The location in the heart of this wonderful hilltop village would be difficult to improve upon. We spent a night here during an end to end cycle tour, and were sorry we couldn’t stay longer. We had a friendly welcome, there is a peaceful ambience throughout the building and our room was comfortable and charming. Breakfast was wonderful, excellent food and friendly service. All in all, a lovely stay.

Wonderful location, wonderful place.

This is a beautiful old house and super clean. It was lovely  and quiet with big solid walls and felt like it was newly decorated because everything looked so fresh. Host was friendly and one of his staff spoke excellent English. Breakfast was lovely. Lots of lovely places to go and have a meal in the evening. Only stayed one night but would have liked to stay longer.

Great location in Monsanto

A beautiful old mansion converted into a hotel. Each room is lovingly furnished and modernized, access to a beautiful veranda in the second floor. Clean, spacious with all the necessary facilities. Good wholesome breakfast. Great wifi. Do call the owner directly and you might get a better price than through booking.com Highly recommended

Great place, great location

We stayed a single night while doing a circular bike tour between the historic cities of Portugal. Our hosts were very friendly and organised locked storage for our bikes overnight. The rooms were nice and clean, typical portuguese, with comfortable beds, and access to a roof terrace with a clothes line which came in handy to dry our kit. Breakfast was plentiful and filling in the morning, setting us up nicely for another day in the saddle. Very good value for money

Nice place to stay in the middle of historic Monsanto

We stayed for 1 night in mid October. It is a very quaint bed and breakfast right in the village of Monsanto. Because it was off season, there was no problem with parking and we just walked 100 meters up to the inn. The room was exceptionally quiet with very firm twin beds. The breakfast had ham, cheese, bread, homemade jams, fruit and coffee. It was enough to hold us until lunch. The hostess spoke no English but used a translate app that took some time, but it worked! And she was very sweet. Cash only. Such an interesting village to visit and I highly recommend staying overnight.

Casa Pires Mateus met and exceeded all my standards and expectations.  The room was airy, had deck access.
But the humanising part of my too short stay was the staff.  Welcoming, sincerely caring folks who also put on one of the best hotel breakfasts I've ever had with fresh fruit and fresh homemade bread.  Highly recommended!

A GREAT PLACE TO STAY WHILE EXPLORING AN AMAZING VILLAGE

We just loved this place - what a great little hotel in which to stay - right up there in the village - quality room - great roof terrace - open to all and with the most unique of views - lovely breakfast. The hosts were friendly and very helpful - especially with our parking - we could not have wished for more - and Monsanto - well, we have never seen anything like it - a 100% recommendation all-round.

Excellent Accommodation - Amazing Village

Nice, recently renovated building in the old village, with easy walking access to pretty much everywhere in the village and also up the hill to the chapels and castelo – not to be missed! The village is a fabulous place to explore as well, with lots of interesting paths and alley ways. The hostess was very warm and inviting, although she didn’t speak English. Our room was newly renovated but a bit on the small side with a single small window and an amazing view over the village. There was a TV but with no English language programming, however the Wifi connection was strong and fast. The breakfast was great, with a decent variety of hot and cold dishes – a great way to start the day. Our main complaint about Monsanto was that the restaurants are insufficient for the number of tourists staying in the town. On the night we were there, 2 of the 3 restaurants were closed, but no one bothered to let us know this beforehand. Thus, the single open restaurant was overbooked, and we (along with scores of others) had no dinner for the evening. We went by the little convenience store and managed to get some potato chips, ice cream, and soft drinks to tide us over until breakfast.

Overall we had a great stay at the guesthouse and recommend it to other travellers, however it would pay to look into the meal situation in the town as soon as you arrive and book something early.

Great base for your stay in Monsanto.

What a wonderful surprise. Stunning location, superbly finished rooms and amazing staff. What more can you ask for?

.... oh, and front two rooms with Queen sized beds have wonderful views across the valley!

We stayed in the 'Flor Do Giesta' room. Which had a Queen sized bed, and window overlooking the valley below. 

Our friends stayed in the 'Margaca' room, also with a Queen sized bed. They had a door leading on to the upstairs patio from which  you could view the valley. 

Both rooms were great!

The other two rooms on this level both had two three-quarters sized beds.

There was another room on the floor below, but I did not get a chance to look in to this room.

All rooms I looked at have en-suite bathrooms. Clean and good size. Water pressure in the shower in our bathroom was very good. Assume same for other rooms.

The staff were also excellent and willing to assist with any request.

Breakfast was continental with fresh bread, fruit, hams and cheese and a Madeira cake. With tea, coffee and orange juice.

A must stay venue if you are going to Monsanto, or looking for a central location to explore the region.
