Just spent the last four days at the lodge and had an excellent experience. 
Francisco and his team took care of everything. Transportation to and from the lodge was great. Three meals a day were perfect and the service staff were awesome. Beds, linens and pillows were very comfortable and contributed to excellent sleeps during our stay. Every day has a unique plan for adventures that are sure to stimulate even the most seasoned world

Amazing adventure in the Amazon rainforest and Jungle. Everyone every age will love this experience

We booked a night for a family of 5 based on the Lonely Planet review. It promised somewhere “Cocooned in its own tropical garden…with its own Thai restaurant”…

Well - the truth is that “cocooned” means isolated. I emailed Stefan (manager/proprietor?) explaining we would be arriving at 9pm (after a 9 hour drive with 3 kids) needing dinner. He replied “There are many restaurants here where you can eat in the evening.”

Incorrect. There is nothing accessible by foot close by. Nothing . No shops or restaurants within at least 15 minute walk. 

The premises appeared run down. It is accessed down a very rough 200m track adjacent to the airport access road. This is a 10 minute drive to the centre of town (where we subsequently found a much more suitable hotel (Cabana Quinta - decent rooms; well priced and 2 blocks for restaurants ). The German staff appeared totally unconcerned about misrepresenting the hotel facilities (restaurant in website listing their Thai menus and overall state of the establishment).

Avoid.

Misrepresented, isolated, unhelpful, run down - avoid

I’m writing this review at 3am, at hour SEVEN of blaring music from a nearby neighbor. Had I more careful read the reviews of this place, I’d have stayed elsewhere. If sleeping is something you’d like to do, avoid this place at all costs. 

Same for eating or enjoying Puerto Maldonado—there was only breakfast available during my stay, and this place is a 10 minute moto ride into town. The day I arrived,the grounds were practically empty; I was told that because there were so few guests, the restaurant and bar were closed. Not even a bottle of water to be found for purchase. Fortunately, I’d brought my own filter.

Cabins are fine: super basic but with fans and mosquito netting. Wifi is terrible and doesn’t work from cabins. 

What food was served for breakfast was disappointing: Nescafé instant coffee, boxed juiced, a cold, slimy fried egg. 

As others have noticed, customer service is sorely lacking. 

I’d planned to return in a few months with student groups, but will absolutely look elsewhere.

3am blaring music, far from everything but the airport

The Anaconda Lodge is a great place for a short stay in Puerto Maldonado. It’s conveniently located close to the airport but feels completely tucked away in the forest. The lodges are basic but have everything you need for a comfortable stay. We also loved breakfast – the pancakes and eggs were delicious!

Fabulous Jungle Experience Close To The Airport

We were greeted by two hairless dogs with excema yapping at us as we jangled the locked gate open and made our way up the drive. The dogs look like the hyenas out of the lion king, one them has a tongue always lolling out to the side. I hope their skin condition is not contagious. A woman emerges after them and shows us to a cabin with a floor full of empty beds and a single a double made up for us to sleep in. The bed stead’s and surfaces are dusty and the floor is dirty underfoot. I have emailed in advance to ask if we can have a vegetarian meal- I have read she is Thai abd look forward to some nice Thai food. There is none on the menu, and no veg options, everything meat or chicken and chips essentially, which I suppose is why she had not replied. We went into town for dinner, which made it somewhat pointless to stay near the airport and out tour company. It’s a ten minute motor taxi irse along a long dirty dusty road occasionally perfumed with the sickly smell of death. In the morning breakfast is fried eggs with egg pancakes, despite my having specified my husband doesn’t eat eggs: they do bring some cheese on request however and there are a couple of thin slices of avocado, served in a room which also contains the reception desk. A swaggering German man emerges from an inner room and wishes us good morning, probably the proprietor of the place with the two Thai ladies. The whole place feels uncomfortable, and I am almost glad to have to go to the airport to get cash to pay them as they don’t have a card machine or PayPal etc, even though it is a hot sweaty walk down an unappealing road. When I get back I feel I don’t even want to touch anything, just to get out of there soon as I can. Something is weird there.

Weird vibe

We had an absolutely magical experience at Anaconda Lodge: experiences I very much doubt we would have had at any other lodge; more on that later. But, I'll preface all those positives with an overview of what to expect, as I wasn't entirely sure given there aren't too many recent reviews. 

