We had a really fabulous stay and regretted deeply that we did not stay longer. The owners are very relaxed,  friendly and accommodating. The rooms are simple, well designed, and built into the boulders, as was the whole utterly unique and charming village of Monsanto. We really enjoyed the accommodation's terrace for breakfast (having sadly arrived too late for sunset drinks). The sister restaurant with its' lovely terrace overlooking the view was also very special. If yiu hsve the time, ideally stay two nights, as itbis such  ynique experience. The sunsets there are spectacular and the castle on top of the hill (a shortish walk) is lit up at night. Highly recommended!! 

Just go!!

Going to Monsanto is practically compulsory. The Lusitana Tavern is a must-see. Monsanto's finest ranch. Full satisfaction, both at boarding and breakfast. Thank you Helena and John for your sympathy.

Small but pleasant space. It was the second time I was there, and I still enjoyed this experience more than the first. Super tasty food. Good price/quality ratio. Fun entry with the displayed list. Fantastic and super friendly team. Repeating no doubt.

I can't say enough about this place, the accommodations, the food, the service!  Such an interesting place to visit.  The owners of Taverna we very nice and friendly.  The accommodations were clean and rooms were well equipped. The restaurant has the most fantastic view from Monsanto and food exceptional.  It is a must place to stay!

Wonderful

After ascending the mountain by car, parking and then dragging a rolling suitcase over steep cobblestone streets (don't do it if you can put your overnight items in a backpack!), you come upon the most beautiful village and then the tavern appears near the top of the small town (only 70 inhabitants). The tavern's patio with trees and only 5 tables looks out over the rest of the town and the valley below for as far as the eye can see - sundown is a special treat to enjoy with a drink and snack .   The tavern is a gathering place, but the residences are separate.  They have very modern features that are built around  the most unique feature of this town - nearly every wall has some protruding boulder that the dwelling has been built around. The hosts are a sweet and helpful couple, who in turn provide all the "services" as chefs, waiters, "turnover crew", and advisers!  While the dinner meal was nothing special, the breakfast was a feast! As the lodging is nearly at the end of the "town", you are very near the short hike to the medieval castle and amazing views of valleys on both sides.  Definitely try to fit this into your itinerary!

A once in a lifetime experience!

The owners are super friendly, very kind and attentive.We eat on the terrace, we hope at the bottom table that it is like a rock-cut cave, fresh and with beautiful views.

Excellent food and a beautiful place.

We were understandable with the delay due to the place being small and crowded. We even offered to pick up the drinks downstairs to help. After paying a €54 bill, I heard complaints from the attendants about leaving the establishment to buy two ice cream for children (ages 3 and 7) totaling €2.20.

Poor attendance

Everything in this place is made to let the client feel welcome. Quite small and quaint, the place has a very original and warm decor, fully in line with the Monsanto village feel, so it looks like the natural place to drink and eat when visiting the village. The food is surprisingly good for such a small house, where not even a real kitchen exists, and the dishes in the menu are simple but quite typical and traditional portuguese. Highly recommended if you go to Monsanto, which in itself also highly deserves a visit.

We love it, and we want to come back! Very cozy house, you have all the essential kitchen utensils for a few days, the TV has cable channels and WIFI. Breakfast is worthy of a king a genuine banquet, I highly recommend, very friendly and attentive staff, nothing negative to say was all 5*

Repeating 5*

We spent just a night here, but really enjoyed our stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were simple but recently renovated. Like the rest of the town, the inn itself is built around boulders, including one that took up a corner of our bathroom. It was hilarious! 

After taking a short walk around the town we ate a rustic meal in the dining room while a local shepherd sat silently in the corner scoping us out. We were lucky to run in to him the next day as we got lost looking for a chapel down in the valley. 

Monsanto was the highlight of our trip and we would not hesitate to stay here again.
