We were 2 families travelling for 6 nights in the Douro. We travel together once per year and always rent villas. We have travelled to Italy, France, Australia, Bali, and this is truly a magnificient villa. The villa is extremely clean, well stocked with a beautiful choice of wines and ports. 4 bedroom with private bathrooms. Extremely private. Beautiful firepit, large pool, and 100m from the Douro (165 steps to be exact). Views are incredible. We decided to eat at villa every night! There is a 12km hike that starts at the base of the house. We visited Porto that is 1hr10 minutes away and booked 2 port tastings. Please note that the villa is a 25 minutes drive to the closest town (food, wine etc) so if you are looking to going out every night for dinner, wine and action this might not be right for you. If living the ultimate Douro outside adventure with day trips and plenty of activities then look no further. Alexandra is just an awesome host as she organized kayaking on the Douro (which is a walk from the villa), wine tasting in a beautiful winery, the most magnificient restaurant in Panafiel….a must!! Do not hesitate, this is a Boutique Hotel experience. 5 stars! 

High end Villa with magnificient view

When travelling, like everyone else, we wish to have a peaceful stay, with no hassles with workmen on the property or beds with springs of mattresses jutting in your back, resulting in terrible nights as we booked this property for a week! We left 1 day earlier as we just couldn't take it anymore.

Casa do Rio is a beautiful property and our host Alexandra in many respects helpful. So it is most unfortunate that during our week there with family some of us found the mattresses on the beds most uncomfortable as the springs jutted in our backs. We only asked for a mattress topper. Our host's response when we informed her of this problem was that there was nothing that she could do about it.

Besides this what should have been a peaceful holiday in tranquil surroundings was disrupted by ongoing construction works as the owners are converting buildings, in the garden, just past the fire pit, into additional accommodation. It would stop for a short while following our reporting this issue but would soon resume. One time we even sent Alexandra a recording of the noise.

Eventually we cut our stay short returning to Porto a day early to spend our last night in 3 hotel rooms.  It is so sad that these so called "Superhosts" try or can get away with the gift of the gab when it suits them.

We even arranged for a private chef to come and prepare a lunch. We booked for 3 classic and 2 vegetarian menus and we all got served the same food. Alexandra the host was informed about this and we still paid 75 euro per person.

I am writing here so travellers can be informed of what to expect when or if they decide to stay at this house with a host and owner like Alexandra. Also no compensation was given and most times, it is not about the compensation, but what should have been a super special family time turned it into a very stressful holiday which is so unfair!

We enjoyed our stay at this wonderful home.  Enjoyed a relaxing swim in the pool, the views, and a great time with our family.  DON'T use GPS to find this location!!!!!!  USE the owner's instructions or otherwise have a really, really small car!  This home is well appointed, and a great retreat for a quiet vacation.

Great location, nice conditions and a helpfull and friendly staff.
Its a wonderfull place to visit with friends and family. 
The welcoming its a detail to remember and make us feel were at home.
The breakfast its good and have lots of options. The restaurant its a great choice to experience tasty portuguese food.

We rent the house for 1 week and everything was perfect ! very nice house, very nice configuration and decoration, fantastic view ! Above all, we had the opportunity to be very welcome by Alexandra and Arthur that were so pleased to  share their house with us ! Also, they have found lots of opportunities to find out maany differnts thing in this area witch was very helpfull !