Firstly, Anaconda Lodge is very much a back to nature, basic, simple lodge. Don't expect toiletries in the bathrooms or brand new linens. That said, do expect hot showers, WiFi (!) and a pool (very cold, but my son loved it!). The website isn't up to date, but still gives you a good idea of some of the trips and other particulars. 

When we were there, Kik, daughter of the owners, was running the place on her own with 1 member of staff. Kik cooks whenever you want (from a Thai menu - she and her mum are Thai), organises your trips, makes great pisco sours and generally makes sure everything is ticking over. She is utterly fabulous! 

Location: despite being incredibly close to what has to be one of the cutest airports I've seen, you are absolutely in the jungle. And this is why our experience was particularly magical. I had vacillated about booking a lodge deeper into the Amazon Basin and whilst there would have been advantages I'm sure (busier clay licks for one), the Anaconda has resident, but still wild, monkeys. One of the red howlers (adorably named Pancake) was a rescue as a baby and she and 2 males are frequently around. Pancake will even sit on you - on her terms of course, but she utterly charmed us and we had plenty of cuddles with her. 

There are also a couple of sloths and having been on a wildlife trip in the jungle one day and told we were very lucky to see a sloth in the distance, we got back to the lodge to find a sloth chilling out within touching distance! And then there were the squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, etc. We met travellers who stayed deeper in the jungle and were thoroughly envious of our close encounters!

Finally, the environment lends itself to building a rapport with like-minded guests. We had some good conversation over good dinners and, well how many hoteliers have you ever had a hug from on departure!? Utterly marvellous.

A magical jungle experience 

it may be convenient if you have a flight early in the morning...
far from the center but near thoroughfares, so you hear traffic noise although it looks like you're in the jungle in your bamboo bungalow... it can be noisy  because of the music coming from bars around.  
having breakfast II saw the monkeys...
a bit overpriced,  because it's a bit run down and it's at the same time too far from the center if you're looking for restaurants and bars, and too near if you're looking for the forest.
the swimming pool didn't seem very clean.

Not far from the airport, arriving into the gate, it feels as though you were in the jungles. Me and my family were one of the only people staying as we decided to go just after Xmas. The lady taking care of the place is just delightful!

The place was clean, with room service daily to clean up after our muddy tracks we left everywhere! The pool is a great place to chill and cool off from the hot sun

The breakfast was nice, with a selection of fresh cut fruit and pancakes! I slept in the first morning and the lady insisted by mom take back some pancakes for me to eat - this kind of service and thoughtfulness was refreshing

The lady owned 3 monkeys and 3 dogs - there are also wild monkeys and birds that travel through the trees near the house and pool. It was surprising because we saw the same types of monkey's and other animals we had traveled to Lagos Sandoval to see (we joked we should've just stayed home and watched them there)

Overall: service is up and beyond, nice location

A one night stay before entering the jungle.

Location:
Puerto maldonado is a small town bordering the jungle. Anaconda lodge is a great starting point from where you can go a amazon trip. Other than that this town doesn't have a lot to offer and so I wouldn't recommend spending a lot of time here.

Accommodation:
Simple lodges bordering the jungle. Each of the rooms has mosquito nets which is a must when in this environment. A private room has its own bathroom which is clean and comes with two towels. The bathrooms didn't have handwash, which is a shame. From your room you can expect to see birds, spiders and lizards and at night we heard howler monkeys. Wifi is available in the rooms and common areas.

The common area for dining could do with some updating to make meals at the hostel a bit more comfortable.

Food:
Thai cuisine at dinner was nice. Breakfast in the morning was very simple and not plentiful.

Overall:

This is a simple hostel that is no frills. This is a decent budget accommodation for a single night before embarking on an amazonian trip.

Simple accomm in a small jungle town

This was one of the highlights of our trip to the Amazon.  The couple that own the lodge were extremely friendly, chatting with us after our dinners of homemade Thai food, showing us around the property at night to find tarantulas, introducing us to the many species of monkeys that live in the vicinity, and treating us to jungle fruits that grow on the property.  
The experience was made even better the company of the rescue monkeys that live on the premises, who took naps with us by the pool and followed us on our hikes around the miniature forest the owner has grown over the years.
Would love to make it back one day!  Thanks for the memories!
