We loved staying in Tambo Viejo, due to illness of my son we had to extend our stay in Arequipa, and we were just so lucky to be in Tambo Viejo. Julieta, the owner was the most helpful and understanding host one could wish for. We ended up celebrating Christmas there and it turned out to be both a great as well as a memorable experience!
Arriving at Arequipa we were caught by heavy traffic and entering Tambo Viejo with its beautiful and tranquil garden is like stepping into an oasis of quiet and calm, just what we needed. 
The room was large and clean, good beds, large towels. And the everything was cleaned daily.
From the hostel we found everything in the city within walking distance

The most hospitable place in all of Arequipa

We really enjoyed every aspect of Tambo Viejo: great value , clean rooms, excellent beds, a great garden to have a daily breakfast of ´pan de tres puntas´, a freshly squeezed orange juice and a strong cup of coffee. The attention by Julieta makes you feel at home right away. The city centre with the spectacular Plaza de Armas, beautifully set under  the watchful eyes of the Misti and Chachani volcanoes  is just a few minutes´walk from Tambo Viejo.The excursions  that the Tambo Viejo  travel agency offers, are convenient, well priced , and show the best of the Arequipa area.
We definitely recommend Tambo Viejo as an very good place to stay, and to meet fellow travellers.

A great Hostel in a great city

We booked Tambo Viejo Hostel and on the photos it looked nice. But the oposite was true! The City of Arequipa was really really great. But about our stay:
First when we arrived nobody opened the door after 10 minutes calling, knocking, ringing they opened the door.
Oké we had a room. But the whole hotel and room were dusty. When you toutch with your finger some magazines in the commun room, or some places in the room it was all very very dusty. 
We ordered a room included a breakfast. But organizing a breakfast was a hard job for the owner. Mostly when we came downstairs she started preparing. That wasn't bad. But than arrives the moment of bread. She needed to buy that. At that moment the owner disseappered for more than 20 minutes.... We were tired of waiting and bought our own bread, just on the corner, letterly 30 second by walking. So in 1 minute back.
Later we did a tour to the colca canyon. So we did not stay in our room for 2 days. When we arrived after to days the owner was 'cleaning' the room acctuely she cleaned long time ago and all her cleanig stuff was in the room and she was half a way. The daily conversation with indwelling family was more important than paying guests. And on top off all was it quit hard to pay. First off all we have a discoutcard of HOLA hostals. And the hostal is full of HOLA stickers but she didn't want to give discout. And after that we accept thia fact ande we wanted to pay by credit card. (The door and the reception full of Visa and Mastercard stickers) but this wasn't aswell possible. 
And for who still think this is a good hostal; the hostal is on a road full of trafic, 24 hour. A lot of noise. 

Do not go!!!

I got a major heatstroke in Cabanaconde and we moved back to Arequipa for recovery. The Lady who runs this place was very helpful. She made tea from fresh coca leaves and told my girlfriend what we needed from the apothecary. The rooms are nice and had lots of hot water. Breakfast was good, with fresh juice every morning.
The most important thing though, it was quiet! When de left after two days, i had recovered from the worst of the heatstroke. If i geht back to Arequipa, this will be the place to stay.

Vers nice, quiet and helpful!

First of all, it seems that only one or two pictures posted for this hotel is correct. The pictures of the garden and the picture of the hallway looking to the backyard are correct. The lady who runs the place is really helpful. Breakfasts are rarely served on time. But, when you get breakfast, they are filling. You get eggs, fruit smoothie, bread, and coffee/tea. There are a dog and cat running around. The hot water rarely worked. It is sort of a walk to the plaza which makes it not super convenient. But, it worked well for us. The garden has a nice swing to sit on. Rooms are quiet and bed was comfortable.
