I highly recommend this old train station guest house in Marvão, Alentejo, Portugal. The charm of this beautifully restored station, combined with the warmth of the incredibly kind staff, makes for an unforgettable stay. Whether you're exploring the scenic trails, enjoying local cuisine, or simply relaxing in the serene countryside, there's something for everyone year-round. The attention to detail and the genuine hospitality make this a truly special place to stay.

To be repeated 

Don't go here if you are wanting a 5 Star luxury stay, that's not what this place is about. Staying here is an incredibly nostalgic step back into history.
The staff are very friendly and welcoming, it's great value and the place is very clean....but to get the most out of staying here you need to use and enjoy the communal areas.
Have a glass of wine or two on the platform on a sunny afternoon or relax during the evening in what was once the restaurant and soak up the ambience whilst listening to some jazz and imagine what stories this place could tell. We absolutely LOVED it and the people running it.....it proves there is more to a decent place to stay than a mini bar and a bathroom full of toiletries! A GREAT experience.

A Journey Into History

Train Spot is a unique & peaceful experience. Ten years ago, Eduarda and her brother bought the train station that had closed. They restored the common areas & updated the hotel rooms. It's located in a very small town in the incredibly beautiful & natural area in the eastern part of the Alentejo region. We stayed in one of two apartments with a small kitchen for 2 nights. This is an area for hiking, biking or touring Roman ruins or hilltop walled towns. Also, there's the unique opportunity to ride Rail Bikes--retrofitted carts that can be pedaled on the old railroad tracks. At the end of a month of travel in Portugal, it was great to relax in a small town & enjoy the countryside & starry nights.. We loved our stay! 

Unique, Peaceful  Hotel 

We stayed at Train Spot for 3 nights and had a wonderful experience.

The building, a reconverted train station, is lovely and charming, with a beautiful living room facing the now unused railroad.

The staff is friendly and always available to help. Eduardo and Elsa made our stay gorgeous, they are fantastic.

The setting is very rich, with old castles, ancient villages, Roman cities, great gastronomy and plenty of activities.

A great time, looking forward to return! 

Great service, fantastic place

It’s not the Ritz-Carlton but for 60Euros you get nostalgia, charm & simple hospitality. Great place for a little getaway or stopover in the region. The town was quite in winter but I assume would be bustling in winter. Would love to come again one day 

Basic & Charming

Friendly staff and owner.  The old train station has been converted into a guest house. Breakfast is at a communal table in the original kitchen.  The beautiful tiled pictures on the platform are wonderful. Situated in a quiet town. A lovely quiet walk around the village.

Amazing place

I fell in love with this place within 3 minutes. In a quiet village in the heart of the S. Mamede chain lies this old train station turned into a hotel. The owners made it comfortable and gave it a modern, creative  touch while respecting the building and its structure (check the amazing kitchen in stone where you'll have breakfast, or the stairs to the rooms). Rooms are plain but you won't be spending time there anyway, you'll want to spend time in the beautiful living room with its fireplace (it must be wonderful in Winter) and tons of interesting readings - you can tell that the owners love the region. And of course, there is the history of the place itself, where so many people met, arrived or left, and said goodbye at the time when there were still borders... Poetic and unique.

Poetic and unique

Fantastic - if slightly remote - hostel in the former train station of Beirã. Rooms are spacious and clean, but it's the brilliantly renovated common area that will convince the biggest snob: from the subtly renovated living room (including one rusty bicycle hanging from the ceiling) to the cool patio next to the abandoned railway.

Lovely renovated train station

Train Spot is a very cool and unique guesthouse that previously housed a train station. It is located around 2-3 hours from Lisbon close to the Spanish border. The whole house was very nice decorated in old school Portuguese style. The owner Eduardo was very helpful and present throughout our stay. Some rooms have private bathroom while others share. There is also an opportunity to rent your own small house/apartment. The rooms are very basic with bed, hangers and a chair. The breakfast was very nice and you had the ability to prepare some stuff yourself if you wanted to. There is internet anywhere in the house..

It is a great place to go with a big group of people!
