I spent in January one week in this guest house and I was almost very satisfied. The only thing a bit disturbing was the cold(ish) room, even thoug there was a heater with max power on.
But otherwise the room with good bed, toilet, kitchenette and large flat TV with a lot of channels to choose and especially the balcony was excellent.
Just below the balcony runs the Guaniana river and you have really nice views to the river and the banks on the other side were lambs walk and eat.
What a nice way to start your day by sitting on the balcony looking at the Eurasian crag martins flying around and especially sitting on the TV-antenna and window's cover walls, there could be around 50 birds on the same time.
Water in the room became hot in 5 seconds
The bed's matress was really good and gave a good sleep.
Be aware that there are steep narrow stairs to the room and no elevator.

Choose a room with balcony

This place is conveniently located near the old town. I don’t know what the main building is like, but we were in a separate annex, in December. There was a lovely view over the Guadiana river, but the room itself was cold, damp and rather shabby. The antiquated AC unit blew cold when we put it on to heat function. The (very rudimentary) kitchen and bathroom downstairs were even worse. The wifi didn't seem to work either. To be fair to the place, they gave us a full refund when we left after one night. It’s very cheap, so in summer it’s probably fine.

OK in warm season

Good location near all the landmarks and restaurants. Good rooms but not fancy. A kitchen for common use, and where you can store your items in the fridge/freezer. Friendly staff, that allowed us to arrive later without any problem.

Budget stay with good quality

Good availability, easy to reach, big and clean room (with walk-in closet) and friendly staff: perfectly suitable to hang out a couple of days longer than the one night we did to explore Mertola and its surroundings. And well priced too during high season.

Short stay at Mertola

We booked a double room with private bathroom through booking.com. No one at front desk at check-in time (doors locked) upon arrival, we had to call a number displayed on front door (only portugese speaking on the line) Then even though the check-in time was 14:00, we had to wait until 15:30 for our room to be ready. The AC barely worked (in fact we were only "allowed" to turn it on or off - it was not strong enough for the room, we had to open the windows, opening directly on the street...) Significant amount of tiny ants worth mentioning in the bathroom and kitchen + squeeky and hard bed. Bathroom run down. Good location if your not turned down by now... NB.: Everything is closed on Mondays in Mértola, even touristic stuff. Friendly cleaning personal.
