Staying here was one of the highlights of our 2.5 week trip through Norway! Lindis and her husband, Odugira, were amazing hosts, the rooms were spacious and well appointed, the views  from he hill overlooking Lake Hafslo were spectacular and the 'communal' gourmet dinners (extra charge) and breakfasts were divine. Lindis is an amazing cook, she announces and explains each course for both breakfast and dinner, and the wines they offered were spectacular. We met such interesting people seated around the large dining room table from Switzerland, France, NY and San Francisco over dinner. To top all of that, they rent e-bikes on the premises and we went on an 80 km ride along lake Hafslo, then along Veitestrond Lake for the most spectacular bike ride I have ever taken. 

Pleasing all your senses!

Aside from the excellent food and the setting, my husband and I ranked this as the B&B from hell.  Where do I start?
All of the regular rooms were filled, so we were assigned to one of their glass cabins. With the exception of the back facing the hills, the walls and ceiling were entirely of glass with NO shades. Including the bathroom! The path to the cabin was dangerously steep on an irregular narrow walkway with loose gravel. There were no drinking cups or waste basket in the cabin. Only 1 outlet to recharge all of our devices.  The images of the glass cabins on their website are TOTALLY misleading.
THEN there was the hostess/owner. She was superficially nice, but runs the enterprise with an iron fist. Speaking with the other guests when she was out of hearing range we learned that every other guest we spoke to was afraid of her, as were we. House “rules” for this B&B include that coffee and tea are only served with advance reservations and require a minimum of 12 people. Coffee and tea served just before her scheduled breakfast can only be consumed at the dining room table - beverages cannot be had anywhere except there. My husband was chastised because he emptied what was left of the water in his water bottle into the “clean” sink. Apparently there was a “dirty” sink somewhere for water bottle water.  Etc. etc. etc.  We left a day early. Need I say more???

Find somewhere else to stay!

Host offered a discount prior to my stay, but upon departure decided she did not want to honor it and used it as an opportunity to attack my character making me feel unsafe. Because the host decided to change her mind on a whim does not deserve a complete lack of customer service and make a guest feel the need to run to their car and lock the door. The property was not as shown in pictures as the property was under construction with the whirring of machines. The alpaca were kept in a pen and not by the unit as shows in photos. I know the reason was construction, but notifying a guest ahead of time would have been nice. It disrupts the peaceful stay to be surrounded by that. The internet did not work and the shower is ill designed. If you have luggage you need to carry it uphill on pea gravel through the dirt. Not friendly towards anyone with mobility issues.Host was offended I wanted to lock my doors as a solo traveler. If you want food it will be an expensive upcharge as the glass room does not come with any food/ coffee/ etc. MY bed had beetles on it during the night. The property is not easy to get to involving a lot of extra expense and there is little dining in the area if you choose to not buy the $75 dinner of "local ingredients". The towels were also like sandpaper. Overall, not worth the price you pay especially when the host attacks you for nothing. The view was beautiful, but so is most of Norway. I can recommend many other options for a fraction of the price.

Overpriced with staged photos

Utterly gorgeous. The best sleep I’ve had on our entire trip, in a duvet made with alpaca wool, grown right on site. Incredibly welcoming hosts. Make sure you order the evening meal - served at 7:30 in the shared dining room. The food was exceptional and matched with great wine. Days worth of things to do in the area. Stay at least 3 nights

Utterly gorgeous. With alpacas :)

We were a group of people in a workshop for two days. The nice environment, quiet, peaceful and wonderful view, delicious food and very friendly and welcoming host made it the perfect place to be.  The bed was very comfortable and the room was very nice, too. It is a farmhouse in which they have saved traditional furniture and esthetics in a lovely balance between traditions and comfortable modern beds and bathrooms. I also enjoyed the sweet and soft alpacas grazing quietly in the garden..  The place is a bit difficult to find in the darkness in November, but this is a lovely place I would absolutely recommend to others who like a peaceful environment for work or leisure, and well-prepared local food. I hope to return soon. 

Excellent for workshops

We traveled with our 4 adult children to Norway this summer and really Enjoyed our stay at Bestebakken! The main house is a charming historic home/bed and breakfast with very comfortable rooms, and there is an additional new building where my husband and I stayed with a king bed and big whirlpool bathtub. The owner, Lindis, is a terrific host and amazing chef. The food was absolutely delicious and mostly made from ingredients on their farm, the view is breathtaking, and the atmosphere calm and relaxing. We particularly enjoyed our ebike adventure (which Lindis arranged for us) with our guide Johnny where we visited the Stave Church and a traditional wooden boat building company!

Gorgeous scenery and terrific host!

Bestebakken is more of a guest house than a hotel. We stayed in the adjacent barn building. The room – like the owner – was creative, eclectic and a little different, in a very good way. We had an incredible view of the scenery outside the property. We explored: the greenhouse, the alpaca pens, the converted storage container/guest units, the unusual corners within the house. Our host is very welcoming; and a very good chef. The “connecting” breakfasts and the dinners were prepared with care, attention to detail and culinary skill. We enjoyed our fellow guests and had positive experiences meeting and getting to know our fellow travelers. I appreciated the care and attention that our host gave to our dietary differences (no pork/ham/shellfish) and was grateful for her concern and small substitutions. Our trip during the day was uniquely special: with friends that we’d met at the Bestebakken table to a glacier within the nearby national park. 2+ hours of hiking each way yielded an encounter with an impressive glacier, and the walk back, over varying and irregular terrain, with glacial streams all around us, is one that I will never forget. Thank you to our fine host at Bestebakken for an enjoyable visit. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a person-to-person, top qualify, shared dining experience in Norway.

Bestebakken: A Welcoming Place with Imaginative Design and Great Food

Highlight of my Norwegian vacation! Beautiful setting, fabulous food, attention to
even the smallest of details. The hosts go above and beyond to make your stay special. 
Lindis and her husband are from Hafslo and have a rich connection to the community. They were able to set up a  wonderful visit to the local stave church as well as other interesting interactions with locals. 
If you have the chance to go, take it !

Heavenly location

We spent a night with our kids (8 and 10) returning back home from Bergen and we were not disappointed. Everything was perfect. The room, the atmosphere, the food and the service - everything was beyond expectations. This is not a place where you typically bring young children, but our boys felt most welcome and loved the alpacas. We can highly recommend this retreat and truly admire Lindis for what she’s created. She’s the most dedicated hostess we have ever met! How she finds time for everything is still a mystery for us. So inspiring! A stay at Bestebakken a memory for life and we’d love to go back and spend more time in the beautiful surroundings.

Beautiful and clean room. Healthy and very nice food both for dinner and breakfast. Homemade and tasty. Personal service.  Very nice view. Peaceful and relaxing stay. Friendly alpacas. We will come back!
