my favorite place from this summer: Gamle Strynfjellvegen.

Poor quality food

The hotel is good. We came back after a few years, as we liked the hotel and the food.
In these corona times they have had to offer ready-made portions both for breakfast and dinner.
The portions were small and not very impressive. I am sure they could have made more of it. Bit disappointing....


One night at Grotli

Fantastic arcitecture.......supernice , friendly staff. And cosy room.  That`s it.......
Could be ...cause of covid-19....... (i hope).  We expected far more when it comes to food......  1 choice of dinner....and a Very disapointed breakfast standard. For a Hotel like this we really expected much better. With this kind of foodservice the price is Far to high.  And no  ...TV, coffemaker ....

Beautiful but.......No.

Good food and a nice atmosphere I would really recommend this place for lunch, it is clean with efficient and friendly service the restaurant name is Fjellkro in Grotli next to the hotel and has a big parking 

Great lunch

Stopped for lunch with a group.  The food was lovely. The staff was charming.  The lodge was charming, very full of wood.  The scenery was amazing.  Other worldly.
So glad we got to visit.  Summer visit. Lovely!

Took me back to childhood

We stayed here for night in transit from Flam to Trondheim - Although the front desk and restaurant service was friendly and efficient, overall we were disappointed in our stay.

The old ski lodge is in a remote and peaceful location, offering ample parking, a cafe, bar and restaurant. As other reviewers point out, the rooms are old (but clean), with newly renovated bathrooms. The rooms were also missing some of the amenities that tend to be common in Europe - a TV, safe, kettle for tea/coffee, hair dryer, fridge. The walls are very thin, and you can hear every door open/shut in the hallway, and you can hear the voices in the adjoining rooms.

Breakfast was included in the room cost and sufficient - a variety of hot and cold options, although no basic scrambled eggs.

I would not stay here again.
