The hostel is situated in Huanchaco which is about 20 drive from Trujillo. It seems a bit old when you arrive but the room was nice and spacious. The owner, Carlos speaks in English and he is happy to help with anything. I left my phone there and came to Lima,he even sent it to me here. Really nice guy. The area is nice,the hostel is right on the beach, about 5-10mins walk and you have bars and restaurants on the beach. Travel agencies if you need to book a trip.

A bit old hostel but nice owner

We stayed two nights here, glad to be in Huanchaco rather than Trujillo. The hostel is almost on the beach and has a great view from a terrace. We were there at a quiet time and the sound of the sea in the room lulled us to sleep.

The room was spacious, had storage space and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and had a decent shower. Only complaint was the pillows which were flimsy and thin.

The wi-fi is a little patchy in places but generally reliable.

The hotel has an old school, slightly faded flavour and is at the quiet end of the beach so a few 100m walk to the center. On the other hand there is a supermarket directly behind and the hostel has some essential supplies (beer) on sale. For the price, this place is incredible.

Carlos helped us organise a tour of Chan Chan and the Huacas del Sol and de la Luna and is generally very responsive. 

We would have stayed longer were it not for the fact we had a flight in Lima to catch.

Incredible Value!

My three year old son and I returned from Huanchaco yesterday.  I was delighted with my experience at Cocos Beach.  From my room I could hear the ocean.  I intentionally set out to have a peaceful beach vacation. Since it is February, we chose to stay Monday through Thursday and avoid the summer weekend beach crowds.  
Before arriving I had called to say that I needed transport from the airport.  The Hostel does not offer transport themselves, but they did pre-arrange a taxi for me.  He was waiting when we got off the plane. We arrived before check-in, but our room was ready.  It was right next to the balcony.  The view from the balcony is lovely once you look past the wall of cables.  The room was clean and reasonably comfortable.  My one complaint was that there was no fan in the room.  The summer days warmed the room too much to be comfortable for me without one.  We opened the window, which made the temperature comfortable, but it also let a mosquito into the room and my son and I are covered in bites, even after using OFF.
I have not done much hostel traveling and so was surprised when there was no toilet paper in the room.  However, since this appears to be standard procedure, the little snack carts by the pier sell toilet paper too.  We had brought our own soap already.
Carlos and Raquel run Cocos Beach.  Carlos speaks English, which was helpful to me.  Raquel was very nice too.  Carlos was as good as a concierge.  I wanted to spend some time in Trujillo looking at history and Carlos called around to cab drivers and found out not only who would take us, but how much.  THEN he stayed at work late waiting for my son and I to come back to our room so he could ask us which option we wanted.  He also arranged the taxi back to the airport for us.
Everyday Carlos asked us if we wanted our room cleaned.  Mostly I said no, but I wanted new towels or the trash taken out...they did whatever it was I asked for that day.
The location is fabulous.  It is near the end of the row of hostels and restraints.  So most of the crowd is further up the road and not an issue.  It is literally across the street from the beach!  This was especially useful with a three year old.  We could spend the morning playing on the beach, come back for a nap, and go back in the afternoon.
I am rambling, but the room was clean and mostly comfortable, the location was wonderful, the price was cheap, and the staff was amazing.

Fantastic Experience

Hostel is not in the centre of Huanchaco, it's more on the north so it's quite quite. You can hear the waves just 20 meters from hostel! It's really great to sit on the tarrace and enjoy the view. Also, there is only 500 meters to centre with surfing schools, restraurants, shops. Room was clean with bathroom and hot water, towel and soap. In the hostel you can buy water, baverages, beer, cigarettes.... You can exchange a book as well.
I really recomend Huanchaco for surfers, long beaches, big waves for pro and small for students.
The only thing i didn't like was that sometimes the smell was like fish.

Calm and quite

I know hostals are not always very clean, but this was very bad! I came here because I read good reviews, but I have no idea where they come from. I arrived there and I had to sign the log book. I saw that the last person before me stayed there four days before me. I asked and they told me I was indeed the only one. Afterwards I am not surprised. First of all, the bathroom was amazingly dirty. If they can't clean that in four days, then what about the beds? And who knows the person before me has the same room? I wanted to go to the room terrace, I didn't even dare to touch the lock of the door and it looked like no one has used it in years. Later that evening, I did got two roommates, who also decided to stay there because of the reviews. We found bugs in the bed and the kitchen contained eggshells, liquids and flies. Also the place behind the desk at the reception where you can leave your bags after check out and the public bathrooms are very dirty. This was by far the worst place I have ever stayed. Don't go here!
