I would definitely recommend Spanish by the sea hostel. I’ve stayed there a great deal of time in total, for pleasure and for taking the Spanish classes! 

It’s nothing fancy but the vibes are good and everything there is to expect of an hostel and a little more is provided. There is a big kitchen which is well equipped, the price is good, the rooms are fresh, everyone that works there are super nice, they have a ping-pong table and a lot of hammocks etc in the common room and well yeah the price is good💫 
The location according to me is really perfect, because it’s close to everything but it’s also a little bit away from all the clubs and noises - best of both worlds!

Don’t hesitate to book it, Bocas del Toro is an amazing place and Spanish by the Sea is definitely the best hostel in town.

I love this hostel!

I really love Spanish by the sea! It has amazing vibes, good rooms, great big kitchen and an amazing common area which is big, has a lot of hammocks, a ping pong table and lots of sofas. The breakfast is also included which is a big plus! The location is also great because it’s on the main island and close to everything such as taxi boats, the town and the park where you easily can take a bus up to the beaches further up on the island! We loved it so much so we were in total here in bocas and Spanish by the sea 3 times on the same trip and we already miss it! The staff is btw so great and helpful as well! Overall an amazing hostel and an amazing experience, can’t wait to come back one day soon!

Amazing hostel

Worst experiment for learning spanish. I would advice if you want to learn spanish, to go to a real spanish school, this one is the worst. No class room, very few teachers (they will put you in a group with people with different level of spanish). This one is a joke.

Horrible experiment

I took Spanish classes at Spanish by the Sea in Bocas after the school I was originally supposed to go to changed the class schedule last minute. This was all super last minute and I’m really thankful to Richelle for helping with finding me a spot. 
I took classes with Patricio and it was a very good experience. We focused both on grammar and speaking and he tied these two together easily. Would definitely recommend taking Spanish classes there.

Spanish classes in Bocas del Toro

I loved my time in Bocas! Been there for 3 weeks and it was really nice. Really liked both of my teachers (Frank and Ronnie) and the staff, Brian and Mollie, that made my time there even better. The lessons really helped me to improve my Spanish. Bocas is good for partying as well. The hostel offers kayaks for rent, a barbecue, yoga and other activities and have really good tips what to do around Bocas. 

On the other hand: the hostel wasn't super clean, I had cockroaches in my room for example. Biggest problem was that there were days with absolutely no water. Can be really unhygienic and annoying that you can't really have a shower. Even when there's water, the water pressure is very weak, so it takes ages to wash longer hair.

If the water problem wasn't there, I would recommend this place BIG time.

Lovely people, hostel could be a little bit better

Nice place and staff are lovely. However I would not recommend this place at all. We are here for 3 days and they have no running water for like 12 hours at a times. Speaking to other guests this is an ongoing issue and not a one off. When the water comes on it lasts minutes to 2 hours.
It is very unsafe and unhygienic as you cannot flush toilets, wash your hands, shower or prepare food adequately. This is totally inappropriate and inadequate for a hostel. We were told that there was limited running water on the island and everywhere is affected - this is a complete lie as there is normal running water in other hostels, Airbnb establishments and restaurants etc (they possibly have tanks or pay extra for water). The owner does not want to invest in basic necessities and really really needs to as very unhygienic and clearly unsafe. They should run a hostel without basic things such as running water. I really would not recommend.

My third time staying at Spanish by the sea hostel.
It is always so much fun here , the staff is great Felipe, Brian and Mollie Thank you for making my time here the best. Also met the owner this trip. She makes you fill like you are part of the family. To all the wonderful travelers  I met  and times we spent together is  why I keep coming back. Great Spanish school too.  I have got to know the family next door who  I love dearly .. Best vacation ever

Another amazing stay/time at Spanish by the sea hostel

I booked a course to improve my spanish. Frank was my teacher and he did a great job. He took his time to explain things and provided me with extra material to study on. Would definitely recommend to get your spanish course here! The hostel was also great. Nice atmosphere and a super cool manager! In his free time after work he showed me around the city and gave me tips on where to go to. Definitely coming back to this place!

Our room was nice and the people we interacted with were also.
The problem was that there was no running water for two days.
No shower. No flushing toilet. Conveniences we take for granted elsewhere.
The location was good but there are so many other options in Bocas that I would stay at a different place next time.
