My husband and I really enjoyed our stay here. When we arrived, Pedro (one of the owners) met us at the airport and it was a mere few minutes drive to this mini resort. 

Our one bedroom apartment was spacious and airy and built using the traditional Pico stones. It was perfect for 2 people, but could comfortably accommodate 4 people (the sofa in the living room converts to a bed). There are currently only 3 rooms available with plans to build 2 additional rooms. 

I was pleasantly surprised to find the kitchen stocked with several loaves of different types of bread, a jar of cookies, a platter of various cakes, a carton of milk, a large bottle of water, a wheel of cheese, homemade butter and a huge bowl of fresh fruit! Though these were not replenished during our 1 week stay, they did replenish the coffee (individual pods) and sugar. Pedro also indicated that food can also be delivered from the nearby Ancouradouro restaurant in Madalena, if necessary. 

There aren't any large chain hotels on this small island (you can leisurely drive around the island in about 3 hours), so this is probably the closest you can consider as a resort. There's a beautiful pool, sauna, mini golf course and a small common area with a pool table. The pictures on the website felt accurate in being a clean and contemporary design. Though the property is not close to the ocean, you do get a gorgeous view of Pico mountains and vineyards on property. 

Despite not being within walking distance to nearby restaurants and shops, I think the location is quite good in being so close to the airport (not more than 5 minutes drive away) and in between 2 of the 3 largest towns of Madalena (about 10 minutes away) and S. Roque (about 15 minutes away).   

Having said that, this is my second time visiting Pico and I would highly recommend renting a car no matter where you stay. The largest towns on this island is not very large at all and you would definitely miss a lot of interesting sightseeing dotted around the island if you only confine yourself to one area. 

I think what makes this place really stand out is the service. Though nobody was physically there on property to address immediate needs (there's a phone number to call though), Pedro was excellent in arranging anything you need from car rental to scuba diving excursion. His English isn't the best, but his genuine personality makes up for it and it was never too difficult to communicate with him. 

The only negative things I could point out about our stay (I try and be fair) would be the size of the bed. I am used to sleeping in a king sized bed and the double bed we had in our room felt a little tight. For those used to daily housekeeping, housekeeping only comes every 3 days. However, there were plenty of towels in the closet and I'm sure if you request, it would not be a problem.

Otherwise, I highly recommend staying here and I would return here again if I am in Pico

Mini Resort for Couples and Families

It's not a hotel, but an apartment. Cancela do Porco contains 3 apartments in Bandeiras.  Very traditional and simple construction, with a nice and functional interior.  The apartments share a swimming pool, and a small midget golf course (fun for children I suppose), and a beautiful garden (where every apartment also had a private section) looking at the impressing Pico mountain.
The very friendly owner collected us at the airport, and we followed him in our rental car (which you really need on this location) to the apartment.  Some bread, local cheese, fruits and other food were available in the apartment, and he also invited us for his restaurant Ancoradouro in Madalena, some 10 km away.  This restaurant serves great food, and has nice views over the sea passage to Faial island.  The owner also produces wine, whereby we really loved the Teraz D Lava, a well known white wine throughout the Azores. 
We sincerely enjoyed staying in Cancela do Porco.  If we return to Pico we like to return to this apartment.

More than excellent

We stayed for one week in the beautiful cancela. Great view on the mountain. Beautiful sunsets. We enjoyed the pool and the jacuzzi. The cancela's are fully equiped great shower, nice kitchen, airco (which is very comfortable), wifi in the common room, etc.
Pedro, the owner is most helpful and does everything to make your stay perfect. And we loved to eat in his restaurant: Ancoradouro. The best on the island!

We just returned from a fantastisch holiday!

Great place to stay and enjoy Pico

I was not supposed to stay in Cancela do Porco during my visit to Pico but had to because there were no rooms available in the place that was my first choice (Pocinho Bay), and the options in the island are not many. In the end, however, I am convinced that I didn’t miss anything with the change of plans. Cancela do Porco is not a hotel or a resort properly speaking but rather a small group of cottages that are rented to holiday makers. The cottages are newly built but mingle well with the landscape and the traditional architecture of the island. My cottage was large (1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 living room + kitchenette and an outdoor area), comfortable and quiet. It could easily sleep 3 or 4 persons. It had everything you need to cook (inclusive of an espresso machine). There is a swimming pool, an outdoor heated jacuzzi and a billiards room, besides the view to the Pico mountain. The prices are a bit steep but the Cancela do Porco cottages seem to offer most than many rooms in the other hotels or resorts in the island.  The owner, Pedro Saraiva, is very helpful and will do whatever possible to make your stay comfortable. You may want to try his restaurant (O Ancoradouro) in the nearby village, which seems to be the best in the area. I can recommend the fish and the fig cake!

I didn’t miss anything with the change of my plans

We stayed with children in one of the appartments for one week. Enjoyed the beautiful, peaceful surroundings, the magnificent views of Mount Pico, and the fantastic sunsets. The appartments are well equipped, there is free wi-fi in the common room, pool table and mini golf. The location is some distance from Madalena and other points of interest and a rental car is essential. The manager of the Cancela do Porco, Pedro Saraiva, is very friendly and helpful.
